into this afternoon with snow, ice, and rain. Arctic air
follows this system into early next week. Another weather system
may bring rain and snow next Wednesday.

*/ Highlights...

 - Significant Winter Storm continues into this afternoon

   England today

 - Flash Freeze Eastern MA/RI mid/late afternoon: Very
   Hazardous Travel

Our much anticipated winter storm arrived overnight bringing
several inches of snow across southern New England so far. The
low center currently sits over southwestern PA and is
continuing its trend toward an inside runner system. Given the
850 low so far west of us, the strong LLJ that brought us ample
forcing for snowfall earlier this morning is also advecting warm
mid level air north as expected. You can see this transition
line from snow to sleet/freezing rain distinctly on correlation
coefficient radar imagery. At the moment the melting line is
laid across the northern RI/CT border from west to east, moving
north. Already hearing reports of change to sleet and freezing
rain and these should continue to advance northward to the
northern MA border over the next few hours.

The freezing rain potential has been increased with this
morning's update. Hi-res guidance has performed marginally
well. The forecast is trending toward the HREF which has
verified the best. This keeps colder air in the CT River Valley
and into portions of interior MA most of the day, and many may
never switch from freezing rain to rain. In these locations ice
accumulations from 0.25-0.50" can't be ruled out. This means an
increased threat for power outages from a combination of the
snow already fallen with the ice and gusty winds. Because of
this cooling trend in the surface subfreezing air and increased
freezing rain threat, the Winter Storm Warning has been
expanded into Hartford and Tolland counties. This is mainly for
the northern portions of each county where ice on top of already
heavy snow is expected to pose the most risk.

As far as moisture goes, PWATs of over 1" combined with a LLJ
of 60-70 kts will be able to squeeze out QPFs of 2-3 inches over
southeast MA and RI. This will lead to an increased threat of
urban and poor drainage flooding, and a Flood Watch remains in
effect.

The LLJ mentioned previously will not only help increase precip
rates, but will bring gusty winds as well. Model soundings show
an inverted profile at the surface early in the day which would
limit gusts, but 35-45 mph gusts are possible. A Wind Advisory
remains in effect for the outer Cape and Nantucket.

The second biggest issue behind the snow/ice is the potential
for a flash freeze across Eastern MA and RI Sunday afternoon.
As the low passes over SNE and moves to the east winds will come
around from the N/NW and begin to funnel frigid arctic air into
the region. This comes right on the heels of temperatures in the
40s and near 50 over SE MA and coastal Rhode Island as it comes
into contact with a coastal front moving north mid-day Sunday.
This drastic drop in temperatures combined with wet roads left
over from today's rain will make for some very dangerous road
travel late today, overnight, and into Monday morning.
Additionally, as the system exits, this cold air wrapping around
may move in quickly enough to transition back from rain to a
brief period of freezing rain. All this to say, untreated roads
will be slick starting by mid-late afternoon/early evening.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM MONDAY/...

The storm exits into the Atlantic overnight leaving a drier and
much colder airmass in its wake. We will be wedged between the
strong low off the coast and a building high pressure over the
Great Lakes, strengthening the pressure gradient and bringing
gusty north winds Sunday evening and overnight. As mentioned
previously, this is some very strong CAA and we'll see
temperatures drop into the low single digits; interior portions
of MA and CT could even see lows below 0. Given the good CAA
we'll see wind gusts of 25-35 mph mix down overnight causing
wind chills to dip below 0. A Wind Chill Advisory has been
issued for central and eastern MA where we'll see wind chills
below -15 F, while a Wind Chill Warning was issued for the high
elevations of the Berkshires to see values below -25 F.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Tuesday through Thursday...

High pressure moves over New England Tuesday. Winds diminish with
the high, which will generate radiational cooling Tuesday morning.
The clear skies and light wind will allow min temps in the single
numbers and below zero.

Low pressure that moves onshore on the Pacific coast this weekend
splits into two parts. One moves across Canada and the northern USA
will move across the country next week, bringing rain or snow to
Southern New England Wednesday.  The second part of the system dives
southeast to the Gulf of Mexico by Wednesday, then moving up the
East Coast Thursday or Friday maintaining a chance of rain or snow.

England likely freezing with Arctic air building in.

SN ongoing likely to continuing into early morning by then will
see a brief flip to a wintry mix during the morning push before
quickly transitioning to rain. Have to watch LLWS closely for
roughly around the 10-19z Sunday period. Blustery NW winds
Sunday night, could see flash freeze conditions on area runways.

SN through roughly after midnight, then we'll see the transition
to sleet then to freezing rain. Freezing rain lingering through

An approaching deep low pressure will induce a strong easterly
low level jet.

By the time of high tide Sunday along the east coast (roughly
10 AM local), surge should be approaching 1-1.5 ft, which
combined with offshore wave action should lead to localized
minor E coastal flooding given a high astronomical base tide in
Boston around 11.6 ft MLLW. Given the high astro tide,
continued a Coastal Flood Advisory for eastern MA and the south
coast, Cape, and Islands.
