.SYNOPSIS...

A cold airmass will remain over the region tonight with low
temperatures ranging from the teens below zero across areas near
the Canadian border to the single digits above zero across
southwest Montana. Pacific moisture will spread east into the
Northern Rockies Thursday with snow developing and spreading east
across central and north-central Montana Thursday afternoon. Snow
is likely across much of the region Thursday night with heaviest
amounts focused over North central Montana. Snow will diminish
Friday afternoon and a slow warming and drying trend will develop
this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...

Tonight through Friday...The initial upper level trough that
brought snow to the region last night through this morning has
moves east with somewhat anticyclonic NW flow aloft over the
forecast area through Thursday morning. Somewhat unstable
conditions exist above the cold low-level airmass and this has
resulted in some snow showers this afternoon, especially along the
continental divide and these will gradually decrease though the
overnight period. Deep cold airmass is in place over N-central MT
where temperatures currently in the single digits above/below zero
will fall to the 5 below to 15 below zero with coldest readings
of 15 below to 25 below zero along the Canadian border. Surface
winds should diminish to less than 10 mph in most areas by this
evening, mitigating the wind chill effects occurring this
afternoon along the Hi-line where a wind chill advisory continues
through the rest of this afternoon.

Potent shortwave trough with associated moist plume in the eastern
Pacific will move onshore tomorrow and across MT Thursday night
through Friday morning. Snow will increase Thursday morning along
the continental divide north of MacDonald Pass Thursday morning
then spread east across much of North central MT Thursday
afternoon with snow continuing across these areas into Friday
morning before diminishing. Combined orographic and overrunning
lift will focus the heaviest precipitation amounts through Friday
morning along the Continental divide north of MacDonald Pass
where 1 foot or more of new snow is likely across the highest
elevations and the Winter storm Watch has been upgraded to a
winter storm warning. Models continue to depict a swath of
greatest overrunning precipitation along an axis from roughly Cut
Bank SE through northern Fergus county late thursday and Thursday
night. Will maintain the winter storm watch for these areas for
now as some uncertainty still exits on exact position of heaviest
snow amounts with 3 to 6 inches of snow likely for much of the
area but an embedded area of greater than 6 inches possible across
the previously mentioned axis. Southwest Montana will see
increasingly windy conditions develop late Thursday into Friday as
flow aloft increases and mixes down onto ridgetops. Main focus
for snowfall in southwest Montana will be associated with the
passage of the upper level wave Thursday night and largely focused
over the mountains, but some light accumulations are possible in
the valleys and this area will be monitored as well for possible
winter weather statements as well. Hoenisch

Saturday through Wednesday... Looking out ahead further into the
upcoming weekend and through next week, we continue to reside on
the east side of a dominant ridge axis across the US West Coast.
Latest European trends indicate the potential for small
disturbances riding the NW flow might produce some snow shower
activity late this weekend, but this trend has turned drier which
is understandable given a very dry tropospheric environment. By
the start of next week, the ridge should slowly progress eastward.
However, models are in good agreement on the potential for a very
strong Canadian Cold Front pushing southwards across the area
late Sunday night and into Monday. With modest forcing in
association with enough Pacific moisture feed given westerly
upper-level flow aloft, snow showers may likely break out along
the front. This would seem like the potential for another cold
snap across the area, but with the ridge propagating eastward, the
front may quickly build back east as a warm front allowing for
the return of near-normal temperatures by mid-week next week. KLG

Widespread areas of snow have moved away into eastern MT, with MVFR
cigs and flurries persisting a few more hours at our terminals in
North-central and SW MT. Expect variable VFR/MVFR conditions through
this evening through early Thursday with SCT/BKN low-level clouds.
Conditions begin to decline again after 15Z Thursday as the next
round of snow begins to organize over N-central MT. PN
