Gusty north winds will develop across the region, strongest across the Santa Barbara county south coast and mountains, as well as the Interstate 5 corridor. These northerly winds combined with hot temperatures, very low humidities, and very dry fuels will bring critical Red Flag conditions to those areas through Tuesday. Any new fire ignitions will have the potential for very rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior. The remainder of Southwest California will see elevated fire danger through much of the week due to the prolonged period of hot and dry conditions. .SYNOPSIS...05/723 AM.
Above normal temperatures will continue across Southern
California, and the heat wave is expected this week with Tuesday
being the hottest day. Sundowner winds for the Santa Barbara South
Coast, Ventura and Los Angeles County mountains are likely tonight
and Tuesday night. Night through morning low clouds will continue
along the coastal areas through early next week.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-TUE)...05/820 AM.
***UPDATE***
Overall, forecast for the immediate short term is working out very
well. Latest sounding data indicates marine inversion very shallow
along the Central Coast (less than 500 feet deep), but deeper
south of Point Conception (around 1000 feet deep). Based on
surface observations and marine inversion depth, some patchy dense
fog could impact the immediate coastal areas over the next couple
of hours. However by late morning, expect the stratus/fog to
dissipate with sunny skies for all areas this afternoon. As for
temperatures today, expect readings to be very similar to Saturday
with some areas a couple degrees warmer and other areas a couple
degrees cooler.
Based on current conditions, no updates are planned at this time.
***From Previous Discussion***
Current marine layer is about 700 feet deep. There is a weak push
to the east and there is very weak offshore flow from the north.
There is no eddy and while low clouds cover the inner waters from
San Diego to Pt Mugu there is little intrusion on to the land.
There will likely a little more inland intrusion between now and
dawn but it looks like there will be less low clouds there was
ydy. Skies are clear north of Pt Conception due to weak offshore
flow. It is likely that some low clouds and patchy dense fog will
form in the Santa Maria area by radiative processes. Otherwise
today will be much like ydy...maybe a degree or two warmer across
the coastal areas due to less marine air.
The offshore flow from the north will increase tonight and this
and the above normal sea sfc temps will prevent any low clouds
from forming anywhere. An advisory level Sundowner is likely
tonight, with both SBA-SMX and SBA-BFL gradients expected to peak
at about -4 MB. Wind gusts between 35 and 45 mph are likely esp
west of Goleta. These sundowner winds will keep temperatures over
many foothill locations in the 80s for most of the night. There
will also be gusty winds through the I-5 corridor but these winds
will be just below advisory levels.
On Monday a 595 DM high will sit over AZ and 594 DM hgts will be
atop of Srn CA. More importantly the KBFL grad will be 3.6 MB
offshore at 12Z and if the NAM is correct it will never switch
back to onshore flow in the afternoon. There will be widespread
triple digit heat across the interior sections. Max temps will be
10 to 15 degrees above normal. It is a near certainty that all
areas under a heat watch will be converted to heat warnings and
advisories later today. While the afternoon highs will be well
above normal north of Pt Conception there will be very good
overnight cooling. So much cooling that heat products will likely
not be necessary. Still residents of western SBA county and SLO
county should be take care in the afternoon heat.
Offshore flow peaks on Tuesday morning and not only will there be
advisory level Sundowner winds overnight there will be North to
Northeast canyon winds across portions of the vlys and perhaps
even the coasts.
The cloudless skies...high hgts and offshore flow will all combine
to make Tuesday the warmest day of the next 7. Max temps will rise
to 110 degrees in the warmest valleys. The inland portions of the
coastal plain will also climb well into the 90s. Max temps will
be 12 to 18 degrees above normal. Weak onshore flow returns in
the afternoon so there will be some coastal cooling towards mid
afternoon.
The heat wave and low humidities will bring widespread elevated
fire weather conditions across the region through much of next
week. See the fire discussion below for more details.
.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...05/311 AM.
No real relief from the heat in site for the interior through at
least next weekend. Both the EC and the GFS keep the upper high
over the CA/NV border with 594 hgts through next Sunday. Temps
will really not change much from day to day and the inland areas
may be under heat advisories for the duration of the period.
There will be increasing onshore flow both to the east and the
north through the period. Some marine layer stratus may start to
form as early as Thursday but more likely Friday. The earlier
arriving and stronger sea breeze will knock down temps across the
vlys and esp the coasts.
There will be a little uptick Monsoon activity Thursday but right
now it looks like it will stay to the south and east of the area.
The flow is not conducive for moisture transport on any other day
and convection will not be a worry.

