A significant winter storm will continue to impact the region
into this afternoon. Arctic air follows this system into early
next week. Another weather system may bring rain and snow
sometime next Wednesday into Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1120 AM update...
We upgraded wind advisory to high wind warning for Cape and
Islands. NAM has 80+ kt low level jet at 925 mb moving up across
this area around 18z. With temps in the 50s, this will enhance
mixing with potential for a brief period of damaging southerly
wind gusts.
Previous discussion...
Rapidly changing conditions this morning across SNE. Will
highlight issues below.
Temps and Flash Freeze...
Strong coastal front has pushed through NE MA down the I95
corridor from BOS into interior SE MA. Temps in the teens to
the west of the front with 30s to the east. Arctic air is
draining south from Maine and NH down the coastal plain in NE MA
with temps falling to lower teens in Essex county and into the
low/mid 20s from BOS southward along and west of I95. Meanwhile
warm front ahead of sfc low warm front has lifted north across
Cape Cod and Islands where temps have risen into the lower 50s.
Tremendous temp gradient across SNE.
The SE push of this coastal front will continue into SE MA with
temps rapidly falling below freezing, but it may slow as it
approaches the south coast as sfc low tracks east from LI
vicinity. Colder air here may be delayed until mid afternoon
when low pres passes and pressure falls shift to the south and
east. Very hazardous travel conditions in the coastal plain as
any standing water will rapidly freeze. In addition, freezing
rain will add to the problems.
Ice accretion...
Widespread precip continues to move across SNE. Lots of freezing
rain, especially near and south of the Pike and I95 corridor where
low level cold layer is more shallow. Deeper cold air to the
north with mostly sleet. The cold air will deepen through the
afternoon from north to south with mid level cooling lagging
the low level cooling a bit so precip should trend to more
sleet then snow before ending later afternoon. Main concern is
axis from northern CT and northern RI through central and NE MA
where 0.25 to 0.50" ice accretion expected and can't rule out
localized higher amounts. Some tree damage and power outages are
likely in the region.
Heavy rainfall...
Area of convection with sct t-storms and very heavy rainfall
lifting NE across RI and SE MA. Additional rainfall of 1-2
inches is likely which will cause areas of urban and poor
drainage flooding.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM MONDAY/...
The storm exits into the Atlantic overnight leaving a drier and
much colder airmass in its wake. We will be wedged between the
strong low off the coast and a building high pressure over the
Great Lakes, strengthening the pressure gradient and bringing
gusty north winds Sunday evening and overnight. As mentioned
previously, this is some very strong CAA and we'll see
temperatures drop into the low single digits; interior portions
of MA and CT could even see lows below 0. Given the good CAA
we'll see wind gusts of 25-35 mph mix down overnight causing
wind chills to dip below 0. A Wind Chill Advisory has been
issued for central and eastern MA where we'll see wind chills
below -15 F, while a Wind Chill Warning was issued for the high
elevations of the Berkshires to see values below -25 F.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Compared to today, this portion of the forecast is relatively
straight-forward. Strong cold pool and cutoff mid level low will
dominate our weather Monday into Tuesday. High pressure should
move across our region at the surface during this time. It will
be very cold during this time, with air temperature not much
above 15 degrees Fahrenheit, and minimum wind chill value well
below zero, especially across the higher terrain of central and
western MA. Mainly dry weather, except for the risk of some
ocean- effect snow showers across the eastern coastal waters,
outer Cape and Nantucket
A low pressure that moved onshore from the Pacific this weekend
splits into two parts. One part moves across Canada and the
northern USA next week, bringing rain or snow to Southern New
England Wednesday. The second part of the system dives southeast
to the Gulf of Mexico by Wednesday, then is anticipated to move
NE along the East Coast Thursday or Friday, maintaining a
chance of rain or snow. Temperatures rise to above normal levels
for much of the second half of next week.
Colder air is expected to arrive early next weekend.

An approaching deep low pressure will induce a strong easterly
low level jet.
By the time of high tide Sunday along the east coast (roughly
10 AM local), surge should be approaching 1-1.5 ft, which
combined with offshore wave action should lead to localized
minor E coastal flooding given a high astronomical base tide in
Boston around 11.6 ft MLLW. Given the high astro tide,
continued a Coastal Flood Advisory for eastern MA and the south
coast, Cape, and Islands.
