morning. A 982 mb low will move north through the Bering Strait 
early Monday to 200 nm north of Cape Lisburne by Monday afternoon.

Point Lay by Tuesday afternoon and 100 NM N of Utqiagvik by

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong weather system that has tapped into a deep plume of
moisture will continue to bring a mixed bag of precipitation to
northern Alaska through the first part of the workweek, especially
to areas north and west of Fairbanks. This system will also bring
strong winds to the west coast tonight to areas along the west
coast. Strong gap winds will increase this evening in the Alaska
Range and will persist through Tuesday night.

.DISCUSSION...

Central and Eastern Interior: Strong southerly gap winds look to
persist in the Alaska Range through Tuesday evening. I opted to
extend out the High Wind Warnings out in time. A front moving to
the north through the Interior tonight will bring precipitation
as it moves through. Strong Chinook Winds over the Alaska Range
will help to limit the potential for precipitation for Fairbanks
and elsewhere in the Tanana Valley. North of Fairbanks, we expect
a mixed bag of precipitation. Because this system has a lot of
warm air associated with it, snow will likely change over to rain
or freezing rain by this evening. Precipitation with this front
will taper off tonight. A series of shortwaves associated with a
low in the Chukchi Sea will bring rain, freezing rain and snow to
areas just south of the Brooks Range on Monday and Tuesday. This
precipitation warrants extending out the ongoing Winter Weather
Advisories for zones 218 and 219. A front will push to the east
across the Interior on Wednesday bringing some snow, although the
details are still somewhat uncertain at the moment.

West Coast and Western Interior: A low moving to the north along
the west coast will bring a mixed bag of precipitation tonight.
Areas to the south of the Bering Strait will see mainly rain,
while areas to the north of the Bering Strait will see a mixture
of snow rain and freezing rain. The surface low will also bring
strong southerly winds to areas along the coast as well as parts
of the northwestern Interior tonight. Winds will diminish Monday
morning as the surface low moves to the north through the Chukchi
Sea. The aforementioned low will remained relatively stationary
in the Chukchi Sea into Tuesday. Shortwaves around this low will
allow for periods of rain and snow for Monday and Tuesday, especially
in upslope areas near the Brooks Range and on the Seward
Peninsula. The low will move off to the east Tuesday night and
Wednesday. This will push through one more round of precipitation
through the area. This will also cause a period of gusty westerly
winds to the Chukchi Sea Coast.

North Slope and Brooks Range: A weather front will push north
through the Brooks Range this evening. This front will bring a
mixture of snow early this evening, eventually changing over to
freezing rain overnight. The pressure gradient across the Brooks
Range will tighten up this evening as as low moves north into the
Chukchi Sea. This will bring southerly gap winds with gusts to 40
mph beginning late this evening. The front will move north of the
Brooks Range this evening bringing freezing rain to the Arctic
Coast late this evening through early Monday morning. Additionally,
as the front nears the coast, east winds will quickly ramp up to
around 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph across much of the
immediate coast.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Strong south winds will
accompany the low as it moves up the West Coast tonight. Winds
will be strong but brief, and may result in some elevated surf,
but no coastal flooding issues. As the low continues north and
east by mid week, west winds on the southern flank of the system
may cause some issues along the Chukchi Sea Coast.
