.SYNOPSIS...
Areas of low clouds and drizzle will remain across the region
through the morning hours before much milder air expands northward
across the region. A deepening area of low pressure will pass by to
our west and north tonight, driving a cold front across the region
Friday morning with strong winds and another round of showers. Cold
air flowing across Lake Ontario Friday night and Saturday will bring
accumulating lake effect snow to areas east and southeast of the
Lake.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
For the remainder of tonight, behind the inverted surface trough
that swept across the region...lingering, deep low level moisture
will create abundant low clouds and fog. There is enough convergence
to bring some areas of freezing/plain drizzle through the remainder
of the night.

As a mid level ridge passes to our east...and a storm system over
the central plains becomes better organized during the day
Thursday...warm advection will increase over our region. This will
promote a notably milder day with temperatures across the western
counties once again climbing into the 50s. Mercury readings for the
North Country should top out in the mid to upper 40s. While the bulk
of Thursday will be precipitation free...the lift supplied by an
approaching warm front will generate rain showers later in the
afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Low pressure will strengthen as it tracks from eastern Michigan
toward James Bay Thursday night. A strong cold front associated with
this system will push across our region as well, bringing a line of
showers and possibly some thunderstorms. This is a fairly favorable
track to produce strong winds across our area, except for the latter
portion of the track when the low moves almost due north and further
away as its front moves through.

Thursday night will start off very warm, with southerly pre-frontal
winds supporting evening temperatures in the 50s in most
locations. This will change abruptly following the passage of a
strong cold front which will push into Western New York around
midnight. Expect an hour or two of strong winds immediately
behind this front, with post-frontal 925mb winds to 50 kts
behind the front. This has the potential to produce gusts to 60
mph across the lake plains, which is where a High Wind Watch was
issued. Although the strongest winds will likely be just behind
the front, it will continue to be windy all day Friday with
gusts in the vicinity of 50 mph across the lake plains, and 40
to 50 mph away from the lakes. Temperatures will fall during the
day, with highs in the morning followed by afternoon temperatures
in the 20s.

There will be a fairly solid line of showers with the front, with
limited instability and strong dynamics suggesting a potential for
embedded thunderstorms. 12Z QPF guidance has trended down a bit,
with some guidance keeping the heaviest rain with the front to our
south. If this holds, then most areas will only see around a quarter
inch with the front Thursday night. However, there still is a risk
of amounts greater than this, and if higher amounts occur this would
increase the risk for flooding. For more on this, see the hydrology
section.

After this, rapidly falling temperatures will eventually support
some lake effect snow. These will be better developed off Lake
Ontario since there is a considerably amount of ice on Lake Erie.
Lake effect snow will initially develop east of the lakes Friday and
then push southeast of the lakes Friday night as the winds shift to
the northwest. With strong winds, upsloping will enhance snows with
greatest amounts across higher terrain. High pressure will build
towards the region on Saturday, with drier air causing lake snows to
weaken during the day. While it is a bit early to pin down amounts,
moderate (advisory-type) accumulations appear most likely with 3-5
inches in any given 12-hour period.

Outside of lake effect it will be dry but cold Friday night and
Saturday. Lows on Saturday night will be in the teens and single
digits, with highs in the upper teens to lower 20s on Saturday.
Combined with winds this will result in apparent temperatures of
zero to 10 below Friday night.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Saturday night and Sunday surface-based ridging draped from the
Upper Great Lakes to the Upper Ohio Valley will gradually settle
southeastward and off the mid-Atlantic coastline. This will provide
our region with quiet and mainly dry weather over this initial 24-
hour portion of this period...with two possible exceptions. The
first of these will lie across areas southeast of Lake Ontario
Saturday night...where a lingering cold west-northwesterly flow and
shallow moisture could produce a few more widely scattered light
snow showers or flurries. The second will be across far southwestern
New York late Sunday afternoon...where an outside chance of some
light snow may arrive out ahead of an encroaching weak surface
trough and supporting right entrance region of an upper level jet
streak. Otherwise temperatures will continue to run a bit below
average...with lows in the 5 to 15 above range Saturday night
followed by highs in the mid 20s to lower 30s on Sunday.

Sunday night the aforementioned weak surface trough and passing
upper level jet streak will bring the opportunity for some light
snow to the entire area...with the greatest potential for this lying
across the Southern Tier...where available lift will be maximized
and PoPs have been consequently bumped up to the low likely range.
Following the passage of this system...Canadian high pressure will
then build across our region and bring a return to mainly dry
weather for Monday and Monday night. As for temperatures...lows
Sunday night should range from the teens across the North Country/
interior portions of the Southern Tier to the lower 20s south of
Lake Ontario. Highs on Monday will then climb into the mid 20s to
lower 30s...with lows Monday night then dipping back into the upper
single digits across the North Country and to the mid teens to lower
20s south of Lake Ontario.

As we move on into the final 36 hours of this period...another
system of southern stream origins then looks to bodily track
northeastward across the Great Lakes and Northeast during the
Tuesday to Wednesday time frame. Given the distant time frame and
with model guidance remaining all over the place on its strength...
track...and timing...for now have just continued to indicate some
broadbrush chance PoPs for a mix of rain and snow...along with
temperatures nudging back up to a little above normal.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
For the 06Z TAFS IFR and lower ceilings will continue through the
morning hours, with some patches of freezing drizzle and poor
visibilities.

A milder push of air midday, along with some veering to the winds
may allow for brief MVFR flight conditions.

Attention will then be on the last 6 hours of the TAF cycle, when a
strong LLJ rides across the region, bringing LLWS up to 45 knots
this evening. A strong cold front will pass by late tonight,
bringing a line of storms, possible thunder and an increase in
surface gusts.

Friday...IFR/MVFR windy with rain to snow.

Saturday..VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow showers.

Sunday...VFR.

.MARINE...
Low pressure passing to the south of the Lower Great Lakes will keep
a northeasterly flow in place through the overnight.

As a second storm system organizes over the central Plains on
Thursday...winds will veer to the east-southeast on Lakes Erie and
Ontario. These winds will continue to veer Thursday evening while
significantly freshening to small craft advisory levels. A strong
cold front will then plow across the region late Thursday night as
the aforementioned storm system rapidly deepens while pushing west
and north of the region to Quebec. This will establish gale force
winds across the region that will persist through at least Friday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Another system is expected to track to our west later today and
tonight, with another period of warmer temperatures and rain
expected. This system has the potential to produce more rainfall
from late this afternoon into tonight. This may cause
additional flooding in some areas due to rainfall and run- off,
depending on how much rainfall and how warm it gets. The
greatest risk is if this starts to move or build up behind ice
jams on the Buffalo area creeks. This is where a Flood Watch is
in place.

In addition to this, if rainfall amounts exceed the existing
forecast it is possible that rivers and creeks will approach
bankfull outside of ice jams. Forecast confidence is too low to
issue a Flood Watch at this point, but any northward shift of
the axis of heavier rain into our area would increase the risk
for flooding across western New York.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Users should be wary of unrepresentative gauge
readings with ice as hydro gauges are designed to measure for
ice free conditions. High levels seen on many of the Buffalo
Area Creek gauges are not representative of the true flow of
water. Ice buildup around the gauge can result in much higher
readings than are actually occuring on the river as a whole. For
these reasons, gauge readings due to ice jams are not counted
as records.
