Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will be in control of the weather through Friday.
A coastal storm will directly impact the area Friday night into
Saturday, then weaken as it lifts north of the area Saturday night
into Sunday. Another low will pass near the area Monday, followed
by building high pressure Tuesday into Wednesday. A cold front
approaches the area on Thursday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Updated for current conditions. Overnight lows still are on
track and the frost advisory remains in effect. Winds will be
diminishing, as the surface high builds over the northeast.
However, high clouds were moving into the region and this may
inhibit temperatures from falling to the mid 30s and frost from
developing where the frost advisory is in effect.

The high shifts offshore on Friday. Meanwhile, an upper trough
digs into the Southeast and interacts with Pacific energy along
the Gulf Coast. This will strengthen an area of low pressure
over the Carolinas by day's end. As a result, expect increasing
clouds through the day, but models agree that rain will hold off
until after 6pm. High temperatures will continue to average
below normal.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
The main story in the short term will be a coastal low moving
across the region Friday night and Saturday.

A digging upper level trough over the eastern US will allowing
an area of low pressure to move up the coast. As the low moves
up the coast, it will interact with an area of high pressure
north of the area. As a result, expect a wind-driven, heavy rain
event Friday night (mainly after midnight) through Saturday
morning for most places. The heavy rain and strong winds will
likely continue into the afternoon across much of Long Island
and southern CT, with East-Northeast winds gusting to 45-50 mph
along the coast. Rainfall amounts are expected to generally
average between 1.5-2 inches, with the potential for locally
higher amounts. The best chances for higher amounts will be
across the eastern sections of Long Island and CT.

These stronger winds will also result in coastal flooding
issues...see tides/coastal flood section for further details.

Will continue to mention at least a chance of some thunder
across far eastern sections of Long Island and CT as enough
elevated instability moves into the area.

The rain should start to taper off late Saturday
afternoon/evening as the low starts to lift north of the region.

Low temperatures Friday night will fall into the low to mid 40s,
with highs on Saturday only reaching the upper 40s and 50s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A fairly progressive, yet amplified pattern will continue into
next week as a series of amplifying longwave troughs traverse
the lower 48.

On the heels of departing low pressure Saturday night into
Sunday, there will be low chance of rain and/or drizzle due to
a deep-layered cyclonic flow and residual low-level moisture.

Moving forward global models are in good agreement with a fast-
moving low tracking across the Ohio Valley Sunday night and near
of just south of the area on Monday morning. This will result
in light to moderate rain developing after midnight Monday and
ending in the afternoon. There is the potential up to half inch
of rainfall.

High pressure then follows for Tuesday into Wednesday with
building heights aloft as the upper trough moves offshore. The
next upper trough then moves into the mid section of the country
sending a cold front toward the area on Thursday with a chance
of showers. There are signs of a southern branch frontal
frontal wave tracking into the Ohio Valley and then up into the
eastern Great Lakes/Western NY. Streams are not phased, but
something to watch for with subsequent runs.

Temperatures will at or just below normal through Tuesday, but
then warm up a bit through Thursday.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...

to about 12-15z Sat. Isolated gusts to 45 kt possible.
.Saturday night...Rain with IFR conds possible. NE winds G20-
25KT mainly before midnight.
.Sunday-Monday...Chance of rain showers with MVFR conds possible at
times.
.Tuesday...VFR. NW winds G20kt.

.MARINE...
Updated wind gusts across the ocean waters. Across the waters
east of Moriches Inlet wind gusts have been near 25 kt at times.
However, with high pressure building into the waters overnight
the winds and gusts are expected to diminish.

The high eventually builds over the waters by Friday morning.
Expect tranquil conditions on the waters through Friday. A
coastal low then begins to take shape and moves towards the
water Friday night and over the waters on Saturday. As this low
interacts with high pressure to the north, winds will steadily
increase through Friday night into Saturday morning.

A storm watch issued for the ocean waters for Fri night into
Saturday, and a gale watch for the remainder of the waters. Seas
are expected to build to 8 to 13 ft on the ocean. Winds should
start to diminish late Saturday afternoon.

Winds will quickly subside Saturday night as weakening low
pressure lifts north across New England. SCA seas will
gradually subside across the ocean waters Sunday, but there
could be enough of a W/SW flow to keep seas right around 5 ft
into Monday.

Following the passage of low pressure Monday afternoon, a gusty
NW flow develops Monday night into Tuesday with SCA conditions
likely on the ocean waters.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rainfall of 1.5-2 inches is likely late Fri night into Saturday.
While locally higher amounts may be possible, hydrologic impact
does not look significant.

Another rain event late Sunday into Monday could produce up to
half an inch of rainfall.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A coastal flood watch has been issued for Saturday Morning into
Afternoon.

Gale to Storm force NE winds with the coastal storm late Fri
night into Sat is signaling an increasing threat for 2 to 3 ft
of surge and associated widespread moderate coastal flooding (2
to 2 1/2 ft of inundation above ground level) during the times
of high tide Saturday morning into afternoon. There is a low
potential for locally major inundation (3 ft above ground level)
for the most vulnerable coastal locales of the Great South Bay
and Jamaica Bay. Any coastal flooding may be exacerbated by
moderate to heavy rain at the same time.

Water levels are expected to decrease for the Sat night and
Sunday high tidal cycles, but with weak wind forcing but still
incoming swell energy limiting tidal drainage there is
potential for additional minor flooding. The most susceptible
areas would be the southern bays, where locally moderate coastal
flooding is not out of the question.
