.SYNOPSIS...Dry and mild weather is forecast to continue today.
Patchy dense fog is possible through mid morning, mainly in the
North Bay Valleys. A frontal boundary will spread light to
moderate rain across the North Bay on Tuesday morning. Rainfall
will taper off south of the Golden Gate on Tuesday afternoon and
evening as the frontal boundary dissipates. Moist westerly flow
will maintain rain chances Tuesday night and Wednesday. A stronger
storm system will then likely bring widespread moderate to
locally heavy rain to our entire region from Wednesday night into
Thursday morning, along with strong and gusty winds. Showers will
follow Thursday afternoon and evening. Friday may be a dry day
before rain chances return over the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:05 AM PST Monday...The ongoing forecast
remains on track in the short-term. Increased mid/high level cloud
cover will continue to advect inland from the northwest today with
temperatures generally in the 60s across the San Francisco Bay
Area and along the coast with lower 70s for interior portions of
the Central Coast. Please see the previous forecast discussion
below for additional details on the incoming system(s) set to
bring widespread rainfall and breezy to locally gusty winds to the
region Tuesday into midweek.

.PREV DISCUSSION...As of 3:25 AM PST Monday...Skies remain mostly
clear early this morning although satellite and surface
observations indicate patchy fog in the North Bay. Surface
dewpoints in the North and East Bay are currently 3 to 8 degrees
lower compared to 24 hours ago. Thus, fog this morning is not
expected to be as widespread as yesterday morning. Even so, patchy
dense fog is possible in the North and East Bay Valleys and
around the northern San Francisco Bay until a few hours after
sunrise.

Dry and mild weather conditions will continue across our region
today as an upper ridge remains over California for one more day.
High temperatures this afternoon are expected to be similar to
yesterday - mostly in the 60s across the northern and central SF
Bay Area, and mid 60s to lower 70s from Santa Cruz and Santa Clara
Counties southward.

Early morning satellite shows a frontal system beginning to push
into the Pacific Northwest. A plume of moist air flowing along the
frontal boundary contains precipitable water values as high as
1.7 inches. This system is forecast to sag slowly southward and
into northern California over the next 36 hours, bringing rain to
much of our forecast area tomorrow and tomorrow evening. Although
the moisture plume will advance southward along with the frontal
boundary on Tuesday, the system will weaken as it moves south
through our area and thus not take full advantage of rainfall
potential. Light to moderate rain rates are expected in the North
Bay on Tuesday morning, but rainfall is then expected to taper off
south of the Golden Gate on Tuesday afternoon and evening as the
front dissipates. Rainfall totals with this first system on
Tuesday and Tuesday night are forecast to range from 0.5-1.0" in
the North Bay, 0.10-0.50" for the rest of the SF Bay Area and
Santa Cruz County (except locally more in the Santa Cruz
Mountains) and a third of an inch or less for Monterey and San
Benito Counties. Winds are not expected to be much of a factor
with this first system with local gusts of around 30 mph at most
in the North Bay on Tuesday.

After the initial frontal boundary dissipates over the southern
portion of our area on Tuesday night, a moist westerly flow will
continue across our area. However, due to lack of forcing,
rainfall will likely be spotty and mostly light from Tuesday night
through much of Wednesday. However, the GFS shows some higher
intensity precipitation across the far southern portion of our
area on Wednesday morning, possibly associated with an upper jet
max.

The models are coming into relatively good agreement concerning
the time period for heaviest rain and strongest winds this week.
An upper trough is forecast to approach the California coast from
the west by late Wednesday and interact with the moisture plume
that will still be present over central California. Upper jet
dynamics and a deepening surface low associated with this trough
will provide the necessary lift and low level convergence to
generate widespread moderate to locally heavy rain across our area
on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The models disagree
somewhat on where the most intense precipitation will be during
this time period, with the NAM and ECMWF focusing the heaviest
rain across the southern portion of our area, while the GFS places
the most intense rain across the northern portion. The upshot is
that our entire forecast area should be prepared for potential
heavy rain rates on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. In
addition, a surface low is forecast to deepen to about 994 mb off
the northern California coast by late Wednesday night. This will
result in locally strong and gusty southerly winds across our
forecast area on Wednesday night, switching to westerly and
remaining gusty after frontal passage on Thursday. Wind advisories
may be needed Wednesday night through at least midday Thursday.
Finally, this system may be vigorous enough to generate
thunderstorms, especially along the cold frontal boundary late
Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Have not yet added
thunderstorm chances to the forecast and will wait until the
timing is a bit more certain. Showers will continue through
Thursday afternoon and evening. The models agree that most shower
activity will end by late Thursday night. Rainfall totals with
this second system from late Wednesday through late Thursday are
forecast to range from 1 to 2 inches at lower elevations and from
2 to 4 inches in the hills (with locally higher amounts certainly
possible).

Friday currently looks like a dry day before the next system
is forecast to swoop in from the northwest and bring another round
of precipitation to our area from late Friday night through
Saturday.

.AVIATION...As of 9:34 AM PST Monday...for 18Z TAFs. Visible
satellite imagery shows plenty of high clouds streaming over
northern California, and will continue to spread south and east
through the day. VFR conditions are forecast to prevail at the TAF
sites during the day with the BKN to OVC decks around 15,000 to
20,000 ft AGL. Started to introduce the next chance of rain to the
STS, SFO, and OAK TAFs as the next system is forecast to begin
impacting the area on Tuesday.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR conditions are forecast to prevail today
with passing BKN to OVC high clouds. Light winds this morning will
become west to northwest in the afternoon, generally around 5 to
10 kt.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR conditions are expected to prevail
through the day. Chance of low clouds return to SNS and MRY
overnight, but confidence remains low.

.MARINE...as of 9:05 AM PST Monday...Light northerly winds this
morning will become southerly over the next 12 hours ahead of the
next approaching storm system. Expect the southerly winds to
increase tomorrow as a warm front approaches from the west. Mixed
moderate northwest and light southerly swell will continue today
before a much larger westerly swell arrives by midweek.

and Monterey Bay Area.

.DAY ONE...Monday and Monday night

Patchy dense fog is possible through mid morning Monday,
especially in the North Bay Valleys. Otherwise, expect continued
dry and mild weather.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

An active weather pattern will redevelop by Tuesday as a weather
system spreads light to moderate rain across much of the region.
Periods of rain will then likely continue Tuesday night and into
Wednesday.

A second, stronger, system is then forecast to impact the region
on Wednesday night and Thursday. Hazards associated with this
second system include:

* Widespread moderate to heavy rain, especially Wednesday night
  and Thursday morning. Heavy rain rates may result in temporary
  local flooding of low lying areas and ponding on roadways.
  Mudslides are possible along Highway 1 in Big Sur.

* Strong and gusty winds. Southerly winds will increase late
  Wednesday and be locally strong and gusty Wednesday night.
  Winds will then shift to the west on Thursday and remain gusty.
  Wind advisories may be needed for Wednesday night and Thursday,
  especially in coastal and higher elevation locations.

* There is also a potential for isolated thunderstorms Wednesday
  night and Thursday morning.

In addition, storms this week will generate high surf. High surf
will arrive along the coast beginning on Tuesday and continue
through Thursday. High surf advisories are likely.
