...HEAVY RAIN AND FLASH FLOODING POSSIBLE THROUGH SUNDAY...

.Locally heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding through Sunday
for areas along and west of Interstate 35 corridor. A slow moving
frontal boundary will push across the Hill Country and Edwards
Plateau throughout the day. Scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms are expected ahead of the frontal boundary. The
frontal boundary is then forecast to push across the Rio Grande
Plains this evening. An upper level disturbance across the
Southern U.S. Plains will also serve to enhance shower and
thunderstorm development late tonight into Sunday.

Storm total amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible with isolated
amounts up to 7 inches. The heavy rains should become more
isolated Sunday afternoon, allowing the flash flood concerns to
decrease.

.Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue
through this evening from near San Antonio westward into the Rio
Grande plains south of Del Rio. Some of these showers and storms
will produce locally heavy rainfall. Soils are saturated across
much of the region and any additional heavy rain will result in a
greater risk for flash flooding. Rainfall amounts up to 2 inches
are expected, with a few spots approaching 4 inches, especially
along and west of the the I-35 corridor south of San Antonio. The
focus for heavy rainfall is expected to shift southward toward
the middle Texas coast during the afternoon hours. Should the
threat for flash flooding end sooner than this evening, the flash
flood watch may be cancelled early.

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT THIS EVENING...

The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for

* A portion of south central Texas, including the following
areas, Atascosa, Bexar, Dimmit, Frio, Kinney, Maverick,
  Medina, Uvalde, and Zavala.

* Until 7 PM CDT this evening

* Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue
through the afternoon hours. Additional rainfall amounts up to
two inches with isolated amounts near 4 inches are possible. Due
to the sensitivity of wet grounds over the area, any additional
heavy rains will result in quick run-off and an increased risk
  for flash flooding.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

.UPDATE...
Please see the 06Z aviation forecast discussion below.

.AVIATION...
Some minor changes have been made to the ongoing forecast based on
current radar trends. For the next several hours, it appears DRT will
be most likely to be impacted by any thunderstorm activity and we
will continue to monitor and adjust the forecast as needed. Farther
east, it appears most of the convection should remain to the north
and west of the I-35 terminals. We should see more widespread
convection this afternoon as a cold front moves southward into the
region.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1042 PM CDT Fri Sep 7 2018/

UPDATE... /Revised PoPs back upward along the Hwy 281 corridor/
As the afternoon and early evening models were largely in error in
showing a decreasing trend over our central and most populous
counties, focus for convection that was shifting slowly north and
west reversed course after several outflow boundaries were generated.
This places new rounds of convection between Hwy 281 and I-35 from
San Antonio to Austin, with the area extending SW from San Antonio along
I-35. Features have been hard to detect, but one concerning feature
noticed is the appearance of an mcv associated with a slow moving
cluster of cells moving north into Frio County. Should this continue
to develop, rapid refresh mesoscale models will probably escalate
the rain potential and a short-fused watch will have to be
considered. These new rounds of convection, while showing abrupt
changes in trends, still remain mostly disorganized and short-lived.
Will continue to consider the larger scale forcing to be the arrival
of the front which should ultimately take over a few hours after
midnight with convection being more concentrated on the post frontal
side (or slightly west of the areas of new evening convection) by
daybreak.

PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 938 PM CDT Fri Sep 7 2018/

UPDATE... /Lowered PoPs along & East of I-35/
Evening cloud activity revealed little to no vertical growth east of
I-35 as a focusing mechanism has taken shape at roughly along a COT
to Boerne to Lago Vista line and drifting slowly northwestward. A
cold front will begin to focus activity along a DRT to ERV to BMQ
line with mesoscale models showing these two focusing mechanisms
merging together early Saturday morning. The focus for potential
heavy rain should thus be mainly north of a line from Eagle Pass to
Comfort to Marble Falls where isolated overnight/early morning totals
could exceed 3 inches in isolated spots. Heaviest storms should be
more shifted toward the Rio Grande where cell motions have a chance
to be slow to near stationary. Will continue to monitor for possible
flash flood threats, but there are not many mesoscale solutions
generating significant areas of excessive rainfall.

PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 646 PM CDT Fri Sep 7 2018/

UPDATE...
00Z Aviation forecast below.

