Peak winds will likely occur Thursday night into Friday morning when there will be the potential for gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range for valleys and coasts, and 60 to 70 mph in the mountains. Humidities are in the single digits today and will spread down into the valleys and coasts late Thursday morning and afternoon. There will be poor overnight recoveries in the hills and windier locations Thursday night. Temperatures will warm into the 80s below the mountains on Friday. There will be an overall break in the winds Saturday and Saturday night, however, another Santa Ana is expected to develop Sunday through Monday. This wind event will not be as strong as the first, but humidities will again drop into the single digits and valley and coastal temperatures look warmer with highs into the mid 80s. .SYNOPSIS...07/819 AM.
Onshore flow will continue cooler conditions through today, along
with night through morning low clouds and fog, mainly south of
Point Conception. A warming and drying trend is expected Friday
and Saturday with breezy to windy conditions, especially through
and below passes and canyons. A warm dry pattern could linger
into early next week.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-FRI)...07/900 AM.
LAX profiler puts the marine layer depth at around 2500' this
morning so the 1000' of lowering worked out pretty well. Despite
that clearing is a little slower than yesterday thanks in part to
a slightly stronger onshore push. Temps will be cooler in most
areas and be near to slightly below seasonal norms. Rest of the
forecast looks on track based on what the 12z models are showing
so far. Still the same discrepancies in the gradients and cold air
support so there's still some uncertainty whether this will be
warning level wind event or just a high end advisory. Either way
it will be a windy couple of days Thu/Fri across LA/Ventura
counties and extremely dry.
***From previous discussion***
The NAM has consistently been showing a decent eddy spinning up
this evening and this should bring a quicker return of the low
clouds to the coasts and vlys south of Pt Conception this evening.
Thursday will start off fairly normally with the morning low
clouds dissipating by mid morning leaving sunny skies in their
wake. But change will be afoot. A trof will ripple through the
great basin as a ridge noses into the PAC NW. More importantly a
large cold sfc high pressure system moves into southern Idaho and
rapidly turns the pressure gradients offshore. Offshore winds will
develop during the morning and will quickly push the low clouds
away as well kicking off a 4 to 8 degree warming trend for most of
the coasts and vlys. Weak cool air advection will bring cooling to
the interior sections.
Thursday night and Friday...The NAM continues to forecast near
record offshore flow (-9 MB from KDAG) The GFS/EC continue to
forecast a DAG gradient somewhere between -7 and -8 MBs. The NAM
also has better cold air advection and upper support. If the NAM
does verify it would for sure result in a wide spread warning
level wind event. But think it is over forecasting (as it has a
habit of doing) and think the spectral mdls have the better idea
here with less offshore flow less upper and thermal support. So
this will likely end up being a high end advisory event or a low
end warning event. Still cannot ignore the NAM solution and will
have to monitor everything as the event draws nearer.
This is a little bit of an odd event in that the peak of the event
is forecast to be overnight Thursday and the predawn hours of
Friday. The winds are forecast to subside after sunrise Friday
which is usually when the Santa Anas peak.
Friday will be the warmest day with the best offshore flow. If the
NAM verifies max temps will be cooler than fcst due to the greater
amount of cool air the NAM brings in from the deserts. At a
minimum most coast and vlys will see another 3 to 6 degrees of
warming. Max temps will be 5 to 10 degrees above normal.
Wind sheltered areas will see very cool overnight minimum temps
due to the cooler very dry air mass and clear skies. The interior
vlys and the Antelope vly will likely see some readings at or just
below freezing, esp Friday night.
It will be very dry and needless to say there will be fire wx
concerns.
.LONG TERM (SAT-TUE)...07/302 AM.
Both the GFS and EC agree that a fast flow pattern will set up
over the west coast during the xtnd period. A ridge will move over
the area Saturday followed by a trof and then another ridge.
More importantly SFC high pressure will advect out of then advect
back into the great basin. Strong onshore trends on Saturday will
give way to strong offshore trends on Monday.
There will be cooling across the csts and vlys Saturday as the
offshore flow wanes. The interior, however will warm some as hgts
rise. There will still be offshore flow in the morning and there
will be some morning canyon winds but they will not reach
advisory levels.
Not much change on Sunday. On Monday the rapidly increasing
offshore flow will likely bring some advisory level gusts to the
area as well as warmer temps.
An upper ridge builds into the west coast on Tue and Wed. Offshore
flow will decrease but will remain solidly offshore. Hgts will
reach somewhere between 582 and 585 DM and max temps will rise
each day and will again be well above normal.

.AVIATION...07/1203Z.
At 0845z at KLAX... the inversion was near 1600 feet. The top of
the inversion was near 4400 feet with a temperature of about 18
degrees Celsius.
Overall... Low to moderate confidence in coastal and adjacent
valley TAFs south of Point Conception and high confidence
elsewhere. IFR/MVFR conditions at Ventura and Los Angeles County
coastal and adjacent valley sites will become VFR by 17z. There
is a thirty five percent chance of MVFR conditions developing at
KSBA through 16z. Similar IFR/MVFR conditions will develop south
of Point Conception after 08/08z. Otherwise and elsewhere VFR
conditions will prevail.
KLAX... Low to moderate confidence in TAF. MVFR conditions will
become VFR by 17z then return after 08/08z. There is a ten
percent chance of east winds greater than eight knots through 16z
then 08/06z-10z.
KBUR... Low to moderate confidence in TAF. IFR/MVFR conditions
will become VFR by 16z then returns after 08/10z. Otherwise VFR
conditions will prevail.

.MARINE...07/841 AM.
A marginal Small Craft Advisory was added for gusty winds for the
northern outer waters from this evening through late tonight. The
strongest winds are expected across the far northern and western
portion of the zone. There is a 40 percent chance of Small Craft
Advisory winds around Point Conception tonight.
There is a 50 percent chance of Small Craft Advisory level
northeast winds, especially nearshore between Rincon Point and
Pacific Palisades and south of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Thursday
through Friday. Otherwise and elsewhere, conditions will remain
below advisory criteria through Sunday.
