.SYNOPSIS...

High pressure offshore will maintain clouds across
Southern New England today. Warmer air leads the next weather
system tonight and Thursday, bringing an increasing chance of
showers. The associated cold front will then move through
Southern New England late Thursday night into early Friday,
bringing a period of showers areawide as well as potentially
damaging winds to southeastern Massachusetts and southern coasts
of Rhode Island, the Cape and the Islands. High pressure then
settles in for the weekend into early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

2 PM Update...

An abundance of clouds and rather light winds remained in place
across the region at mid afternoon. Warm advection aloft
coupled with even a period of partial sunshine across southeast
New England has resulted in mild temps. At mid afternoon, most
locales were in the lower to middle 60s, but a few spots across
southeast New England were between 65 and 70.

Dry weather has prevailed across much of the region into mid
afternoon. However, scattered showers and patchy drizzle were
moving onto the south coast as a southerly low level jet was
beginning to strengthen. Expect this trend to continue with
scattered showers spreading northward across the region through
early this evening.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...

Tonight...

Flow continues southwest aloft and south at low levels. This
moves a warm front north through the region, although the best
advection and lift will be to our north and west. It will also
maintain the moist flow with an increasing chance of showers
overnight.

Low level south flow increases to 30-40 kt during the night, but
probably surface gusts 20 kts near the coast. With dew points
increasing through the 50s, expect min temps in that same range.

Thursday...

Increasing south to southwest winds aloft with the 850 mb jet
reaching 50-60 kt by late afternoon. Similar winds are forecast
down to 950 mb as well. This should support surface gusts of 35
to possibly 40 kt. The increasing low level flow will mean
increasing warm humid advection, supporting lift and shower
production. The best chance of showers favors Western and
Central MA and Northern CT. PW values are forecast to increase
to around 1.75 inches, quite high for the end of October. We are
anticipating a total of 1-2 inches of rain from this system.

Temperatures at 950 mb move up a little more, to 16C. This
should support Thursday max temps in the 60s.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Strong frontal system to bring a period of strong/damaging
  winds at least to the South Coast, Cape Cod and the Islands,
  along with brief heavy rains overnight into early Friday.

* Non-diurnal temperature trends Thursday night and Friday.

* After early showers eastern areas Friday, blustery with
  falling temperatures.

* Dry pattern for the weekend through Tuesday, with seasonably
  cool temperatures.

Details...

Thursday Night Into Friday:

Compared to yesterday, there remains little/nuanced overall
change regarding the strong frontal system/sharp cold front.

While uncertainty exists on the extent to which
mixing/transport of winds to the surface can occur, given
continued guidance trends indicating strong 925-850 mb southwest
jet oriented towards the South Coast, Cape Cod and the Islands,
have hoisted a high wind watch from 06z/2AM to 15z/11AM Friday
for this area, with gale watches also in effect for all waters
from 00z/8 PM Thursday to 00z/8 PM Friday.

Timing and hazard-specific details follow:

(a) Winds

Southwest winds/jet will continue to increase ahead of the
progged cold front areawide; both the 00z NAM, GFS and ECMWF
950-925 mb show this jet initially around 45-50 kts by 00z, then
increasing in the 60 to 70 kt range across the south coast,
Cape Cod and the Islands into the waters toward 06z, with the
GFS being the most robust indicating potential for 80 kt flow in
this isobaric level. 925 mb jet further inland is not as strong
- topping out around 40 kts across far western MA/CT to nearing
60 kts towards the I-95 corridor and into southeastern MA/RI.
Strengthening low-level flow will also be accompanied by a
robust pressure tendency rise/fall couplet with a likely fine-
line of heavy showers surges eastward across southern New
England between around 09z-15z.

The biggest question mark is on how much of the winds mix to
the surface. Strong low-level warm advection in the lowest part
of the column may keep stability profiles closer to weakly
stable until we get on the backside of the cold front; that
stability profile could in turn result in less of a percentage
of this strong jet to translate to surface gusts. Felt the most
confident on winds capable of producing damage across the Cape
and the Islands, into the southern coast of MA and towards Block
Island and Newport Counties. Even if 60 percent of the flow
mixed to the ground, that still gets you at least into Advisory
criteria, with potential for stronger. What may also transpire
is strong/damaging winds could accompany the front itself
embedded in the dynamic/strong cold frontal heavy showers
(accompanied by elevated instability/thunder). Do feel potential
exists for 40 to 60 mph gusts in the Watch area, especially in
the pre-dawn to early-mid Friday morning period. So this may be
a little bit different than prior strong wind events experienced
in October. Given the potential and the model
signals/consistency, think it was worth raising awareness with
the Watch at this point in time.

