.SYNOPSIS...

A Canadian cold front has brought a significant drop in
temperatures across most of Northern and Central Montana this
morning. Additionally, an upper-level disturbance has helped
deliver widespread snow across the area. Expect periods of snow to
continue through the late morning to early afternoon hours before
we see a drying trend by this evening. We remain rather cold for
the next several days as we have transitioned into more of an
active pattern, with the next chance of widespread snow by late
Thursday into Friday. This will be followed by a gradual warming
and drying trend into this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...

Tonight through Wednesday night...Winter has returned with much
colder air and widespread snow for a large majority of the area
early this morning. The combination of an approaching upper-level
disturbance spreading Pacific moisture eastward, and much colder
temperatures thanks to a Canadian cold front has brought periods
of light to moderate snow for many. Early this morning, the
southward moving front has become locked into the mountains of
South-Central MT, or about just south of Helena to White Sulphur
Springs. Behind the front, strong northerly winds have driven
significant drops in temperatures across the area. The combination
of strong frontogenetic forcing, locally enhanced by terrain and
increasing upper-level dynamic forcing with the approaching upper-
level disturbance should still maintain, or atleast increase snow
coverage across a large majority of central and southern MT early
this morning. Impacts to focus on will reside closely to around
the I-90 Corridor, where some locally heavier snowfall will likely
bring down visibility and cause some slick spots, especially
across mountain passes. Areas to the north along the Hi-Line,
while is positioned well away from better frontogenetic forcing,
may still see an increase in snowfall through the early morning
hours as sufficient PVA/height falls in association with the upper
disturbance working east. The good news is this event will be
short lived, as the disturbance quickly departs east, taking the
necessary feed of moisture with it. We likely will dry out later
this afternoon and evening, with only a few lingering light snow
showers possible across Northern and Central MT along the
progressive NW flow. Additionally, temperatures wont climb far
today with many locations seeing highs in the single digits behind
the front, with 20's to 30's in SW MT. Tonight, temperatures will
bottom out below zero along and north of a Great Falls to
Lewistown line, which may continue to lead to icy road conditions
throughout the night. KLG

Thursday through Saturday...main forecast concerns over this period
is the next winter storm, which is poised to affect much of North
Central and portions of Southwest Montana, especially during the
Thursday evening through Friday morning timeframe.

The next and more potent winter storm of this work week to affect
the Northern Rockies Region, will begin to arrive along the coast of
the Pacific Northwest by the mid morning hours on Thursday. By 00z
Friday, the H500 speed maximum will begin to nose into Southwestern
Idaho, reaching Central Colorado by 12z Friday. The track of this
speed maximum and shortwave moving overhead, will place much of the
CWA beneath favorable synoptic lift Thursday evening through Friday
morning. Strong H700 flow will also provide strong upslope flow
along the Continental Divide and breezy winds to Southwest/Central
Montana, in addition to pumping in Pacific moisture in across the
CWA. PWAT values Thursday morning of 0.15"-0.25", will quickly climb
to around 0.25"-0.35" by Thursday evening and max out around 0.3"-
0.45" prior midnight Friday. Impressive mid-level frontogenetic lift
will begin to develop Thursday afternoon over North Central Montana
as the shortwave approaches, persisting up through the midnight hour
Friday. It is during this Thursday afternoon through midnight Friday
timeframe, when the most intense snowfall is expected along the
Continental Divide, mountains of Central Montana, and across the
plains of North Central Montana. For this reason, have gone ahead
and issued a Winter Storm Watch for all of my North Central Montana
zones and Rocky Mountain Front. Snowfall accumulations across these
areas of 6+" are possible at lower elevations, with totals
approaching or surpassing 12" over the mountains and at mountain
pass level. Lighter snowfall amounts are expected across Southwest
Montana, with the exception of the mountains in Beaverhead and
Gallatin counties where 6+" will be possible. While future winter
weather highlights will likely be needed for Southwest Montana, felt
that the limited areal extent of heavier snow did not warrant a
Watch at this time. It should be noted that breezy winds across this
area will likely cause blowing/drifting snow, and will need to be
closely monitored.

As the shortwave slides east of the region Friday morning, expect a
decrease in the areal coverage of snowfall and intensity. Some
breaks in the clouds Friday night across North Central Montana will
allow temperatures to fall well below zero, especially given the
expected new snow cover. Some moderation in temperatures is then
expected during the day on Saturday as southwest downsloping winds
strengthen. - Moldan

Saturday night through Wednesday... Looking out ahead further
into the upcoming weekend and through next week, we continue to
reside on the east side of a dominant ridge axis across the US
West Coast. Latest European trends indicate the potential for
small disturbances riding the NW flow might produce some snow
shower activity late this weekend, but this trend has turned drier
which is understandable given a very dry tropospheric
environment. By the start of next week, the ridge should slowly
progress eastward. However, models are in good agreement on the
potential for a very strong Canadian Cold Front pushing southwards
across the area late Sunday night and into Monday. With modest
forcing in association with enough Pacific moisture feed given
westerly upper-level flow aloft, snow showers may likely break out
along the front. This would seem like the potential for another
cold snap across the area, but with the ridge propagating
eastward, the front may quickly build back east as a warm front
allowing for the return of near-normal temperatures by mid-week
next week. KLG

Widespread areas of snow will continue across terminals early this
morning with the exception of BZN and EKS, where a slow transition
from rain to all snow will likely begin during or slightly before
sunrise. Expect periods of snow to continue through the morning
hours reducing CIG's and signifficantly limiting visibility with
flight categories ranging from IFR to LIFR at times. Fortunately,
conditions should begin to improve from northwest to southeast by
late morning and early afternoon as this system quickly departs to
the east. However, lingering light snow showers may continue to be
possible for LWT, CTB and HVR later this afternoon, which may allow
for intermittent MVFR/IFR conditions. KLG
