.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will be in control of the weather today. A
coastal storm will directly impact the area tonight into
Saturday, then weaken as it lifts north of the area Saturday
night into Sunday. Another low will pass near the area Monday,
followed by building high pressure Tuesday into Wednesday. A
cold front approaches the area on Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Forecast update this morning to cancel the frost advisory for
eastern Suffolk and Southern Westchester counties in NY.
Otherwise, surface high pressure continues to move overhead
this morning, then shifts offshore this afternoon. Meanwhile,
an upper trough digs into the Southeast and interacts with
Pacific energy along the Gulf Coast. This will strengthen an
area of low pressure over the Southeast as it treks northeast.
As a result, expect clouds to increase, lower and thicken as the
day progresses. High pressure will keep the area dry through
this time period. High temperatures will continue to average
below normal.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
The main story in the short term will be a coastal low moving
across the region tonight and Saturday.
The digging upper level trough over the eastern US allows the
low to move up the coast. As the low moves up the coast, it
will interact with the off shore high pressure system that
retreats to the north. As a result, expect a wind driven, heavy
rain event tonight (mainly after midnight) through Saturday
morning for most places. The heavy rain and strong winds will
likely continue into the afternoon across much of Long Island
and southern CT, with East-Northeast winds gusting to 45-50 mph
along the coast (with 50 to 60 mph possible across the twin
forks of LI late tonight into Sat morning). Rainfall amounts
are expected to generally average between 1-2 inches, with the
potential for locally higher amounts. The best chances for
higher amounts will be across the eastern sections of Long
Island and southeastern Connecticut. These areas will see more
in the way of elevated instability and steepening mid-level
lapse rates, allowing for isolated thunderstorms.
These stronger winds will also result in coastal flooding

The rain should start to taper off late Saturday late afternoon
into the evening as the low starts to lift north of the region.
Due to clouds, rain and increasing winds, temperatures tonight
likely remain fairly steady with lows ranging from the upper 30s
to upper 40s. A decent temperature gradient for Saturday will
mean highs will vary somewhat across the tri-state, as is
usually the case with coastal lows. Highs will range from the
upper 40s for northwest sections, to the upper 50s to near 60
for southeast areas such as the Twin Forks.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A fairly progressive, yet amplified pattern will continue into
next week as a series of amplifying longwave troughs traverse
the lower 48.
On the heels of departing low pressure Saturday night into
Sunday, there will be low chance of rain and/or drizzle due to
a deep-layered cyclonic flow and residual low-level moisture.
Moving forward global models are in good agreement with a fast-
moving low tracking across the Ohio Valley Sunday night and near
of just south of the area on Monday morning. This will result
in light to moderate rain developing after midnight Monday and
ending in the afternoon. There is the potential up to half inch
of rainfall.
High pressure then follows for Tuesday into Wednesday with
building heights aloft as the upper trough moves offshore. The
next upper trough then moves into the mid section of the country
sending a cold front toward the area on Thursday with a chance
of showers. There are signs of a southern branch frontal
frontal wave tracking into the Ohio Valley and then up into the
eastern Great Lakes/Western NY. Streams are not phased, but
something to watch for with subsequent runs.
Temperatures will at or just below normal through Tuesday, but
then warm up a bit through Thursday.

High pressure builds over the area this morning and drifts
offshore today. Strong Low pressure tracks up the coast towards
the region tonight.
VFR thru 00z Sat, then ceiling and visibility lower quickly to
MVFR or lower as rain, heavy at times, overspreads the region
from the S.
Light NW winds shift to the SE today. Winds then shift to the E
tonight and increase rapidly thru 6-12z. E to NE winds will gust
to 35 to 40 kt along coastal terminals. Isolated gusts of up to
45 kt possible, mainly between 12-15Z Saturday for the NYC
terminals as the low makes its closest approach before
weakening later Saturday.

Tranquil conditions today due to high pressure/weak pressure
gradient will change abruptly tonight. A coastal low moves
toward the waters tonight and over the waters on Saturday. As
this low interacts with high pressure to the north, winds will
steadily increase through tonight into Saturday morning.
A storm warning is now in effect for the ocean waters, and
easter LI sound into Peconic/Gardiners bays late tonight and
Saturday. Gale warning has been issued elsewhere. Seas are
expected to build to 8 to 13 ft on the ocean, and 5 to 8 ft are
possible over the eastern portion of the LI Sound. Winds should
start to diminish late Saturday afternoon and Saturday night as
weakening low pressure lifts north across New England. SCA seas
will gradually subside across the ocean waters Sunday, but there
could be enough of a W/SW flow to keep seas right around 5 ft
into Monday.
Following the passage of low pressure Monday afternoon, a gusty
NW flow develops Monday night into Tuesday with SCA conditions
likely on the ocean waters.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rainfall of 1-2 inches is likely late tonight into Saturday.
While locally higher amounts may be possible, especially for
eastern areas, hydrologic impact does not look significant.
Another rain event late Sunday into Monday could produce up to
half an inch of rainfall.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A coastal flood warning has been issued for Saturday Morning
into Afternoon. Coastal Flood Advisory for SE CT.
Gale to Storm force NE winds with the coastal storm late
tonight into Sat is signaling an increasing threat for 2 to 3
ft of surge and associated widespread moderate coastal flooding
(2 to 2 1/2 ft of inundation above ground level) during the
times of high tide Saturday morning into afternoon. There is a
low potential for locally major inundation (3 ft above ground
level) for the most vulnerable coastal locales of the Great
South Bay and Jamaica Bay. Any coastal flooding may be
exacerbated by moderate to heavy rain at the same time.
Water levels are expected to decrease for the Sat night and
Sunday high tidal cycles, but with weak wind forcing but still
incoming swell energy limiting tidal drainage there is
potential for additional minor flooding. The most susceptible
areas would be the southern bays, where locally moderate coastal
flooding is not out of the question.
