.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure to the north will maintain dry conditions today
but clouds will be increasing, especially in eastern New
England. A coastal storm will bring rain and strong coastal
winds late Sunday night into Monday, with some light icing in
the interior. The storm moves to the Maritimes Tuesday with high
pressure building south of New England Wednesday and Thursday.
A cold front may bring a round of showers sometime Thursday
night into Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Strato-cu developing along the coast early this morning as NE
flow brings in shallow low level moisture. The column remains
quite dry above 850 mb but cross sections show abundant moisture
below 850 mb developing across the region. This will lead to
lower clouds initially along the coast and SE New Eng expanding
across the rest of SNE, reaching CT valley this afternoon. Dry
weather expected today, although there is a low risk for some
drizzle or freezing drizzle late afternoon, mainly in the
Worcester hills from upslope with NE flow.

Coastal front has developed across SE MA with temps warming
well into the 30s along the coast and Cape/Islands, while 20s
just to the west. The coastal front will push inland and likely
set up west of the I-95 corridor today. West of the front, highs
will be in the 30s, with temps ranging through the 40s to the
east. Gusty NE winds 25-35 mph expected over the Cape/Islands,
with 20-25 mph gusts along the rest of the immediate coast,
but lighter winds interior.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Highlights...

* Light icing likely across parts of the interior later tonight
  and Mon morning

* NE wind gusts 35-45 mph across Cape/Islands late tonight/Mon,
  with a few gusts up to 50 mph over the Islands

* Minor Coastal Flooding possible along the eastern MA coast
  Mon afternoon

Overview...

Models in agreement on coastal low slowly approaching from the S
late tonight with track just SE of the Benchmark during Mon.
Global guidance has continued to slow the onset of precip with
rain not moving into eastern New Eng until late tonight or even
Mon morning. However, many of the hi-res guidance sources bring
light precip during the late evening, which initially may be in
the form of drizzle/freezing drizzle given ice crystal growth
region takes some time to saturate. Have leaned toward hi-res
guidance and HREF which indicates some drizzle in the evening
with steadier precip overspreading SNE from SE to NW late
tonight into Mon morning. This is not expected to be a heavy
rain producer with max rainfall 1 to 1.5 inches across eastern
MA with less precip further to the west.

1) Interior Light Icing Potential:

Given high pres to the north, northerly drainage wind will
result in temps falling back near and below freezing in the
interior, especially higher elevations where best chance of some
light icing. Location of the coastal front will be a key player
in determining how far east into the lower elevations freezing
drizzle/rain can get. Given track of low SE of the benchmark,
the front should set up near or just west of the I-95 corridor
with potential for some light icing as far east as the
Merrimack valley. Portions of the CT valley may also see some
light icing. Have issued a winter weather advisory from the
Berkshires to the Merrimack valley. Any icing will be light with
amounts a trace to one tenth of an inch. Temps will be warming
above freezing by midday Monday with any freezing precip
becoming all rain.

2) Strong Wind Potential Along The Coast:

NE low level jet has trended a bit weaker but still around 50
kt as it lifts north across coastal SNE late tonight through
Mon. This will result in gusts to 35-45 mph over the
Cape/Islands late tonight and Mon. Issued a wind advisory for
the Islands where confidence is highest in gusts reaching 50
mph. Fortunately, given most leaves are off the trees these wind
speeds should not cause too many issues other than a few downed
tree limbs and isolated power outages.

3) Minor Coastal Flooding Potential:

* Light rain continues eastern MA/RI Monday night - early Tuesday.

Details...

Monday Night - Tuesday:

990-ish mb low center will continue to progress northward through
the Gulf of Maine into/near the Bay of Fundy through overnight. As
it does so, it will continue to wrap moisture back
westward/southwestward through interior New England into
western/central MA and northern CT Monday night into at least the
Tuesday morning. ECMWF does linger this wrap-around moisture into
the afternoon, so there remains some level of uncertainty on how
long precip hangs on before drying out. Most guidance however
focuses the greatest moisture/QPF west of Interstate 495/95, and
especially along/west of I-91 into the Berkshires, Pioneer Valley
and northern Worcester hills.

