High pressure will extend over the area from offshore into Sunday
with a cold front slowly approaching from the west. The front
will move through Sunday night with some strong to potentially severe
thunderstorms. High pressure will build over the area Monday through
Wednesday, then another front will move through Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1255 AM Sunday...Clouds continue to increase from the west
and precipitable water values will slowly come up overnight.
Cannot rule out a few brief showers toward morning especially
near the coast per the latest HRRR model. Tweaking temperatures
down just a degree or two based on current readings, but most
areas should be in the lower to mid 60s for lows tonight.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY/...
As of 330 PM Saturday...Models remain in good agreement with
southerly flow and some increase in short wave energy producing
scattered showers and isolated tstms across area, with slightly
better coverage indicated during morning into early afternoon.
Some heavier showers and storms may produce gusty winds but main
severe threat will accompany activity with front Sunday night.
Enough insolation expected to support max temps from 70s coast
to lower 80s inland.

indicates Slight Risk of severe for entire CWA for Sunday night.

/Previous discussion/

As of 4 AM Sat...
Sunday...A cold front associated with a deep upr trf will
approach the region on Sunday and cross late Sunday night. This
system will have strong dynamics with it and produce a threat
for severe storms Sunday night. During the day Sunday,
moistening southerly flow ahead of the front will pump rich
moisture into the region with TD's climbing through the 60s.
Scattered showers are expected across E NC, especially during
the morning hours, before increasing heights/thicknesses ahead
of the front bring a period of mainly dry before the convection
arrives Sunday night. It will be a breezy, warm and muggy day
with highs reaching to the low 80s once again inland, despite
the mostly cloudy skies. Winds will gust 20-30 mph especially
during the afternoon hours.

Period of concern will be Sunday night, as strongly forced cold
front advances into E NC. Very good dynamics in place with
negatively tilted upr trough swinging through the Carolinas
providing diffluence aloft. Shear profiles are impressive with
deep layer shear on order of 50+ knots and low lvl shear 40+
kt. Model soundings indicate long skinny CAPE profiles
suggesting hail threat is low, but wind threat will be enhanced
given 60+ kt in the 850-950MB layer. Sfc based CAPES between
500-800 J/KG would indicate a classic high shear/low CAPE
scenario. Some of the mesoscale models including the NAM/GEM_Reg
indicate weak sfc cyclogenesis across the Piedmont of NC. This
would back sfc flow to SSE across E NC, and introduce a tornado
threat. Hodographs indicate storm mode as a QLCS with embedded
isolated tornados, and MESO NAM (NAM 3KM) latching onto this
idea with an intense squall line racing through E NC between
10pm and 5am. At the least, strong to locally severe wind gusts
can be expected with this line due to heavy precip loading
(PWATS around 1.8 inches and at the climo max for mid April)

Monday...Precip quickly races offshore with dramatic drying
behind the front as upr trough pushes through. Strato cu will
develop in wake of front as steep lapse rates in place with cold
air aloft. May be some isolated sprinkles or showers Monday
afternoon, but will leave out of fcst attm as moisture will be
quite shallow. Temps quite a bit cooler with readings in the 60s
for highs and gusty WSW winds 20-30 mph making it feel a bit on
the brisk side. Monday night, temps are chilly with lows
dropping into the upr 30s interior to mid 40s coast.

Tue thru Thu...High pres will build S of the area Tue then
slide offshore Wed. Temps begin to moderate to near climo on Tue
with highs around 70 sw to the low 60s nrn OBX.
Heights/thicknesses build on Wed with zonal flow and temps will
reach into the 80s inland to 70s coast. Temps Wed night will be
mild with the SW flow and readings in the upr 40s to mid 50s.
Thursday should be another warm day with readings around 80
inland to 70s coast. The latest 14/00Z ECMWF however indicates a
cold front sinking into E NC on Wed and would indicate cooler
temps, especially northeast zones, with winds off the cool
waters.

Friday...Mainly dry shortwave and front pass through by Friday
with cooler air mass building in and highs around 70 inland to
low 60s OBX.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Short Term /through 06Z Monday...
As of 1255 AM Sunday...VFR ceilings currently will drop to MVFR
toward morning as deep moisture continues to advect into eastern
NC. A few isolated showers will be possible, especially near the
coast toward morning. Expect 1000-2000 foot ceilings after
about 09z, with MVFR conditions likely for most of the day
Sunday as showers become more widespread. S/SW winds will gust
up to 25 knots at times Sunday, and a few brief severe winds
gusts may be possible in intense line of storms moving through
just before 06Z tonight.

Long Term /Sunday night through Tuesday/...
As of 4 AM Sat...Widespread shra with thunderstorms and locally
heavy rain and gusty winds as cold front crosses during the
night on Sunday night. Expect significant periods of sub VFR Sun
night as well as strong to severe wind gusts with passage of
the line of thunderstorms. Return to VFR on Monday as front
races off the coast by sunrise. Winds gusty south on Sunday in
the 20-30 kt range, and 20-25 kt out of the WSW on Monday behind
the front. Dry on Tuesday with light winds.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for eastern North Carolina.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

   Moderate Rip Current Risk.

A line of strong to locally severe thunderstorms is expected to move
through Eastern North Carolina Sunday night. The main threats with
the storms will be damaging winds and brief very heavy downpours
with localized flooding, but an isolated tornado may also occur
within the line of thunderstorms.

In addition, strong gradient winds ahead of the front could bring
wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph for the Outer Banks and downeast Carteret
County Sunday night.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

No significant weather is expected at this time.
