.SYNOPSIS...
Heavy lake effect snow will continue through this evening east and
southeast of the lakes, with a few snow showers and brief snow
squalls elsewhere. Lake effect snow will continue southeast of the
lakes tonight through Thursday and gradually weaken with time. High
pressure will then bring an end to lake effect snow Thursday night.
Temperatures will turn sharply colder tonight through Thursday
morning, then warm steadily to at or a little above normal by Sunday
with dry weather prevailing Friday through early next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The main arctic cold front is crossing Western and Central NY early
this afternoon, supporting a band of snow showers and snow squalls
along it that are partially fueled from lake effect bands that the
front captured and is spreading inland. Most of the heavier, frontal
snow squalls will move southeast of the area by mid afternoon.
A very sharp, deep, mid level trough will dive across northern NY
and New England tonight, delivering some of the coldest air so far
this early winter season. This will continue to support lake effect
snow, with migrating bands as winds steadily veer to the northwest
in the wake of the cold front. Lake induced equilibrium levels are
near their peak now at over 15K feet, then will steadily drop
tonight as the deepest cold air aloft moves away and inversion
heights lower.
Off Lake Erie...
Lake effect snow has been disorganized since mid morning as the
veering low level flow shortened the fetch across the lake and
disrupted the shore parallel band. A Lake Huron connection is
starting to become evident in radar and satellite imagery. This
should allow the Lake Erie band to strengthen again during the mid
to late afternoon. This Lake Huron enhanced band will likely focus
across northern Chautauqua and northern/central Cattaraugus County
at first, then begin to drift southwestward late this afternoon
through tonight. Expect this band to reach peak intensity this
evening as the Lake Huron connection reaches maturity. The heaviest
snowfall rates will continue to move their way southwestward across
Chautauqua County as boundary layer flow veers. By late tonight this
band should begin to weaken as inversion heights lower further, and
the Lake Huron connection begins to break down.
Expect additional accumulations of 4-8 inches from this afternoon
through tonight, depending on how strong the Lake Huron connection
ends up being. Some of these areas received 3-5 inches of lake
effect snow late last night and early this morning, so this will
bring totals into the 8-12 inch range in persistent bands, with a
few spots possibly exceeding 12 inches if the Lake Huron band stays
in one spot long enough.
During the day Thursday, what remains of the Lake Erie snow should
be quite weak as inversion heights continue to lower. A few snow
showers will linger through the morning across the western Southern
Tier. Boundary layer flow will back to southwest in the afternoon,
but the ridge axis will begin to build over the lake. This will
allow snow showers to move back over the lake and attempt to move
north through Erie County. Mesoscale guidance suggests this are of
snow showers will probably fall apart prior to reaching Buffalo as
the ridge builds directly overhead.
Off Lake Ontario...
Regional radars show a band of heavy snow arcing from southern
Oswego County to the Tug Hill. A circulation center is noted in
radar and satellite imagery entering Jefferson County. This will
result in a complex area of heavy snow moving across the eastern
Lake Ontario region through early afternoon as mesoscale ascent from
the circulation center interacts with lake effect processes. This
last burst of heavy snow may produce 3 inch per hour snowfall rates
briefly across much of the eastern Lake Ontario region. Following
this last burst of snow, boundary layer flow will quickly veer to
northwest in the wake of the arctic front. Until then, the Tug Hill
region may see another 4-7 inches through mid afternoon.
Once the northwest flow becomes established, multiple lake effect
snow bands will develop. along much of the south shore of the lake
from eastern Niagara/Orleans counties to Oswego County. There will
likely be one, somewhat dominant band embedded within this that is
forced by a developing upstream Georgian Bay connection. This
upstream connection will first develop late this afternoon across
Wayne/Cayuga counties, then move westward down the shoreline to
Orleans/Monroe counties by late this evening as boundary layer flow
continues to veer.
Expect additional accumulations of 3-5 inches tonight after 7PM,
including the Rochester area. There is a small chance of higher,
near warning criteria amounts if the Georgian Bay band were to stall
in one location for 3-4 hours. Based on latest high-res guidance,
this does not appear likely, but trends will continue to be
monitored.
Lake effect snow showers will continue Thursday southeast of Lake
Ontario, but in a weakened state. The most persistent snow will fall
from the Monroe County lakeshore and eastern suburbs of Rochester to
Wayne County, where a few more inches may accumulate.
Finally, between the main areas of lake effect snow there will
likely be meandering bands of Lake Huron lake effect snow with a few
brief, heavy snow showers this afternoon through this evening. This
will produce spotty 1-2 inch accumulations.
Strong cold air advection will send temperatures tumbling through
the teens this afternoon and evening. Lows will drop into the single
digits in most areas tonight away from the immediate lakeshores,
with single digits below zero east of Lake Ontario.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A 500mb shortwave ridge will track across the Great Lakes Thursday
night. There may be a few lake effect snow showers southeast of Lake
Ontario as northwest flow and -14C at 850mb continues in this
region. There will be a baroclinic zone stretched across Lake Erie
overnight. There may be enough lake induced instability to keep a
few snow showers around the eastern end of the Lake. All snow
showers should be done by Friday morning.
Beginning Friday, dry conditions are expected across Western and
North Central NY and will continue through the weekend. While a few
shortwave troughs track near the region, mainly north of the border,
moisture is hard to find and passing clouds are likely. Cold
temperatures will be the main story Thursday night and Friday night
as snowpack, light winds and clearing may allow good radiational
cooling these nights. Lows will fall into the single digits to low
teens, and minus single digits across the Tug Hill region Thursday
night. Similar temperatures are expected Friday night. Due to the
lack of wind, wind chills won't be much different than the actual
temperature. Highs will be below normal Friday and Saturday before a
warming trend begins Sunday.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
An upper level ridge will move over the Mississippi Valley Monday
and slowly track towards the east coast by Tuesday. The ridge will
extend north into the Northeast and mostly dry conditions are
expected. Above normal temperatures will move into the region as a
surface high persists across the Mid-Atlantic region. While normal
temperatures for late December are in the mid 30s across the region.
High and low temperatures will average 5-10 deg F above normal
Monday-Wednesday.