At 1231Z at KLAX...The marine layer was 600 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was around 2300 feet with a temperature of about 27
degrees Celsius.
High confidence in inland TAFs.
N of Point Conception...Moderate to high confidence with VFR conds
through the next 24 hours. 30% chance for LIFR/IFR cigs at KSMX
after 06z this evening.
S of Point Conception...High confidence for IFR to low MVFR cigs
at KLGB through 16z. Moderate confidence for IFR cigs at KLAX
after 14z through 16z. Low confidence for KSMO getting any cigs
this morning. 20% for IFR conds after 14z-16z.
KLAX...Moderate confidence for IFR/low MVFR cigs after 14z through
16z. 30% chance could linger an additional hour. Low confidence
that VFR conds will persist over the next 24 hours after 16z this
morning.

.MARINE...05/821 AM.
For the Outer Waters... There will be a prolonged period of Small
Craft Advisory (SCA) level winds through at least early Tuesday
night, though there will likely be morning lulls each day. There is
a sixty percent chance of winds reaching Gale Force at times Monday
late afternoon through early Tuesday morning, particularly from
northwest of San Nicolas Island to north of Point Conception.
For the Inner Waters... North of Point Conception, SCA level winds
are expected this afternoon through early Monday morning and will
likely be issued again Monday afternoon through early Tuesday morning.
In addition, there is a seventy percent chance of SCA level winds
across the western portion of the Santa Barbara Channel late this
afternoon through early Monday morning. The same area will likely
need another SCA for Monday evening through early Tuesday Morning.
The elevated winds will generate a building short period swell for
most of the coastal waters each night. There is a potentially large
SE swell coming at the end of this coming week as a tropical system
moves off the Baja Coast. Large high tides greater than seven feet
are also expected for the middle to end of this week.
Overnight and morning locally dense fog is likely through the week.

.FIRE WEATHER...04/200 PM.
As high pressure builds over the area, bringing hot, dry and windy
conditions to the area, an extended period of critical fire
weather conditions will be possible from Sunday evening through
Tuesday evening.
The main areas of concern will be the Santa Barbara county
mountains and South Coast as well as the Interstate 5 Corridor
through the Ventura and Los Angeles county mountains. As northerly
pressure gradients increase, gusty north winds will be likely in
these areas. For Sunday night and Monday, wind gusts between 30
and 35 mph will be likely with stronger gusts (between 40 and 45
mph) Monday night and Tuesday morning. As these winds develop,
very dry air will move into the area, dropping afternoon relative
humidity into the single digits with little or no overnight
recovery. During the day on Tuesday, the northerly winds will
weaken and eventually shift to a more onshore direction. However
with very warm and dry conditions in place across the area,
critical fire weather conditions will possibly extend into
Tuesday evening.
Due to this potential combination of hot temperatures, very dry
air and gusty winds, critical fire weather conditions are
possible. Therefore, a FIRE WEATHER WATCH has been issued for the
Santa Barbara county mountains and South Coast as well as the
Ventura and Los Angeles county mountains from Sunday evening
through Tuesday evening.
These possible fire weather conditions as well as critically dry
vegetation will bring the potential for rapid and significant fire
growth for any fire ignitions. Additionally given the hot and dry
conditions, plume-dominated fire behavior would be likely with any
new starts. Everyone needs to use extreme caution near fire
ignition sources.