As Monday night progresses, low-level flow transitions to WNW with
gradual/steady cold advection from W->E as the secondary "kicker"
trough comes up from the mid-Atlantic region. Stout NE winds across
eastern MA/RI and adjacent waters should then veer around to N/NW
into the overnight with lighter speeds/gusts. Net effect of the low-
level cold advection should be a transition over from a cold rain
across the interior (e.g. west of I-495, and especially Pioneer
Valley/Berks into Hartford/western Tolland Counties) to a brief
period of wintry precip overnight into the Tuesday AM commute
period. At the moment, thinking this would be a changeover from rain
to snow/pellets with colder air advection occurring aloft first
before surface temps start to cool. Should stay as rain into eastern
MA/RI where surface temps likely stay in the mid 30s to lower 40s
for the overnight into early Tuesday.

Even taking a colder ECMWF solution at face value, am still thinking
this would be a limited-impact to the Tuesday AM commute - any
additional/new snow being a slushy coating, to at most an inch in
the higher elevations in the Berkshires, a wet/low-SLR type snow and
unlikely to stick on roads/highways. After precipitation comes to an
end, partial clearing should push highs back into the 40s.

Tuesday Night - Wednesday Night:

Weak surface ridge noses into southern New England, though cyclonic
flow aloft and continued cool advection (850 mb temps falling
to -2 to -6C) is maintained through this period. In addition, a
mid-level trough progresses southeastward from the Great Lakes
into the waters south of Long Island Wednesday into Wednesday
night. Sfc cyclogenesis related to this feature looks to say far
enough away from New England at this point for only some light
precip, though it will enhance northwest winds especially over
the coastal/offshore waters.

All told, a dry but pretty unsettled period with mostly cloudy skies
supported by considerable extent of model low-level RH, though will
trend toward clearing Wednesday night.

Thursday - Thursday Night:

500 mb pattern changes to one of deep southwest flow aloft stemming
from a closed low over the Four Corners region. Expecting the
beginning of a warm-up of sorts (towards near/above normal temps)
starting Thursday with sfc ridge settling over New England. Should
see highs in the upper 40s to near 50 Thursday - with increasing
clouds Thursday night supporting lows in the 30s to low 40s.

Friday - Saturday:

Potent northern stream trough coming in from the northern
Plains/Great Lakes will swing a cold front across southern New
England on Friday - in association with a sub-995 mb low that moves
through southeast Canada. Despite cloud cover and warm-sector/pre-
cold frontal showers, southwest breezes and 850 mb temps in the
upper positive single digits Celsius should push highs into the 50s,
about 5-10 degrees above normal. At the moment, doesn't appear to be
much QPF associated with this frontal passage.

Timing the cold front across still is a bit uncertain, though most
areas are in the post-frontal air mass by late Friday into Friday
night. Strong cold/dry advection behind the front with 850 mb temps
falling to around -6 to -9C by Friday night on NW 850 mb winds 40-50
kts should produce some teens to 20s wind chills Friday night, along
with another period of enhanced NW winds out on the waters. Looks
like best chance for post-frontal snow showers is west of our
forecast area into the favored lake effect areas. Lows fall back
into the mid 20s to mid 30s areawide.

Saturday looks to be a generally dry and blustery day with high
pressure to our south and weak shortwave ridging aloft. Trending
towards below-normal temperatures with highs upper 30s to upper 40s
(mildest Cape/Islands, coldest in the Berkshires/NW Franklin and
northern Worcester Counties). Lows upper 20s to mid 30s.

reaching the CT valley this afternoon. NE gusts 20-25 kt over
the Cape and increasing to 30 kt over ACK.

Tonight...
Widespread MVFR with areas of IFR. Patchy drizzle or interior
freezing drizzle possible in the evening, then steadier rain
overspreading eastern New Eng overnight with pockets of light
freezing rain in the interior. NE gusts 20-30 kt along the coast
and 35 kt over the Islands.

Monday...
MVFR/IFR in rain and fog. Pockets of freezing rain possible in
the morning in the interior. NE gusts 20-30 kt in the coastal
plain and 30-40 kt Cape/Islands.

KBOS TAF...Moderate confidence in TAF. Expect MVFR cigs
developing today.

KBDL TAF...Moderate confidence in TAF. Expect MVFR cigs
developing this afternoon.

A storm surge of 1.5 to 2 ft is expected during the high tide
Mon afternoon as the low level jet is nearly coincident with the
time of the high tide or just a bit after. Astronomical high
tide is 10.3 ft MLLW at Boston and 3.7 ft MLLW at Nantucket
Harbor so this will bring the potential for pockets of minor
coastal flooding to much of the eastern MA coast. Seas offshore
up to 15 ft will add to the impact along the coast and may
bring minor beach erosion. Coastal flood advisory has been
issued for the eastern MA coast including Nantucket. However,
winds/storm surge will not be enough to result in a significant
coastal flood event.
