.SYNOPSIS...

Lingering clouds and snow showers early, turning dry and pleasant
into Sunday morning with high pressure. Offshore storm system for
Sunday night and Monday morning, bringing a period of snow, but
becoming a mix with rain along the South Coast. Colder than normal
air pours in for much of the coming week, but high pressure will
bring dry weather through Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...

10 pm update ...

Scattered snow shower activity concluding. Invigorated ascent
along the leading edge of a follow-up Pacific impulse shooting
through the Great Lakes region across the NE CONUS contributing
to scattered snow shower activity over down-east Maine. Some of
the latter fringes impacting N/NE MA including the Boston-metro
this hour with flurry activity. Flattening flow, entraining dry
air, prevailing subsidence hereafter, should see clouds break
towards morning as high pressure settles in.

Light winds overall, temperatures falling into the 20s, held
back by higher surface dewpoints that are in some part due to
snow melt earlier today. Main concern overnight will be
refreezing of water along roadways if left untreated.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...

Sunday ...

Fairly nice March morning with departing overnight short wave
yielding rising heights and anticyclonic flow across New England.
This subsidence should result in at least partial sunshine if not
mostly sunny conditions in the morning. Higher March sun angle and
light winds will provide pleasant conditions. However with mid/upper
flow very progressive warm advection clouds will quickly be on the
increase during the afternoon from west to east with low risk of
light snow entering CT by sunset. Highs Sunday mainly from the upper
30s to lower 40s across the region.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...

*** Moderate To Heavy Snowfall Sun Night – Early Mon ***

Model trend...
12Z guidance has continued the slight eastward shift, certainly
the NAM/GFS and available WRFs have. ECMWF and UKMET still
further W with the track of low pres deepening toward 970 mb by
Sun morning but is too slightly further E. Given the 50nm
disparity, feel a blend of of the wetter/warmer international
models with the colder US guidance will take into account the
current trends and allow for more time to see which becomes more
favorable. Otherwise mid-upper lvls remain some meridional
until the upstream wave begins a slow tilt. This is somewhat too
little too late and is why this is a progressive storm, with
the focus for precip mainly in the 12 hours from 03Z-15Z Mon.
QPF will be be a blend of the latest WRF runs which favor the
ECMWF somewhat, but will apply some deference to the drier
GFS/NAM.

Thermal profiles...
Temperatures above 950mb generally remain at or below -2C
throughout the duration except across extreme SE MA (warmer
ECMWF is slightly further W with the 0C isotherm) during peak
precip intensity. Also, as easterlies build onshore flow will
limit ratios due to near sfc warming above 0C, thanks to SSTs
still in 6-8C. Therefore, along the coastlines, particularly
BOS-S a gradual change to lower SLR SN, then mixing with RA
through the early morning hours. SN totals will reflect this.
Further N, a slightly stronger ageostrophic N component,
particularly across Middlesex/Essex should limit the sfc warming
and maintain higher SLRs. However, given there still remains
slight track uncertainty, these thermal profiles may shift
somewhat over the next 24 hours.

Dynamics...
Low pres makes its closest pass near or slightly poleward of
the 40/70 benchmark early Mon morning, deepening below 990mb as
it does so. Noting typical trowal/banding setup, wrapping toward
S New England. This yields as much as 10-15 microbars of lift
through the lower column and within the DGZ, which will help
with SN especially where it overlaps with the colder air
(central-NE MA). However, combined with the progressive nature,
noting the mid lvl heights do not fully cutoff until mid day
Mon, and offshore in the Gulf of Maine. This will limit mid lvl
deformation banding somewhat as the low-mid lvl remains open
longer than in storms linked to negative tilt trof, rotating
more NNE rather than progressively NE. This too is why this
storm will be unable to produce like others in the past slowed
and cutoff closer to S New England.

Snowfall/mixed precip...
Best mid lvl lift (mainly trowal based due to lacking mid lvl
convergence mentioned above) coincident with highest moisture
falls along a line from NE CT through central to NE MA. Highest
totals will be focused along this line, on the order of 6-10
inches. Have dropped amounts slightly across the W/NW portions
of the FA due mainly to lower moisture content. For portions of
SE MA and S RI, the 950-850 mb temps will ultimately determine
final totals, but expect a rapidly dropping gradient as warmer
air moves in both aloft and at the sfc thanks to mild SSTs. 2-5
inches is favored there, lowest close to the actual coastline.
During the day Mon-expect transition to mixed RA/SN then a mix
of SN/FZDZ as drier air cuts off the upper lvls before ending
everywhere by early afternoon. Overall a fairly quick event.

The current Watch still matches this update, and given the
differences between guidance even 24+ hours out, would prefer to
see how trends go over the next 12 before any
upgrades/adjustments, so will maintain the watch as it stands
for the time being.

Through mid week...
Dual CP shortwaves rotate E through the established longwave
trof across ON/QC, leading to a gradual neutral/negative tilt.
This shift to the E is likely to lead to another low pres wave,
but given the entire pattern has tilted, the current guidance
suggesting mainly an offshore passage on Wed is preferred, so
will continue this trend.

Late week/early weekend...
Shift toward meridional pattern late week will allow Pacific
waves to begin to move eastward. Will need to monitor these
waves as they move eastward and another inland parent-offshore
cyclogenesis transfer is possible, particularly by next weekend.
