.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will remain stalled out over the Upper Great Lakes
tonight and then will weaken as it moves across the Lower Great
Lakes on Tuesday. Rain showers over the area will gradually
transition to snow showers later tonight and Tuesday.
Accumulating lake snows can be expected east of both lakes
Tuesday night through New Years Day, with the most significant
snows expected to be on the Tug Hill.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Deep vertically stacked upper low over the Upper Great Lakes slowly
weakens as it lumbers across the Lower Great Lakes through Tuesday.
A 987mb surface low is over northern Michigan this evening. This
system will gradually move eastward tonight, and this will bring
in cooler air aloft. Lingering rain showers will gradually
mix with or change to snow as this happens. Any snow accumulation
will be minimal tonight. Temperatures are mainly in the upper
30s this evening, but they will fall into the lower 30s at most
locations by daybreak.

On Tuesday, with upper trough axis across the region and a moist
cooler cyclonic wsw flow developing, expect rain/snow showers to
become more widespread, especially in the afternoon as a shortwave
rotating through in the base of the upper trough moves through. Even
as H85 temps falling to around -9c by mid afternoon only yields
delta t/s around 13c which is marginal for lake effect, there is
sufficient deep moisture present to 10-15kft and larger scale lift
from the shortwave to result in lake enhanced precip. Inversion
heights rise to around 8kft downwind of Lake Erie and toward 10kft
late day downwind of Lake Ontario. Cold air aloft will eventually
make its way to the sfc with temps dropping to around freezing just
inland from Lake Erie and on the Tug Hill late day. Otherwise, temps
will be around 33-35F elsewhere in the afternoon. The increasing
lake enhancement and cooling sfc temps will be sufficient to change
ptype in most areas to snow by aftn with some an inch or two of snow
possible over the higher terrain inland from Lake Erie (southern
Erie county into Wyoming and Genesee counties) and over the Tug
Hill. Certainly possible that with the shortwave moving through some
of the snow showers, possibly with gusty winds (due to low-level jet
up to 45 kts around 3kft), could extend farther inland toward
Genesee valley mid to late aftn. Will be something to watch.

Westerly gradient winds will also increase as the cold air builds
with winds gusting over 30 mph by late day near Lake Erie. Don't
foresee much in way of blowing/drifting snow though as the snow
will initially be a wetter snow with SLRs around 10:1.

So, overall after the prolonged period with minimal snow, looks like
we will get back into a more wintry pattern, well at least for a
couple days.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Cold air will return to our region Tuesday night and Wednesday as
the base of an upper level trough swings across the region. The
closed low will be progressive, with a short-lived period of a
combination of lake effect snow and upslope snow across areas east
of the Lakes.

Tuesday evening will start with temperatures around freezing at the
surface...cooler over the higher terrain where accumulating snows
will be, while closer to the lakes and the lake plain there could
still be a mix of rain/snow.

Temperatures at 850 hPa will lower to around -10 to -12C Tuesday
night and Wednesday. As the cold air aloft builds towards Wednesday
morning, snow ratios will likely increase a fraction...with
precipitation becoming all snow across the region. The current lake
temperatures are around +3 to +4C, and still wide open such that
adequate lake instability will be found over both Lake Erie and Lake
Ontario.

Deeper moisture around the upper level low will graze Lake Erie
Tuesday night and early Wednesday...while Lake Ontario...closer to
the upper level low and deeper moisture will have slightly more
favorable moisture set-up for snow. While the upper level heights
and patterns are favorable for a larger lake effect snow event, the
moisture is not as favorable, and will be one element holding back
on large snow accumulations. The progressive upper level pattern
will also make this event's window a 24 hour timeframe...and
marginal surface temperatures in the upper 20s to around the
freezing mark will confine the higher snow totals east of both lakes
to the higher terrain.

All together, higher lake inversion heights of around 10K feet east
of Lake Ontario, coupled with the greater depth of moisture...and
flow along the longer fetch of the Lake could bring 24-hr snow
totals in excess of 9 inches on the Tug Hill...with slightly lower
amounts on the foot hills of the Adirondacks. We will issue a winter
storm watch for lake effect snow for Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis
counties starting 21Z Tuesday and going through 03Z Thursday...with
the greatest snowfall occuring Tuesday night through Wednesday
midday.

Off Lake Erie, the less favorable moisture environment, combined
with cross lake flow and some wind shear will hold overall snow
totals lower than Lake Ontario...that likely will range through the
advisory range. For now we will maintain a mention in the HWO of
possible advisory snows east of Lake Erie, with the greater totals
again across the Chautauqua Ridge, Boston Hills and southern Wyoming
Hills.

Wednesday evening a surface ridge will begin to extend north-
northeastward across our region, sending a weakening band of snow
back northward towards Buffalo. As drier air filters into this snow
band, any remaining light snow showers should end as it crosses the
Metro area. Like-wise on Thursday the diminishing lake effect snow
band east of Lake Ontario will lift northward and pass across the
Watertown area as either light snow showers or flurries.

An upper level ridge will build across our region Thursday, bringing
a dry day outside of any flurries that taper off east of Lake
ONtario. With the building ridge, 925 hPa temperatures will rise to
a few degrees above 0C...that combined with a southerly flow will
translate to surface temperatures in the lower to mid 40s across our
region. As this ridge axis slides to the east Thursday night,
moisture from a storm system to our southeast may bring the onset of
more synoptic rain and or snow showers.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A large upper level trough will be present across the Lower 48
through the weekend. Warm air advection will be occurring
across the eastern Great Lakes while a storm system takes shape
across the central Mississippi Valley Friday. Model guidance is
in agreement that a swath of rain will spread across the region
Friday while 850mb temperatures are around +5C. High
temperatures will be in the mid to upper 40s to low 50s.

Models are not shy with the intensity of an upper level jet overhead
Friday night however their surface low track solutions diverge
as it moves northeast Saturday. Depending on the track, either a
cold front will sweep across the eastern Great Lakes or
a surface low will move close if not overhead. Either way rain
or snow showers will be are possible. Cold air will arrive
Saturday night into Sunday as a shortwave trough tracks across
the Upper Great Lakes. Snow showers with lake enhancement are
likely Sunday with lingering lake effect into Monday. There are
signals that temperatures will be near normal Saturday night
through Monday.

.AVIATION /00Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Stacked low pressure across northern Michigan tonight will
gradually move east across the area through Tuesday. This will
maintain a moist flow, with some rain showers this evening. As
cooler air aloft moves in, any rain showers will change to snow
showers. Expect a mix of VFR/MVFR cigs, with the lower cigs
generally associated with showers.

Steadier precipitation will move in during the day Tuesday, with
thermal profiles generally cold enough to support snow.
Precipitation will be lake enhanced, mainly impacting TAF sites
E-NE of the lakes. Expect a period of IFR or lower conditions in
snow.

Outlook...
Tuesday night...IFR in lake enhanced snows east of the lakes.
Wednesday...VFR to locally IFR in snow showers east of the
lakes.
Thursday...VFR.
Friday and Saturday...Mainly MVFR. Rain showers.
