Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will remain just south and east of the region overnight
and Monday. An area of low pressure is expected to develop along the
front and track northeastward off the Mid-Atlantic coast Monday
afternoon and night. High pressure will build in Tuesday night and
Wednesday. An area of low pressure over the Southern Plains will
eventually affect the region Thursday night and Friday. High
pressure returns for next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/...
The cold front that moved across the area has pushed farther
south. Our area will remain under the influence of southwest
flow aloft as a trough digs across the Mid-Mississippi Valley
overnight. There will be several short waves moving across the
area through the overnight, and with continued enhanced moisture
across southern New Jersey and Delmarva, there will continue to
be some light rain. The remainder of the area is expected to be
dry.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY/...
Mostly cloudy skies with a continued chance of showers, mainly
to the south and east of I-95 to start off the work week. Some
sun is possible across the Lehigh Valley and southern Poconos
during the morning, but it should cloud over for the afternoon.
High temperatures in the 40s, except for upper 30s across the
highest elevations.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A weak system/front moving across the area Monday night and
Tuesday will bring some light snows (mixed with ran S/E) for the
period. We haven't changed the totals much with this update,
with the earlier fcst looking mostly ok attm. Could be around an
inch across se PA and Delmarva while 1 to 2 inches could occur
over Berks county and maybe into wrn Chester county too. Low
temperatures Monday night will be in the 20s across the
north/west areas while low 30s will be common across Delmarva
and srn NJ. Highs Tuesday will be in the low 30s North and mid
30s near Philadelphia and Delmarva.

A few days of fair weather expected during the middle of the
upcoming week as High pressure builds over the region. Mostly dry
weather from Tuesday night through Wednesday night. Temperatures
will be cool, about 5 degrees below normal.

Another wet weather system is expected for Thursday and into Friday.
The ECMWF and CMC models both showing a decent batch of qpf across
the area with the CMC having the higher totals. The GFS has a more
disorganized look to the qpf and more progressive with the features.
It offers little in the way of qpf for that period. We only adjusted
pop grids a little with the high chance/low likely pops remaining
for the time being. Temperatures will be back above normal Thursday,
but then readings will fall back closer to early February norms by
Friday. If colder air arrives sooner it could be some snow for the
area, but many uncertainties remain. We will keep a watch on
this the next few days.

Next week end looks mostly dry at this point with more high pressure
slated to arrive. Temperatures look to be several degrees below
normal.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Overnight...VFR overall, however some lingering MVFR ceilings and/or
visibilities will occur at MIV and ACY with some light rain at times.
Northeast winds mainly around 5 knots.

Monday...VFR, with possibly the exception of lingering MVFR early at
ACY and MIV. MVFR ceilings however should start to develop later in
the afternoon mainly at ACY and MIV. It is possible that some light
rain occurs again this afternoon at ACY and MIV. Northeast winds
increase to near 10 knots, however 10-15 knots at MIV and especially
ACY with possible gusts up to 25 knots at ACY.

OUTLOOK...
Monday night thru Tuesday night...Lower conditions expected with
    rain and snow.

Wednesday thru Thursday...Mostly VFR.

Thursday night and Friday...Lower conditions expected with
    rain and snow.

.MARINE...
The Gale Watch has been changed to a Small Craft Advisory; the
earlier issued Small Craft Advisory remains unchanged. Northeast
winds will increase during Monday as low pressure tracks well east
of the area. While some low-end gale force gusts cannot be ruled out
especially south of Atlantic City, NJ, it looks marginal and could
be short in duration late this afternoon and early this evening.
Since confidence was not high regarding the gale potential, we opted
for a strong Small Craft Advisory. Seas will build quite a bit in
the strengthening northeast flow, and these may need to be increased
some more especially for the southern Atlantic coastal waters
through Monday evening.

OUTLOOK...
High end SCA or psbl low end Gale conditions Monday evening
diminishing. SCA conditions much of Tue thru Thu night. Rains
and snows Mon night thru Tue night.

Sub-SCA conditions Friday and into the weekend. Higher winds and
seas if a coastal storm develops.
Tonight...A Marine Weather Statement was issued for fog with
visibilities down to 1 NM at times, expiring at 00Z across the
northern waters, and 06Z across the southern waters (including
DE Bay). Otherwise, sub-SCA conditions.

Monday...Northeast winds increase to at least SCA level across
the Atlantic waters and lower DE Bay. Seas will increase as well
in 4-8 foot range over the Atlantic waters by late in the day.

Gale Watch remains up, as not enough confidence for a warning
at this point.

.HYDROLOGY...
The Flood Watch for Warren, Monroe and Northampton Counties was
cancelled.

There remains considerable river ice along four miles of the
Delaware River from the Smithfield Beach National Recreation Area
downstream to the confluence of Brodhead Creek. However, colder air
will settle in over the region. Temperatures will once again hover
near or below freezing for a few days, temporarily limiting ice
break up and minimizing the risk of ice jam flooding. This should
remain the case through Wednesday. By Thursday, a warm up could once
again increase the potential for ice break up. We will continue to
monitor this situation through the week.

The exact water levels reported by the Tocks Island gauge may
not be representative due to the ice present.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There is a potential for minor to moderate coastal flooding
with the Tuesday morning high tide. A strengthening northeast
