.SYNOPSIS...
Drier this morning with brief high pressure prior to a
stronger storm this evening though Tuesday with another shot of rain
and high elevation snows. Closed upper low and associated cold pool
will linger over Southern New England into Wednesday morning,
then move off to the east. Weak cold fronts from Central Canada
will sweep through on Thursday and again late Friday. High
pressure then brings dry weather for the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

The rain showers have exited the region this morning as the low
continues to move away and we see a brief rise in heights. This
comes as the high pressure to our north nudges its way south a bit
through mid-late morning, which has allowed drier air to invade in
the low levels, generally 925-850mb. Model soundings indicate this
layer will moisten by late afternoon/evening ahead of the next bout
of rain. Still plenty of moisture aloft for a cloudy day, though
much of it will be dry. Given NE flow and lack of solar insolation,
high temperatures don't rebound much, into the upper 40s/low 50s.
Winds will be gusty, increasing through the morning and peaking mid
afternoon. This as the next system approaches increasing the
pressure gradient, and a 30-35kt LLJ moves overhead. Most can expect
sustained winds up to 15-25 mph out of the east/northeast. Model
soundings indicate potential for gusts 25-35 mph, strongest along
the coast and in higher elevations of central MA.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...

A highly anomalous spring nor'easter approaches by Monday evening.
This brings with it a cold, windy, and wet period, with potential
for wet high terrain snow overnight. To our east ahead of a
negatively tilted 500mb trough a sfc low over the Great Lakes region
approaches, generating a secondary low along the frontal boundary to
our south. This is the low that will move up and by SNE Monday
evening through Tuesday.

PWATs approaching 1" with diffluent flow aloft ahead of the
shortwave, favorable jet stream positioning at 300 and 925mb, and
isentropic lift on the front end of the low will bring a slug of
widespread rain through the region Monday afternoon through Tuesday
morning. Rainfall totals look to be 0.5-1", though some hi-res
guidance want's to set up a localized swath of higher amounts
somewhere along the south coast, potentially in response to focused
forcing from an inverted trough that develops north of the low this
afternoon.

More interesting than the rain though is the potential for some
wintry precipitation given that we've already reached mid May. Many
in the higher terrain saw some snow yesterday afternoon and we'll
likely see a repeat Monday night into early Tuesday morning given
the anomalously cold temperatures through the entire column. Looking
at max temps in the 925-700mb layer we see a period of time between
00Z-12Z Tuesday that the atmosphere will be below freezing down to
925mb. For those in the higher elevations, generally 1500 ft and
above, this means a chance of seeing some not insignificant snowfall
before sunrise Tuesday. Of help will be the dynamical cooling
processes in heavy precipitation, more likely if we have a trowal
setting up to the northwest of the low as it occludes and we see the
potential for deformation banding over NW MA. As mentioned by the
previous forecaster, one caveat will be the exact track of the 500mb
low and its effect on the placement of the dry slot wrapping east of
center. Current thinking is that will not be an inhibitor. Also,
being that we're well into the growing season, take note that this
could pose a problem for any tender outdoor plants.

Winds continue gusting overnight as the low makes its closest pass,
25-30 mph for most. Given the prolonged E/NE fetch which will have
been going for nearly 48 hours by Tuesday morning, we'll need to
keep an eye on the eastern shoreline for potential coastal impacts.
Forecast is for a 1-2 ft surge, but any more and we could see some
splashover or flooding of especially vulnerable roadways during the
Tuesday morning high tide. Winds slowly subside through the day
Tuesday with continued scattered rain showers under the cold
pool/exiting upper low.

Northeast USA with at least two shortwaves gliding through the
flow. Upper ridge over the Rockies moves east during the week
and crosses the Northeast USA Saturday and Sunday. Trough over
the Eastern Pacific follows the ridge, digging over the Plains
and bringing showers/storms to the Plains and Great Lakes.

Upper heights start below normal Tuesday night/Wednesday, but
trend higher/milder through the second half of the week.

Operational have been changeable from run to run. Mass fields
from the 00Z run are in agreement for Wednesday, but then
develop differences in their features Thursday through Sunday.
Even so, there is some agreement on high pressure being in
control for the weekend. Confidence in the long term forecast is
low-moderate.

Concerns...

Tuesday night...

Surface low moves off to the Maritimes, but upper low remains
overhead with cold pool instability and deep moisture through
much of the night. Lift through this moist column is about 15-20
mb/hour which is low but adequate to generate a few showers.
All of this trends northeast overnight, which speaks to a drying
trend overnight.

Wednesday...

Still cyclonic flow aloft, but moisture cross sections show
drying below 900 mb and above 700 mb. This should allow partial
clearing, but do not wish to be too optimistic with the upper
low still in the neighborhood. Mixing to 850 mb taps upper temps
of 0C to +2C, which suggests max sfc temps 55 to 65F.

Shortwave trough from Central Canada approaches overnight with
increased moisture and a resurgence of the cold pool. This
should bring in scattered showers later at night.

Thursday-Friday...

Shortwave moves overhead Thursday morning, followed by drying
in the surface layer and above 700 mb. A 100-110 kt northern jet
drives a cold front southeast from Central Canada Friday with
limited moisture but enough lift to support a few showers.

Saturday-Sunday...

GFS shows high pressure building surface and aloft for the
weekend. The ECMWF shows a surface high over New England, but
an upper low lingering over the Maritimes with an upper ridge
over the Midwest. With the developing storm over the Plains, any
Gulf moisture seems aimed at the Great Lakes rather than the
Northeast. This suggests a dry period with the ECMWF heights
near normal and GFS above normal. Normal temps next weekend are
roughly: BOS 67/51; PVD 69/49; BDL 72/49; ORH 67/48

(especially along E/NE coastal MA), all centered around Monday
evening. Will begin to see improvement beginning late Tuesday as
comma-head rains dissipate over S New England and winds back out
of the NW. VSBYs likely to improve faster than CIGs during this
timeframe. By Wednesday morning, high terrain remains socked in
while MVFR-IFR lingerings across E/NE MA terminals.

Height of E/NE flow around midnight Monday into Tuesday, sustained
around 20 kts, gusts around 30 kts, seas building 8 to 12 feet, as
high as 14 feet on the E/NE outer waters into the Gulf of ME.
Expecting a downward trend of winds quickly on Tuesday, whereas seas
will be slower going into Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

There is the threat for high elevation wet snows that will contribute
to lower visibility as well as minor accumulations. Higher confidence
along the higher terrain of the Berkshires, Worcester Hills, and even

is likely to be accumulations on the order of around 1 possibly up
around 2 inches. Highest elevations of the Berkshires could possibly
see advisory level snows.
