Another more significant storm Sunday into Monday. Very cold weather follows into next week with below average temperatures. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/... 10 pm update ... Increasing clouds out ahead of a stout mid-level wave progressing through the Ohio River Valley. Slightly faster than forecast models have resolved, it's a question of whether we'll see some flurry activity over SW areas of S New England towards daybreak, eroding up against drier air and lingering high pressure elsewhere across the region. Widespread lows in the teens with single digits over N/W MA. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/... Our area continues to be in between surface high pressure to our N, shifting to our NE, and low pressure to our S. The high pressure is expected to keep the majority of our area dry for the day. However could see some very light precip early Friday morning extend into northern CT/southern RI. Friday will bring considerable cloudiness to start, with a period of decreasing clouds across northern and central MA. Seasonable temps with highs in the 30s. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... Friday night into Saturday night... * Accumulating snow likely across SNE late Fri night/Sat * Heaviest snow expected across interior RI/SE MA but axis may change * Risk of some mixing with rain/sleet along immediate south coast and especially Cape/Islands Overview... Guidance continues to trend stronger with coastal storm tracking near the benchmark late Fri night into Sat with QPF increasing across SNE. There is decent agreement on a storm track near the benchmark with heaviest QPF across SE New Eng and Cape/Islands. GFS and ECMWF indicate mid level low closing off near or south of SE New Eng which allows heavier precip to linger into Sat, especially across eastern New Eng, while NAM maintains an open wave with precip tapering off during Sat. Latest guidance suggests column will be cold enough for snow across much of the region, but there is some warming around 850 mb as well as some marginal BL temps which flirt with the south coast. This increases uncertainty with snow forecast along SE New Eng coast. In addition, there is uncertainty with how far west heavier QPF will extend, especially toward the CT Valley. Overall, this appears to be a moderate snowfall for SNE, focused across eastern New Eng. Timing / Snowfall Amounts / Impacts... Expect Fri evening will be dry across SNE, then forcing for ascent and deeper moisture will spread north of developing coastal low with snow overspreading the south coast after midnight reaching northern MA toward daybreak on Sat. If GFS and ECMWF are correct with mid level low closing off to the south, there will be a period of heavy snow Sat morning lifting north across eastern New Eng as decent omega punches through the snow growth region. Snowfall rates could briefly reach 1-2" per hour, especially across interior RI/SE MA. There is uncertainty with how far west heavier snowfall will extend, but it appears snowfall amounts and intensity will taper off further to the north and west. We used a blend the ECMWF/GFS/NAM QPF amounts as a basis for our snowfall forecast. Preliminary forecast is 3-6" across RI/SE MA, 2- 4" from BDL-ORH-BOS as well as Cape/Islands due to mixing potential, and 1-3" NW MA. Given that we are expecting a wet snow, if snowfall amounts approach 6 inches the risk of power outages will increase. Fortunately, the wind does not appear to be a significant issue with this storm with NE gusts to 30 mph confined to the Cape/Islands on Sat. The axis of heaviest snowfall can certainly change and if storm track trends further north, more rain will be likely near the coast with the heavier snow axis shifting further inland. Also have to closely monitor thermal profile across Cape/Islands where up to an inch of QPF is possible. We don't think precip will be all snow here, but just a slight cooling of the column could bring significant snowfall to the Cape/Islands. Decided not to issue any watches due to snowfall forecast not greater than 6 inches as well as ptype issues where heavier QPF is forecast. Snow is expected to taper off Sat afternoon but snow showers may linger into Sat evening as shortwave moves through. Late Sunday into early Monday... * Significant storm likely late Sun/early Mon, but ptypes uncertain although the greatest risk for heavy snow is across the interior * Very cold weather follows later Mon through next Thu with well below normal temperatures While much of the daylight hours on Sunday will feature dry weather, a significant storm will likely impact the region late Sun into early Mon. There is considerable agreement amongst all the models/ensembles that an intensifying low pressure system will track up the New England coast. While this system is fairly progressive, given its rapid intensification it should produce a period of heavy precipitation. With that said, the exact track and precipitation types remain uncertain. We do not have blocking or a strong high pressure system over eastern Canada. So while a significant snowstorm is possible in the Boston to Providence corridor such as the GFS suggests, a classic track would be needed. So odds favor the greatest threat of heavy snow accumulations further back into interior southern New England with perhaps a snow to rain situation along the coastal plain. The one caveat would be if the late Fri night/Sat system ends up stronger than expected. This could push the area of strongest baroclinicity/storm track further east and result in more of a snow situation for the coastal plain. It is still too early to try go get very deterministic with this forecast and need to keep all options on the table. Later Monday through next Thursday... There is very good agreement amongst the GFS/EPS ensembles that anomalous upper level ridging develops across Alaska into northwest Canada. This will result in a deep trough over the northeast with very cold temperatures that are well below normal for early March. Highs probably will be held in the 20s even along the coast for a couple days.
