.SYNOPSIS...10/415 AM.
A cooling trend will continue today as a weak weather system
moves over the area. A brief Santa Ana weather pattern will
develop late tonight and bring warmer temperatures and gusty winds
to the region through Sunday. A stronger and colder trough of low
pressure will dig into the region for much of next week. A cool,
showery and unsettled weather pattern should be expected.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-MON)...10/929 AM.
Marine layer deepened to 2500 ft at KLAX this morning, and with a
broad eddy circulation over the SoCal Bight, low clouds have pushed
into all the vlys S of the mtns over VTU/L.A. Counties including the
Santa Clarita Vly. There was also some patchy drizzle noted early
this morning across the area. N of Point Conception, there were some
low clouds noted along parts of the Central Coast into the western
Santa Ynez Vly. Elsewhere, fair skies with some hi clouds were
noted. The low clouds S of Point Conception should be stubborn to
dissipate today especially closer to the coast. Otherwise, fair
skies will prevail thru the afternoon across the forecast area with
some more hi clouds expected to move in. Temps will be several
degrees above normal over SLO/SBA Counties and across the mtns and
deserts, while the coast and vlys S of Point Conception should be a
few degrees cooler than normal. The warmest inland coastal areas and
vlys over SLO/SBA Counties should reach the 70s to near 80 this
afternoon, while highs mostly in the 60s to near 70 are expected for
the coast and vlys of VTU/L.A. Counties. Gusty NW winds will also
affect the higher mtns and Antelope Vlys today, with advisory level
gusts possible.
An upper level trof over the nrn Great basin today will slide S thru
tonight well E of the forecast area. This upper trof will help to
strengthen offshore gradients over srn CA tonight into Sun
morning. The 12Z NAM was predicting the LAX-DAG gradient to lower
to -6.7 mb at 12Z Sun morning. This along with good cold air
advection and support aloft (NE winds up to 55 kt at H850) will
drive strong and gusty winds to lower elevations including the
vlys and portions of the coast over VTU/L.A. Counties later this
evening thru Sun morning. The NAM was also indicating H950 winds
to top out around 45 kt early Sun morning over sern VTU County. It
looks like wind gusts up to 60 to 65 mph will be possible in the
higher mtns of VTU/L.A. Counties, up to 60 mph in the Santa Monica
Mtns, and 45 to 50 mph for the VTU County coast, sern VTU County
vlys and foothills, Santa Clarita Vly, western San Fernando Vly,
and the L.A. County coast from Malibu to the Hollywood Hills. A
High Wind Watch is already in effect for the mtns of VTU/L.A.
Counties tonight and Sun morning, which will likely be upgraded to
a High Wind Warning with this aftenroon's zone package, and wind
advisories will likely be issued with the afternoon zones for the
wind prone vlys and coastal areas of VTU/L.A. Counties. The winds
are forecast to increase dramatically this evening and diminish
rapidly late Sun morning.
The strong offshore flow will help to clear away the marine layer
low clouds and fog tonight into Sun morning except some low clouds
may linger along the Central Coast in the morning. Temps are
expected to turn warmer for the coast and vlys of VTU Counties, with
highs reaching the mid to upper 70s. Temps should cool some for
SLO/SBA Counties on Sun but still be a few degrees above normal. The
mtns and deserts of VTU/L.A. Counties will cool to near seasonal
norms for Sun.
A broad upper trof is expected to move into the Pac NW and nrn CA
late Sun and Sun night, then move into central CA for Mon. This
system will bring increasingly moist onshore flow to the forecast
area with increasing amounts of lower level clouds during the
period, and a slight chance to chance of rain and mountain snow
should develop mainly for srn half of L.A. County and mtns of VTU
County by Mon afternoon. The increasing clouds and onshore flow
will bring dramatic cooling to several degrees below normal in all
areas. Highs in the vlys and coastal areas should only be in the
upper 50s to low 60s for Mon afternoon.

.LONG TERM (TUE-FRI)...10/414 AM.
Model solutions remain in good agreement for the start of cooler
and unsettled weather pattern for early next week. An elongating
trough of low pressure located just south of the Aleutian Islands
near 48N and 156W this morning will move northeast over the Gulf
of Alaska today, undercut high-amplitude ridging over the
Northeastern Pacific Ocean tonight, phase with a piece of the
Hudson Bay Low, then drop south into the CONUS Sunday. The
troughs will then merge and consolidate into a larger trough over
the Pacific Northwest Sunday and Sunday night and dig south to
near Point Conception by late Tuesday morning. The trough will
likely bottom out near 30N and 125W on Wednesday, or about 350-400
miles southwest of Los Angeles.
Though moisture starved due to its continental origin, the trough
will start to pickup moisture from the Pacific Ocean as it clears
Point Conception. A cool and unsettled weather pattern with
possible showers at times looks likely for next week. Model
solutions suggest showers becoming likely south of Point
Conception between late Monday night and Wednesday. Showers cannot
ruled out north of Point Conception, though the flow pattern is
not as favorable. Snow levels could drop to between 3500 and 4500
feet. 700 mb temperatures in the model solutions are progged to
drop to between -8 and -10 degrees Celsius. With the cold air
mass aloft, isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out with this
storm system and it continues to bear watching. There is still a
range of possibilities in play including a 'wet' Santa Ana, or the
potential for upslope precipitation along the interior slopes of
the mountains. Snow is also a possibility for the Antelope
Valley. Rainfall amounts remain around a quarter to a half inch,
with local amounts up to one inch. The highest amounts look to
fall south of Point Conception.
The trough will get cut-off from the flow and likely plague the
region into late next week. This trough is likely to give weather
forecasters a hard time. GFS and ECMWF solutions diverge wildly
after Wednesday as GFS solutions are more progressive with the
feature, while ECMWF solutions are slower. With a majority of GEFS
members suggesting a slower solution relative to the operational
solutions, the forecast trends more toward the ECMWF solution. As
I learned in my studies, a cut-off low is the weatherman's woe.
This is likely to be the case.

At 1730z at KLAX... the marine layer was about 1900 feet deep.
The top of the inversion was around 4500 feet with a temperature
of about 16 degrees Celsius.
Overall... Moderate confidence in the current TAFs for the
coastal sites south of Point Conception as well as KBUR and KVNY.
High confidence in the other current TAFs. IFR/MVFR conditions
will improve by 21z for coastal sites south of Point Conception
as well as KBUR and KVNY though CIGs will likely linger MVFR until
late tonight. Otherwise and elsewhere VFR conditions will
prevail. Gusty northwesterly winds will develop through the day
across the region then shift to northeasterly by the end of the
forecast period.
KLAX... Moderate confidence in the current TAF. IFR/MVFR
conditions will improve by 20z though CIGs will likely linger MVFR
until late tonight. Otherwise VFR conditions will prevail. Breezy
northwesterly winds will develop through the day then shift to
northeasterly by the end of the forecast period. East winds
greater than 7 knots are not expected during the forecast period.
KBUR... Moderate confidence in the current TAF. IFR/MVFR
conditions will improve by 20z though CIGs will likely linger MVFR
until late tonight. Otherwise VFR conditions will prevail. Breezy
northwesterly winds will develop through the day then shift to
northeasterly by the end of the forecast period.
