Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 446 PM AKST Sat Jan 12 2019 .SYNOPSIS... Northern Alaska now transitioning from a very cold pattern to a southerly flow pattern with temperatures warming rapidly over the next day south of the Brooks Range. There are windy conditions and cold wind chills over much of Northern Alaska now that will retreat to the North Slope on Sunday. Snow, blowing snow, and strong winds will spread to much of the West Coast and southwest Interior tonight and Sunday while the Eastern Interior will have moderate chinook winds on Sunday. && .DISCUSSION... Models have similar solutions through Mon. We chose to use the GFS through Tue. A low pressure trough over the Interior of Alaska will move over the North Slope of Alaska Sun PM. This is causing east winds over Interior and West Coast south of Nome now that will spread north to the North Slope on Sun. Brief snow of about 1 inch accumulation will move north over the West Coast and southwest Interior with this trough. A 995 mb low in the North Pacific south of Adak will move to the southeast Bering Sun as a 956 mb low, and to the Central Bering Sea on Mon PM as a 970 mb low. A weather front associated with this low will move to Bristol Bay tonight, to Northern Sound to Fairbanks by 3pm Sun, to the Chukotsk Pen to Point Hope to Umiat by 3am Mon, and then weakening along the West Coast by 3pm Mon. This will bring 3-6 inches of snow to the West Coast and southwest Interior Sun through Mon, and bring blowing snow with near blizzard conditions to much of the West Coast.
