overnight coastal marine layer Saturday into Sunday. Then a low will
meander around the region from late Monday into Thursday for cooler
temperatures, possible precipitation an a coastal marine layer. At
the weeks end, the low should shift south, and a high may approach
for a warming trend.

slowly shift south toward San Clemente Island overnight.
Southeast flow will continue nearshore, keeping a low cloud deck
socked into the So Cal bight. Ceilings are around 700 to 800 feet
over coastal L.A. and Ventura Counties, but patchy dense fog is
affecting the Santa Barbara South Coast with 1/4 mile visibilities
reported at the airport in Goleta. Heights aloft are expected to
lower as an upper trough over the Pacific Northwest pushes
southward over the Great Basin. This should allow the marine layer
to deepen overnight, and the South Coast fog should begin to lift
into a stratus layer by late this evening.

Over LA and Ventura Counties, low clouds are expected to push
inland into the coastal valleys overnight as the marine layer
deepens, especially the San Gabriel Valley, and to a lesser
extent the eastern San Fernando Valley. Patchy low clouds and fog
will likely just affect the margins of the Ventura Valleys late
tonight into early Saturday.

.SHORT TERM (FRI-MON)...09/730 PM.

Highs Saturday are expected to cool, especially inland which will
feel more of a marine influence than it did today. Low clouds
expected to linger at least near the beaches through the afternoon
and possibly a few miles inland as well.

The rest of the forecast through Monday is more or less on track.
We quickly shift to a Santa Ana pattern Sat night into Sunday
following the passage of the trough through the Great Basin.
Models still favoring a solid advisory level wind event in Ventura
and LA Counties with possibly some gusts to around 60 mph in the
usual favored spots. Temps will warm up but not too much as
there's a decent amount of cold air advection with this event.

The daily back and forth continues Sunday night into Monday as we
again shift quickly back to a strong onshore/deep marine layer
pattern due to another upper low dropping south and moving over
the Central Coast by Monday night. Extensive marine layer
deepening and lift in the boundary layer will likely lead to at
least some drizzle and possibly even some measurable light rain
for coast/valley/foothill areas south of Pt Conception. Then as
the air mass continues to moisten up through the day and into
Monday night shower chances will spread to all areas. Amounts
expected to be pretty light, generally a quarter inch or less in
most areas through Monday night. Snow levels will fall to around
5000 feet so there could be a few inches of snow at higher
elevations.

.LONG TERM (TUE-FRI)...09/146 PM.

Moist south to southeast flow continues Tuesday while the upper
low retrogrades further off the coast. Tuesday and Tuesday night
look like our best chance for widespread shower activity before
the upper low moves several hundred miles to the southwest on
Wednesday. Still can't rule out showers Wednesday as there's at
least some moisture around but not as much and the low level flow
isn't as favorable as it's more from the east. Again amounts look
pretty light, mostly a quarter to half inch with minimal (though
not zero) threat of excessive rainfall rates. The concern would be
for potential thunderstorms with the upper low and cold air aloft
destabilizing the air mass.

At this point the models diverge like they did yesterday with the
GFS ejecting the low east into nrn Baja Thu and basically
shutting off the moisture feed and creating a weak offshore flow
situation. The ECMWF spins the low just off the coast and keeps So
Cal in a moist pattern through Friday so still some uncertainty
with how long our precip chances will linger.

.AVIATION...10/0631Z.

At 0600Z over KLAX, the marine layer was around 1200 feet deep
with an inversion top at 2100 feet and a temperature of 21
degrees Celsius.

High confidence in VFR TAFs for Central Coast sites and KPRB, and
the desert sites of LA County...low confidence elsewhere. Marine
layer cigs will persist for much of the period, but timing is low
confidence. Flight categories are low certainty and may fluctuate
during the period. In general, LIFR to VLIFR conds expected for
KSBA, with IFR to MVFR for sites further south. Coastal sites
south of Pt Conception may not see good clearing Sat afternoon.
KLAX...Low confidence in the 06z taf. IFR cigs should rise to
MVFR by 15z, but timing may differ 2 hrs or more from taf time.
East winds likely through 18z but should stay below 8 KT. 20%
chance that cigs will scatter out Sat between 22z-03z.

KBUR...Low confidence in 06z taf. Conds expected to deteriorate to
LIFR by 13z but timing is low certainty. 40 percent chance of
VLIFR conds developing overnight. Timing of cigs clearing may
differ up to 2 hrs from taf time of 20z.

.MARINE...09/728 PM.

There is an 80% chance of Small Craft Advisory (SCA) NW winds off
the Central Coast by tonight, 100% chance by Saturday and
expanding to the immediate coast. There is also a 30% chance of
Gale Force winds beyond 30 miles from Morro Bay on Saturday.
Northeast winds will quickly form Saturday night through Sunday,
likely affecting inner waters south of Ventura. There is a 70%
chance of SCA conditions but likely only for about 6 hours, with
a 30% chance of these winds impacting Avalon Harbor.

Fog will impact coastal areas again tonight, with the lowest
visibility between Point Conception to Point Mugu.

.FIRE WEATHER...09/307 PM.

High pressure will build over the Great Basin and central Rockies
bringing a cool and very dry air mass across southwest California
this weekend. On Saturday fire weather conditions will actually be
a little better than today with an increase in humidities by 5-10
percent and a slight reduction in afternoon temperatures. However,
by Saturday night conditions will rapidly deteriorate as colder
air piles up across the northern side of the mountains and surface
pressure gradients turn offshore by -8 mb between LAX- Daggett.
Alignment of northeast winds to ridgetop level will generate a
moderate to strong Santa Ana with gusts up to 60 mph in the Los
Angeles and Ventura County Mountains and gusts to 45 mph in many
valleys. Humidities will likely drop into the 15-25 percent range
by Sunday morning and continue to lower to the single digits
during the day. The most critical times of the Santa Ana will
range from about midnight Saturday night until noon on Sunday.
Winds will then taper off Sunday afternoon, but humidities will be
slow to recover through Sunday night.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10pm Saturday through 6pm
Sunday for this Santa Ana in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
Even though this is short-duration event, it will be intense with
the potential for rapid fire growth if ignition occurs. Fuel
moisture values remain critical and no rain has occurred since
January 9th making this a highly unusual February scenario.