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A secondary cold front will continue pressing southeastward across
the area this afternoon. This boundary will continue to support a
narrow...broken band of moderate to heavy snow showers or snow
squalls as it passes...with the worst of these producing brief
reductions to LIFR. Outside of these and any areas of disorganized
lake effect snow east of the lakes...conditions will be mainly VFR.
Following the frontal passage...areas of moderate to heavy lake
effect snow and surrounding areas of snow showers will redevelop
southeast of the lakes later this afternoon and early this
evening...then should remain largely intact through the early
overnight hours before weakening late tonight. Expect mainly
LIFR/IFR conditions to prevail within the most persistent lake snows
and snow showers...which will affect both the KJHW and KROC
terminals. Outside of these...conditions will largely range from
MVFR to VFR.
On Thursday...lingering lighter lake effect snow showers southeast
of the lakes will continue to weaken and diminish in coverage while
slowly drifting back northward...with the Lake Erie activity mostly
falling apart by mid afternoon. Expect a mix of IFR/MVFR conditions
within the diminishing snow showers...with general VFR conditions
prevailing elsewhere.
Outlook...
Thursday night...Lingering areas of MVFR in diminishing lake effect
clouds and scattered snow showers downwind of the lakes...otherwise
VFR.
Friday through Monday...Mainly VFR.

Moderate to strong northwest winds will continue through the first
half of tonight in the wake of a strong cold front. This will
continue to produce high end Small Craft Advisory conditions on both
Lakes Erie and Ontario. Winds and waves will then steadily subside
later tonight through Thursday as high pressure builds into the
eastern Great Lakes.

Strong northwest winds will develop in the wake of a cold
front, with sustained winds peaking at around or just over 30
knots on Lake Ontario. This will bring the increased likelihood

...HEAVY SNOW OVER AND NEAR THE TUG HILL PLATEAU...
An area of heavy snow will move southeast over the Tug Hill Plateau
this afternoon with snow rates between 1 to 2 inches per hour.
Northwest winds will pick up behind this area of snow with some
gusts to 30 mph. This may create areas of blowing and drifting
snow. After the snow moves southeast, there will be some breaks in
snowfall with the most persistent lake effect snow showers remaining
southeast of Lake Ontario.

...LAKE EFFECT SNOW DEVELOPING SOUTHEAST OF LAKE ERIE...
Bands of lake effect snow are once again forming southeast of Lake
Erie. Expect highly variable conditions, especially if travelling
north or south through the region, with occasional bursts of snow
followed by just flurries from the Boston Hills to near or north of
I-86. Snow amounts in the more persistent snows may reach 2 inches
between 2 to 4 PM.

...LAKE EFFECT SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW THIS AFTERNOON...
A combination of lake effect and blowing snow is producing poor road
conditions from eastern Niagara County through much of Orleans
County this afternoon. Expect snow to move further southeast toward
the Thruway between 230 PM and 400 PM while also affecting some
towns west of the Metro Rochester region. Snow rates of 1 to 2
inches per hour will be common within the heaviest snow bands.
Blowing and drifting snow with winds gusting to 35-40 mph may also
cause brief whiteouts in open areas.
