Rainfall of 1 to 2 inches will combine with continued
snow melt to cause significant rises along the Dan
River over the next couple of days. These rises are
expected to result in minor flooding at South Boston
this weekend.

Dan River at South Boston affecting Halifax County
Light to moderate rainfall will continue across the area today, with rainfall totals during the last 24 hours or so combined with today's rainfall
amounting to 1 to 2 inches across the region. This rainfall will combine
with continued melting snowfall to result in minor rises along the lower
end of the Dan and Roanoke River basins. Minor flooding is expected to
begin soon along the lower end of the Dan River near South Boston. Minor
flooding will also be possible at Paces and Danville and is being monitored closely of the need for possible flood warnings there later in time.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Do not drive through flooded areas...the water may be much deeper
than you think.

.SYNOPSIS...
Warm frontal rains associated with a low pressure system over the
mid Mississippi Valley will overspread the region this evening into
Saturday. As this rain combines with snowmelt, the potential for
river flooding will exist into the weekend. Drier weather returns
late in the weekend into early next week as high pressure builds in
from the northwest. Temperatures will trend near to above normal
through early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 630 PM EST Friday...
Wedge keeping majority of the moderate to heavy rain out of the
area this evening. However, light rain, drizzle and fog will
cover the area into Saturday morning. Warm air moving over
residual snowpack may increase areas of dense fog, especially as
rainfall rates decrease overnight. At this time, visibilities
running between 2-4 miles with higher elevations less than 1
mile.
As of 250 PM EST Friday...
Flood watch continues this afternoon into Saturday afternoon.
The combination of rainfall and snowmelt may lead to creek and
stream flooding and rises on the headwaters of the Roanoke and upper
James basins, as well as part of the New River.
Initially, the rain has been relatively light this morning into
early afternoon as it encounters the stable surface wedge of
high pressure. As anticipated by the Highres models, The rain
has slowly advanced north and eastward as southeast flow advects
elevated plume of PWATs northward against the Blue Ridge
Mountains. Posted a SPS for highlight the fog this afternoon
into tonight. Moisture/elevated dewpoints above freezing advect
atop a lingering snowpack can generate a layer of fog. Added
patchy fog tonight into Saturday.
The rain will continue to become widespread and increase in
intensity later this afternoon into tonight as the closed upper
low moves from eastern Texas to Mississippi by 12z Saturday.
Storm total rainfall still expected to be 1 to 2 inches on top
of several inches of snow cover in the flood watch. Lighter
rainfall totals as one moves northwest.
The best forcing, lift and moisture will be this evening into early
Saturday morning. Will have to watch for any convective elements
into southeast portion of forecast area. The main area of heavier
rain to our south across North Carolina may push east into the
Coastal plain tonight. More confident that the south to southeast
low-level flow will create orographic enhancement along the eastern
slopes of the Blue Ridge. Used an non-diurnal temperature curve for
tonight with low temperatures from the mid 30s to the mid 40s.
The upper low will lift northeast to Tennessee by Saturday
afternoon. Widespread rain Saturday morning will taper off to
scattered showers Saturday afternoon. Warm frontal and isentropic
lift will be shifting mainly north and east of the forecast area
Saturday morning as a dry slot within the deep wound up system moves
northeast into the western portions of forecast area. Drier air will
move northeast as the core of the upper low drifts into eastern
Tennessee and eventually over southwest Virginia Saturday night.
High temperatures Saturday will range from the lower to mid 40s in
the mountains to the mid 50s in the far southwest mountains.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 250 PM EST Friday...
Upper low will be across the southern/central Appalachians Saturday
night then shift east-northeast to off the mid-Atlantic coast by
Sunday afternoon.
Occlusion of low at the surface takes place with main low taking
over along the mid-Atlantic coast late Sat night. Expect deeper
moisture to slide out of the area by Sunday wrap around moisture on
a northwest flow will leave shower chances around across the north
and western CWA as the upper low moves across. At the moment temps
aloft and the low levels support mainly liquid but could see enough
colder air under the upper low for isolated snow in the highest
elevations of the southern Appalachians.
Forecast soundings showing moisture for snow growth region drying
out Sunday night so may see drizzle instead of rain showers. Kept
both in there for now, with possible snizzle in the western
Greenbrier to Bath County mountains by late Sunday night.
Drier air shifts eastward Monday with clearing skies. Cold advection
is limited behind this system with temps close to normal.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 1235 PM EST Friday...
Dry Tuesday-Wednesday.
Global models still showing differences late this period with
respect to the storm system moving across the MS Valley beyond
Wednesday. The 00z ECM is more progressive returning moisture faster
into the area ahead of a front as earl as Thursday morning, while
the GFS shows a more broad upper flow and lags the precip until 12
hours later. At the moment will lean toward blend of these and
previous forecast, with an ensemble approach. Appears temps overall
will be at or above freezing with precip arrives so mainly rain
shower chances Thursday with best chance Thu night.
Models deepen this system across New England Friday with surge of
winds so bumped up winds and gusts, with linger rain/snow showers in
the mountains.

.AVIATION /23Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 640 PM EST Friday...
Poor flying conditions expected into Saturday with low clouds,
rain, drizzle and fog.
Warm front has moved north over the wedge this evening with
most areas seeing light rain and/or areas of fog and drizzle.
With warm air moving over residual snowpack, widespread IFR
conditions exist across mountain valleys and east of the Blue
Ridge to LIFR conditions or lower for higher elevations. These
conditions may improve some Saturday afternoon, but not by much.
There is the potential for low-level wind shear as light
easterly winds increase to around 40 kts tonight. The 850 mb
low level jet will pivot quickly to the north Saturday.
Forecast confidence is medium to high on ceilings, visibilities
and winds during the TAF period.
Extended Aviation Discussion...
The upper low is expected to move east of the area Sunday
leaving scattered MVFR conditions with showers and low cigs.
Trends should feature improving conditions overall with some
lingering shower threat Sunday, but then transition to VFR
Monday and Tuesday as drying takes place. VFR conditions will
continue Wednesday.

.HYDROLOGY...
As of 650 PM EST Friday...
Flood watches remain in effect roughly from I-81 and the NC
mountains east through late Sat afternoon.
So far we have had around an inch in the NC mountains, with
most sitting well under a half inch. Rainfall rates and snowmelt
have been low and slow.
However, another inch or more of rain on the snow and soaked
ground does favor at least some minor flooding potential.
Ensemble forecasts for the rivers show highest confidence for
flooding along the Dan River basin, but its still hanging onto
higher QPF. Will see how rainfall sets up and amounts overnight,
but suspect minor flooding along the Dan River seems likely by
Saturday afternoon/night.
The rest of the river basins should see rises by late tonight into
Saturday but none are expected to approach flood stages, as
highest rainfall looks to stay off the coast.
