.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure tracks south of New England tonight bringing a
chilly rain to the region with high elevation snows. The low
exits out to sea Tuesday with just a few spotty light afternoon
showers but cold air wraps behind the storm into New England
Tuesday with highs only 45-50! Dry and milder Wednesday followed
by a chance of showers Wed night but dry and warmer weather
follows Thu. A round of showers possible Friday but trends
suggest dry and turning warmer this weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/...
4 PM update...
Impressive/anomalous closed low over the eastern Lakes with
vigorous short wave rotating thru the Mid Atlc states inducing
cyclogenesis off DE coast per surface obs and buoys. This low
tracks near the 40N/70W benchmark around 06z resulting in a
chilly rain this evening and overnight. Low level easterly jet
swipes the coastline with gusts up to 40 mph possible, strongest
for Nantucket. Just adding to the damp/raw conditions. Rain
intensity will be on the light to moderate side. The high
returns on radar at 4 pm are bright banding per CC radar
product.
As for snow potential, current temps in the high terrain are
still in the mid 50s along with dew pts in the mid 30s. Thus a
lot of warm air to erode and wet bulb temps still well above
freezing. 3km NAM soundings along with HREF eventually cool the
column this evening with snow levels/freezing heights descending
down to about 2 kft later this evening and eventually down to
about 1 kft. However by then strongest lift exits the region
06z-09z along with dry slot overspreading the region including
the snow growth area. Thus small window of opportunity for
accumulating snow. However with Hi Res guidance and model
soundings keeping surface temps above freezing, accumulating
snows likely confined to elevations above 1000 ft and probably
more likely above 1500 ft with accumulations confined to the
colder non paved surfaces. So expecting a coating to 2 inches at
these elevations with little if any in the interior valleys. If
precip intensity is greater than models suggest yielding
additional dynamical and diabatic cooling, then a low prob of
3-6" possible at these higher elevations above 1500 ft in
western and northwest MA. This is reflected in our snow probs.
However the more likely scenario is a coating to 2".

.SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Low pres southeast of Nantucket at 8 am and exits northeast
toward Nova Scotia during the day. Thus steady morning rains end
with dry slot overspreading the area. However moist NNE flow
will likely keep drizzle going across southeast MA into early
afternoon. Should see some drying as departing wave exits and
next short wave rotating thru the upper low approaches late in
the day. Can't rule out a few spot showers in the afternoon with
cold pool aloft combined with cyclonic flow. Although activity
should not be widespread. Another round of showers possible late
in the day as this next robust short wave approaches.
Very chilly tomorrow especially considering rain will be ending
in the morning. But temps around zero at 850 mb, overcast and
NNE winds highs likely only topping out between 45-50. Keep in

Our persistent wet weather pattern is expected to continue for
much of this portion of the forecast, due to a meandering mid
level low between the Great Lakes and the Maritimes through
Wednesday. Some ridging tries to build in late this week into
this weekend. Have greater confidence in the details through
Wednesday, the quite a bit less for the remainder of this
forecast period.
Below normal temperatures expected through Friday, then near
normal temperatures this weekend into Monday.
The presence of the nearby cold pool associated with the mid
level low will keep a mention of showers in the forecast much
of this time. However, not expecting a washout on any given
day. Wednesday is more likely to be a dry as moisture become
more limited. This trend reverses Wednesday night into Thursday
as a significant shortwave passes by.
Will need to see how much ridging develops towards this weekend.
Kept a risk for showers in the forecast, but these day could be
drier if the amount of humidity is limited.

Could be some minor/nuisance coastal flooding Tuesday morning
high tide along the eastern MA coast. The culprit is coastal low
pressure southeast of Nantucket moving out to sea. Tides
relatively low with a 10.28 ft astro tide for Boston 751 am Tue.
ESTOFS and ETSS surge values currently off by 0.5 to 0.7 ft.
This combined with their surge simulations suggest a possible
surge of 1.5 ft to 2.0 ft with Tue morning high tide. These
water levels will still be below flood stage however with wave
action 5-10 ft just offshore the combination could result in
minor water inundation in the most vulnerable locations. Thus
will issue a statement to address this.

Rain will continue late this afternoon across Massachusetts. However as temperatures cool this evening and especially overnight rain will change to snow at elevations above 1000 ft with snow accumulations likely confined to elevations above 1500 ft with accumulations ranging from a coating to 2 inches, with little if any at the lower elevations. These higher elevations include the towns of Charlemont, Barre, Fitchburg, Chesterfield, Blandford, and Ayer. If temperatures cool more rapidly than expected then there is a very low probability that higher amounts of 3-6 inches are possible at elevations above 1,500 ft. However the more likely scenario is for a coating to 2 inches. In addition given temperatures will likely only cool into the mid 30s overnight, any snow accumulations will likely be confined to non paved surfaces, thus limiting the impacts to travel. Nocera
