.SYNOPSIS...Dry and mild weather is forecast to continue into
Monday. There may be patchy dense fog late Sunday night into
Monday morning. Light to moderate rain is forecast to spread into
the North Bay on Tuesday morning, with light rain likely to
develop across much of the rest of our area Tuesday afternoon and
evening. Most areas may see a break from rainfall Tuesday night
and Wednesday morning before a stronger storm system delivers
widespread moderate to locally heavy rain from late Wednesday into
Thursday. Rain chances continue from Friday into the weekend, but
forecast confidence is low in the extended period due to model
differences.

.DISCUSSION...As of 9:20 PM PST Sunday...Skies are mostly clear
across the forecast area this evening. Temperatures have already
cooled to the dewpoint in the North Bay Valleys and fog has
developed at the Sonoma County Airport. Expect patchy dense fog
to develop in the North Bay Valleys later tonight and this will
impact at least the early portion of the Monday morning commute.
In the East Bay Valleys, dewpoints are slightly lower compared to
24 hours ago, but it's possible that patchy fog will develop
there again late tonight, as well as around northern San Francisco
Bay.
Monday is expected to be a day much like today as a shortwave
ridge remains over California. Expect mostly sunny skies after
patchy dense morning fog clears, although there may be slightly
more high cloudiness compared to Sunday. Afternoon highs are
forecast to be similar to Sunday - mostly in the 60s and lower
70s. Winds will remain light.
An upper trough is centered over the Gulf of Alaska this evening,
with a frontal boundary extending from the British Columbia Coast
to the WSW well offshore. Flowing along the frontal boundary is a
narrow plume of very moist air (Atmospheric River or AR) with
precipitable water values in excess of 2 inches. Forecast
confidence is high that this incoming system and one close on its
heels will bring widespread precipitation to our area starting
Tuesday and continuing through Thursday. But the details of the
forecast are difficult to pin down given model differences and
variability. The initial frontal boundary is forecast to weaken by
the time it reaches our area on Tuesday and therefore it won't
take full advantage of the rich moisture supply with the AR.
Only light to moderate rain is expected to overspread the North
Bay on Tuesday morning, with the boundary forecast to weaken
further as it proceeds south of the Golden Gate Tuesday afternoon
and evening. The 00Z NAM forecasts no more than 0.70" of rain in
the North Bay on Tuesday, with generally less than a tenth of an
inch across the rest of our forecast area. The 00Z GFS maintains
the strength of this initial frontal boundary somewhat better and
forecasts between 0.25-0.75" of rain across areas from Monterey
northward on Tuesday.
After the initial boundary dissipates over the southern portion
of our area on Tuesday evening, there will likely be a lack of
precipitation for about 12 hours, although here too the models
don't agree all that well. A second impulse with good upper level
jet support is then forecast to approach from the west on
Wednesday. A surface low is forecast to deepen offshore Wednesday
and Wednesday evening. What the models appear to be struggling
with is just how this second impulse will interact with the
remnant moisture plume that will still be draped across central
California. The general idea is that precipitation will initially
redevelop across the southern portion of our area Wednesday and
then become more widespread and increase in intensity by Wednesday
evening and Wednesday night as the surface low and upper jet
approach and provide the necessary large-scale lift. A period of
heavy rain is likely as a cold front sweeps through late Wednesday
night and into early Thursday morning, and isolated thunderstorms
are possible then as well. It's likely the details will become
clearer as we draw closer to the event. Rain is expected to change
to showers by Thursday afternoon, and then showers will likely
taper off an end by Friday morning. Rain totals with the
Wednesday/Thursday system are expected to range from 0.5-1.5" at
lower elevations and from 2 to 3 inches in the hills.
Wind is not expected to be a factor through Wednesday. But
locally strong and gusty winds are certainly possible Wednesday
night and early Thursday as the surface low approaches Point
Arena.
In general, the models have been trending drier for next weekend,
but the 00Z GFS looks relatively wet for Saturday.

to stream across area terminals tonight and Monday. Patchy low
clouds and fog have already brought VLIFR cigs and vsbys to KSTS
and are anticipated to affect other Bay Area terminals overnight
into early Monday morning. Clearing is expected between 16z-18z
Monday. Generally light winds expected.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR conditions expected till around 15z.
Borderline IFR/MVFR cigs around 1000 feet anticipated. Clouds