AVIATION...
Isolated SHRAs and TSTMs ongoing early this evening across South
Central Texas. There should generally be a downward trend in
activity through sunset, with the exception of possibly near the Rio
Grande. Hi resolution models are in general agreement of an increase
in SHRAs and TSTMs 03Z-06Z near the Rio Grande, becoming numerous to
widespread overnight and into Saturday morning across the Rio Grande
and western Hill Country. This activity will impact the DRT terminal
through much of the overnight and into Saturday morning. Have gone
with VCTS after 04Z at DRT with prevailing SHRAs/TSTMs after 08Z.
Farther east could see re-development of isolated SHRAs overnight
across the I-35 and have included VCSH in SAT/SSF/AUS TAFs. Better
chances for TSRAs for eastern Hill Country and portions of I-35
corridor will come Saturday afternoon.

MVFR ceilings are forecast to develop again at SAT/SSF/AUS 06Z-08Z
and persist through 15Z. Could be some isolated locations that reach
IFR ceilings. MVFR ceilings are also possible at DRT in precip. Winds
generally S-SW around 5 kts tonight through Saturday morning at
SAT/SSF/AUS. A weak N wind will develop late Saturday afternoon and
night at these sites. SE wind around 5 kts at DRT this evening is
forecast to become NE overnight behind weak cold front and persist
through the day Saturday.

PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 319 PM CDT Fri Sep 7 2018/

SHORT TERM (Tonight through Saturday Night)...
A complicated forecast is expected to unfold for South Central Texas
during the short term portion of the forecast. Afternoon surface
analysis shows a series of boundaries draped across Texas this
afternoon, with a slow-moving cold front extending from Presidio
towards Abilene and up into Gainesville. The front has shown some
southeastward movement over the past few hours across I-20, aided by
outflow from convective cells within the line and a gradual shifting
of a mid-level trough over the Southern Plains. Based on current
radar trends and consensus of high resolution guidance, expect this
boundary to continue to slowly sag into the southern Hill Country
over the next 6-18 hours with showers and thunderstorms maintaining
themselves along the line in response to forcing from the parent mid-
level trough. Ahead of this front, diurnally driven convection this
afternoon will persist through sunset but likely taper off as
instability wanes.

Despite model consistency on the frontal movement, timing
consistency remains somewhat poor with guidance advertising the front
reaching the I-35 corridor anywhere between after midnight tonight
and sometime Saturday afternoon. Based on the current fast bias of
high resolution guidance and simple extrapolation showing arrival by
mid-morning, have slowed down the progression to have the front near
the I-35 corridor tomorrow morning. Warm air advection ahead of the
front may encourage showers to linger during the overnight hours
across the Coastal Plains, but an overall break is expected ahead of
the front overnight east of I-35. Rain chances will increase from
north to south early Saturday morning as the cold front reaches South
Central Texas. Periods of showers and thunderstorms will persist
across the region during the day Saturday with totals generally in
the 1-2 inch range before the day is out. Locally higher amounts will
be possible in convection along the line on Saturday and may result
in at least minor or nuisance flooding.

The front is expected to move very little Saturday night as the
parent trough axis digs farther south towards Mexico, with vorticity
maxima translating across the region in a west/southwest flow aloft
allowing for showers and thunderstorms to persist into the overnight
hours. Fairly unidirectional low and mid level wind profiles oriented
along the frontal boundary combined with the forcing from the mid-
level trough may potentially increase the threat for heavy rain
Saturday night as atmospheric moisture remains high (precipitable
water values around 2 inches). Conditions are favorable for flooding
or flash flooding to occur, but will be so dependent on placement of
the front and any other mesoscale boundaries... have held off on any
flash flood watch issuance at this time. One may be needed at some
point Saturday or Saturday night depending on trends, however.

LONG TERM (Sunday through Friday)...
The cold front begins to clear the region during the day on Sunday
as the mid-level trough axis swings east, but lingering Gulf moisture
will allow for the potential of locally heavy rain to persist across
the Coastal Plains before the front exits the region. Drier air
moving in behind the front will result in rain chances decreasing for
the region during the early to middle part of next week with
temperatures near seasonal normals.
