Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
A strong low and associated fronts will move north northeast
across the eastern Bering Sea and the West Coast, bringing snow,
blowing snow, and strong winds to much of the West Coast today
through Sunday, and will bring rain as far north as the Seward
Peninsula by tonight. Across the Alaska Range, strong chinook flow
is ongoing with southerly wind gusts to 65 mph in the passes, as
well as very warm temperatures.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a low centered just northeast of the Pribilofs
this afternoon will lift northeast tonight to be located
southwest of Nunivak Island Sunday morning, moving onshore the
lower Y-K Delta Sunday afternoon. The low moves very slowly
northward as it weakens Sunday night to be centered near Mountain
Village Monday morning and near Unalakleet Monday afternoon. The
low continues to weaken Monday night becoming an open wave over
Norton Sound Monday night. Weak shortwaves will rotate around the
low as it slowly moves across the Y-K Delta.

A low in the high Arctic this afternoon moves south southeast
through Monday, with a broad trough stretching south to the
weakening low near Unalakleet by Monday afternoon. The trough
extends south to a weakening low skirting south of Atka Monday
night, with the trough axis shifting eastward closer to the West
Coast by Tuesday afternoon.

Surface...A 996 mb low located 150 NM north of Richards Island
this afternoon will lift northeast to be a 996 mb low over Banks
Island Sunday morning.

A 1015 mb high stretching south out of the high Arctic this
afternoon will strengthen to be a 1015 mb high Sunday afternoon
400 NM northwest of Wrangel Island and a 1023 mb high 100 NM north
of Wrangel Island Monday afternoon. The low will continue
southeastward Tuesday to be a 1025 mb high located 200 NM
northwest of Wainwright.

A 955 mb low 100 NM southeast of St Paul Island this afternoon
will move northeast to be a 956 mb low near Kuskokwim Bay Sunday
morning and a 964 mb low near Newtok Sunday afternoon. The low
will slowly move north northeast to be a 974 mb low centered
southeast of Mountain Village Monday morning, continuing northeast
to be a 984 mb low centered over the Nulato Hills Monday afternoon
and a 992 mb low centered over Unalakleet Tuesday morning. The low
will continue to weaken during the day Tuesday and dissipate by
Tuesday afternoon.

A 994 mb low will move to be 75 NM southwest of Amchitka Monday
morning, continuing eastward to be a 987 mb low 100 NM northeast
of Dutch Harbor Tuesday morning.

Models...12Z model suite initialized well against the 12Z and 15Z
surface obs. Models are in good agreement throughout the short
term period with the overall synoptic pattern.

North Slope and Brooks Range: A weather front will remain across
the North Slope today and Sunday, bringing periods of snow. East
to northeast winds will prevail and increase Sunday as the
pressure gradient tightens as the West Coast low move north.
Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph expected from Utqiagvik west with
15 to 25 mph expected east of Utqiagvik. The combination of
falling snow and gusty winds will result in areas of blowing snow,
especially along the Western Arctic Coast where visibility could
be reduced to one half mile or less at times through Sunday night.
A shortwave moving across the North Slope will enhance snowfall
Sunday night and Monday, with snow lingering into Tuesday.
Snowfall totals will generally range from one to three inches,
with higher amounts of up to five inches on the leeside of the
western Brooks Range. Winds will diminish Monday. Temperatures
cool through Monday.

West Coast and Western Interior: Snow, blowing snow, and strong
winds will spread north across the West Coast today and continue
through Sunday. Gusts to 60 mph expected for St Lawrence Island
and the Chukchi Sea Coast, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph expected
further south. Winds will diminish during the day Sunday for most
areas, with stronger winds continuing at St Lawrence Island and
along the Chukchi Sea Coast. Blowing snow will accompany the
strong and gusty winds, reducing visibility to one half mile or
less at times. Snow will continue through Tuesday as the low moves
north across the Y-K Delta and Norton Sound and dissipates. South
of the Seward Peninsula, snow will mix with or turn to rain.
Additional snowfall accumulations of one to three inches are
expected from Galena west and Selawik south, with higher amounts
in the Nulato Hills and on St Lawrence Island. Temperatures
cooling Monday and Tuesday.

Central and Eastern Interior: Snow will spread across the Interior
Monday and linger into Tuesday as a weather front and a shortwave
move across. Initially, the immediate Fairbanks area and southeast
will remain snow free as downsloping from the Alaska Range shadows
out the area, but snow moves in late Monday evening and Monday
night as winds in the Alaska Range diminish. Snowfall totals will
generally range in the one to three inch range, with the heaviest
snow falling from Bettles west, with four to seven inches of
snowfall accumulation possible Monday through Tuesday. Chinook
event ongoing in the Alaska Range with gusts to 65 mph. The
strongest winds are expected this afternoon and tonight. Winds are
expected to diminish Sunday morning and afternoon. Temperatures
begin to cool Monday, although still above normal.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
