Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Buffalo NY 717 PM EST Sat Dec 28 2019 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure across the region will support continuing dry weather through tonight. Conditions will significantly deteriorate later Sunday into Monday as a large and complex storm system overspreads the Great Lakes. While this will result in widespread rain for the bulk of the forecast area, there could be a troublesome mix of rain and ice across the North Country. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... A ridge of high pressure extends across our region this evening, while a storm system takes shape across the central CONUS. Cloud cover will vary tonight as a ribbon of mid and high level moisture spreads ahead of the developing system and across our area. By daybreak Sunday skies will be mostly cloudy. Lows tonight range from the lower 20s east of Lake Ontario to the lower 30s elsewhere. On Sunday morning, though conditions will start out dry, divergence aloft due to jet streak over Quebec to New England along with warm air advection aloft ahead of deep sfc-H85 cyclone over the Upper Mississippi River valley will begin to spread rain over western NY. Possible that dry air from the sfc high over Quebec may hold off rain until midday, but eventually widespread rain is in store. Dry air will hold off precip until after sunset over the Lake Ontario region though. Even with warm air advection aloft, sfc warming will lag as the sfc high ridge holds just to the east of our forecast area. Expect temperature to struggle into the lower 40s over western NY while only reaching the mid 30s over the North Country. Rain may fall at a moderate clip midday into mid afternoon over western NY as nose of low-level jet and approaching broad jet ahead of shortwave trough in the plains help enhance the rain. Main focus for the low- level jet likely will stay just south of here though. Ptype will not be issue into mid afternoon Sunday as rain is expected where precip occurs. However as we get later into Sunday afternoon and especially into Sunday evening, ptype will become much bigger issue toward North Country and St. Lawrence river. By Sunday evening, slightly filling sfc low will be over the Upper Great Lakes, but H85 low looks more formidable with sharp warm front surging across the Lower Great Lakes. Will continue to see widespread precip with pva ahead of leading shortwave within large upper level trough and due to differential divergence from nose of H85 jet and divergence aloft due to approaching jet streak from the Tennessee and Ohio River Valleys. Pops were kept very high and ptype solidly remains rain over all but the North Country, no real changes to forecast there. However, there are model differences in terms of thermal fields, namely the GFS is much warmer aloft than the NAM, especially over North Country and toward St. Lawrence. Main impact in terms of sensible weather is more freezing rain/rain in the GFS idea (especially later Sunday night) and more sleet potential in NAM idea (again later Sunday night) as it shows colder air below the warm layer aloft. Canadian looks a bit more like the NAM. Overall, seems there is trend for slightly cooler temps aloft compared to what models were offering up a day ago. There is some concern that temperatures will be colder than model consensus across northern Jefferson County where there will be a northeast flow providing a reinforcing shot of cold air. Adjusted model temperatures accordingly, which increases the ice forecast a bit but also takes into account that there may be some sleet here as well. The other area of concern is portions of Lewis County where there will be more QPF Sunday night, but temperatures will be near or slightly above freezing. This should result in some icing, which may vary due to subtle differences in elevation. In general, expect ice accumulations up to a quarter inch. Based on the trends and latest guidance, think we are still looking winter weather advisory eventually being needed for the North Country. Yet, since most of the precip does not occur there until Sunday night and as models still differ on ptype (more sleet versus more freezing rain and rain), will opt to let later shifts issue the advisory if needed. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... The period begins with the stacked low continuing to slowly move across the upper Great Lakes and continue to spread a fair amount of precipitation across the the region for a good part of the day. While rain is expected across much of the region...there continues to remain the threat of mixed rain/snow across the north country. High temperatures will again well exceed the norm with temps across the western half of the CWA again hitting/exceeding the fifty degree mark while even across the north country temps will be around ten degrees above normal. Monday night and Tuesday the low shows some eastward movement across the central Great lakes while maintaining a cyclonic flow of colder air across our region. During Monday Night, rain/snow showers likely continue across the north country with scattered rain/snow showers over the rest of the CWa. With the system approaching Tuesday the rain/snow showers again become more numerous during the day Tuesday. Don't expect much in the way of any accumulation however... and then only minor amounts over the higher southern tier elevations later in the day. Lows Monday night fall into the low to mid 30s with highs Tuesday within a few of the forty degree mark. In the wake of Tuesday afternoon's secondary trough/cold frontal passage temperatures aloft become marginally cold enough for some lake effect snows east of Lakes Erie and Ontario late Tuesday and Tuesday Night. Lows Tuesday Night dropping into the mid to upper 20s will still be around ten degrees above the norm. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Lingering lake effect snows off Lakes Erie and Ontario will diminish throughout the day as a ridge building in from the west brings drier air to the region. The ridge then dominates our weather through Thursday. The next system approaches the region Thursday night with a mix of rain/snow showers which change to all rain as temperatures warm on Friday. Another weak ridge results in fair weather on Saturday. With respect to temperatures...these remain above normal through Saturday. Daytime highs climb into the upper 30s to mid 40s Thursday and will be within a few degrees of 40 for both Friday and Saturday. Overnight lows will be in the upper 20s to near 30 Wednesday night...within a few degrees of freezing Thursday Night and Friday Night. Normally temperatures would be near 32 for daytime highs and lows in the teens to near 20 across the lake plains. && .AVIATION /00Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... VFR flight conditions tonight as surface high pressure passes through the area with fair weather and only high clouds. Sunday, high pressure will exit to our east as a complex storm system overspreads the Great Lakes region. Look for VFR conditions to gradually give way to MVFR-IFR conditions from SW-NE over the course of the day. There will also be the potential for LLWS as a potent 45-50 Knot LLJ comes barreling into Western New York. Outlook... Sunday night...MVFR-IFR with rain at most area terminals.
