.SYNOPSIS...
A long lasting and significant coastal storm is expected to
impact the region this weekend and into early next week. High
pressure will build over the area Tuesday night through
Thursday. Another strong storm system may affect the region the
end of next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...
As of 730 PM Fri...Forecast in good shape and only made minor
tweaks to the T/Td to capture trends for the evening update.
Strong high pressure over the Midwest will continue ridging
into the region at the sfc. WAA aloft steadily increases through
the overnight, though will be confined above 700MB. Thus only
an inc in mid and esp high clouds expected. Some light radar
returns are possible towards dawn, but most likely will only be
in the form of virga as the high will be quite stubborn and no
rain expected to reach the ground. Lows will be in the low/mid
30s most areas, with mid/upr 30s near the beaches.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
As of 3 PM Fri...Moisture from the impending coastal storm will
reach NC by morning, but latest model suite continues to keep
bndry layer from saturating through the morning. As the day
wears on however, enough precip will be falling to overcome dry
lower levels, and think that good cvg of rain should develop
under axis of WAA aloft. The gradient between rain and no rain
will be rather tight, so pop forecast is tough at this time.
Right now, have high chc to likely pops residing across the far
srn zones, tapering down to no pops for the northern tier. QPF
should be light where rain falls, and generally no higher than a
tenth to two tenths of an inch. With the rain, clouds, and NE
flow, high temps will be held down in the 40s region wide.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 2 PM Friday...A strong coastal low will bring active
weather to the region through Monday. Another strong storm will
impact the area by the end of next week.
Saturday Night through Monday...Strengthening coastal low will
bring a variety of impacts to the area through the latter half
of the weekend into Monday. Model agreement is decent with
regards to placement, strength and movement of the low, but
differences persist in amounts/type of precipitation, which is
to be expected in this type of dynamic system. For our CWA, top
concerns will be heavy rainfall with model QPF consistently
showing 1-3 inches, strong gusty ENE/NE winds producing elevated
water levels and minor coastal flooding, and a winter weather
threat over our far W/NW counties.
Thermal profiles continue to favor a period of mixed
precipitation late Saturday night/early Sunday morning, changing
to all snow through late morning Sunday before warmer air
changes all precipitation to rain by early Sunday afternoon. A
quick burst of an inch of snow is quite possible over our NW CWA
including Martin, Pitt and Greene Counties. Widespread rain will
then continue across the area Sunday night through Monday. As a
strong upper-level dives south across the region later on
Monday, another period of a rain/snow mix is still possible, but
surface temperatures should warm sufficiently to prevent any
issues with accumulations.
Gusty winds will likely necessitate Wind Advisories in the next
forecast cycle, especially on the Outer Banks. See Coastal
Flood/Tides section for more information on the water level
rise/coastal flooding issues Sunday into Monday.
Tuesday through Thursday...High pressure will ridge down the
eastern slopes of the Appalachians through mid-week with
generally dry and seasonably cool conditions. Deeper moisture
starts to return by late Thursday ahead of next developing storm
system in the low Mississippi Valley.
Friday...Another potent storm system will impact the area by
Friday as strong low pressure moves up through the Ohio Valley
with very gusty S/SE winds developing. This system has the
potential to produce some very heavy rainfall across our CWA,
along with a favorable setup for severe weather. After a chilly
week, the gusty S/SE winds will push high temperatures back into
the 60s ahead of the front on Friday.

.AVIATION /01Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Short term /Through Saturday morning/...
As of 7 PM Fri...Mainly VFR conditions expected through much of
the TAF cycle. Increase in mid and high clouds will be the rule
through the overnight. Clouds continue to lower through the day
Saturday, especially south of highway 70 with light rain
spreading across this area during the late morning and afternoon
hours. Cannot rule out periods of MVFR conditions across far
southern sections during the afternoon as well, with OAJ most
likely to be impacted. Winds will be light northeasterly
through the period.
Long Term /Saturday night through Wednesday/...
As of 2 PM Friday...Widespread sub-VFR conditions are expected
with rain, with possible wintry/mix snow for the KISO and KPGV
TAF sites late Saturday night into midday Sunday. Rain will
continue into Monday, coupled with gusty NE winds. VFR
conditions should return by Monday night through Wednesday under
the influence of high pressure to the northeast.

Short term /Through Saturday/...
As of 3 PM Fri...NE winds will be slowly increasing through the
day tomorrow, and will generally be 5-15 kt tonight, then inc
10-20 kt during the day Sat. Some 25 kt winds will develop on
the ctrl/srn waters late Sat afternoon. Seas will respond by
steadily building through the day, and reach heights as high as
4-5 ft by late in the day Sat.
Saturday night through Wednesday...
As of 2 PM Friday...Have upgraded the Gale Watch to a Gale
Warning over the southern two legs from Ocracoke southward as NE
winds 25-35 knots with gusts in excess of 40 knots are likely
during Saturday night, in the third period of the forecast. Gale
Watches remain in effect for the remainder of the coastal waters
as strengthening coastal low leads to continued gusty winds into
Monday. Winds drop below Gale Force, they will remain gusty with seas
will remain elevated through Wednesday morning, before finally
dropping as high pressure ridges down the eastern slopes of the
Appalachians.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 3 PM Fri...An area of low pressure is forecast to
strengthen and lift off the NC coast Sunday night into early
next week. A prolonged period of strong winds are expected to
develop Sunday and continue through Monday night. Based on the
current forecast track and duration of strong winds, coastal
flooding, rough surf and beach erosion will be likely. Minor to
moderate coastal flooding, with water level rises 2-3 ft above
ground (3-4 ft above normal) possible. Strong ENE winds begin
Sunday, so areas adjacent to the western end of the Pamlico
Sound (in Carteret, Craven, Pamlico, Beaufort, Mainland Hyde
counties) could see inundation. This could also cause problems
along coastal Onslow county, in and around the New River, with
minor water level rises possible. Winds become more NNE Sunday
night and Monday, with threat expanding to include the oceanside
of the Outer Banks (mainly north of Cape Hatteras) and
soundside Outer Banks, including Hatteras Village and Ocracoke.
The greatest threat for beach erosion, rough surf, and localized
ocean overwash will be for the beaches north of Cape Lookout.
Due to the prolonged period of strong winds and wave run up, the
coastal flood threat is likely to persist for a few days for
many coastal locations. A secondary low will develop offshore of
the Carolinas later Monday into early Tuesday, and may keep gale
force winds and coastal flooding issues in play into Tuesday.
Thereafter, conditions should improve into mid week.