Best potential for mixing areawide is actually when the flow
turns west behind the cold front into Friday, with sharp cold
advection and clearing skies helping to steepen the lapse rates.
Sharp drying, rising pressure tendencies should produce at
least quite breezy to gusty conditions in the interior (perhaps
strong enough to result in minor/sporadic instances of tree
limbs being downed in the morning). However mixed layer wind
speeds tend to decrease as the mixed layer deepens.

(b) Rain/Thunder Potential

About the only subtle change is that there may be something of
a break in shower coverage through early Thursday evening -
reflected in the NAM/GFS PoP/QPF fields between 00-03z. Period
of heaviest rains for the overnight still looks to be collated
with the frontal passage - at the moment, this appears to be
during the overnight/early Friday morning period (06-14z).
Showalter indices drop to near/just below 0 along the
coastal/offshore waters into a portion of the South Coast, Cape
and the Islands, which suggest some thunder potential can't be
ruled out during the overnight hrs. Though the period of
heaviest rains is relatively short given the front will likely
be racing east at a good clip, and that may preclude much if any
even nuisance poor drainage/leaf-clogged storm drain flooding.
Indicated rainfall amounts mainly from a half inch to an inch,
tending wetter further west. By Friday late morning/noontime,
most areas are dry.

(c) Temperatures:

Sided temperatures toward non-diurnal tendencies given stout
warm advection all night Thursday night, and an early frontal
passage Friday with ineffective sun amid strong cold advection
translating to falling temperatures Friday. Other than western
MA/CT where lows may occur before the pre-dawn hours, look for
lowest temperatures Thursday night to occur early, with
temperatures at sunrise from the mid 50s western MA/CT Valley to
the mid 60s in central/eastern MA and the Cape. With few
exceptions, temperatures at sunrise will also be the highs for
the day Friday, with temps by mid-day falling into the upper 40s
to mid 50s.

Friday Night through Tuesday:

High pressure settles in for Friday night, with lightening
winds setting the stage for good radiational cooling nights both
Friday and Saturday nights. Lows in the upper 20s to mid/upper
30s each night, with highs Saturday into the 50s.

Sunday into Monday still looking at continued generally dry
weather with seasonable temperatures. Next chance of showers
doesn't appear until Tuesday, though these look on the light
side.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Thursday night/...Moderate confidence.

This afternoon...Mainly lower end MVFR to IFR conditions were
present at mid afternoon. These conditions should continue
for the remainder of the afternoon. Scattered showers will
expand northward through early evening across the region. Light
SE winds.

Tonight...Conditions should further deteriorate to IFR/LIFR
conditions in low clouds and fog. Scattered showers and areas of
drizzle are expected too. LLWS develops along the coastal plain
toward daybreak.

Thursday...Mainly low MVFR to IFR conditions Thursday with bands
of showers working across the region. Southerly winds will
increase with 25 to 35 knots developing during the afternoon.

Thursday night...Low end MVFR to IFR conditions dominate with
periods of showers focused late Thu night into the overnight
hours. Strong southerly winds expected with gusts of 35 to 45
knots along with LLWS.

KBOS Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF.

Outlook /Thursday Night through Sunday/...

Friday: VFR. Strong winds with gusts up to 45 kt. Chance SHRA.

Friday Night: VFR. Windy with areas of gusts up to 35 kt.

Saturday through Saturday Night: VFR.

Winds increasing out of the southeast and south. This in turn
will re-build seas through the period. Five foot seas return to
the outer waters tonight and closer to shore on Thursday, while
winds increase to 25 kt Thursday morning and gust to 30 kt late
in the day. Small craft advisory headlines will be up for most
of our waters for tonight and/or Thursday.

Outlook /Thursday Night through Sunday/...

Thursday Night through Friday: Moderate risk for gale force
winds with gusts up to 45 kt. Rough seas up to 14 ft. Rain
showers.
