.SYNOPSIS...
A significant winter storm exits this evening with snow ending.
However strong winds continue into Saturday night resulting in
considerable blowing and drifting snow. The wind brings another
blast of arctic air through the weekend resulting in
dangerously cold wind chills. A cold front moves through
Southern New England Monday night followed by dry weather
Tuesday through Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
* Dropping temperatures and blowing snow Today *
Potent coastal low will continue to move to the northeast
this morning as it impacts the Canadian Maritimes. A very tight
pressure gradient remains across the region as wind gusts remain out
of the WNW at around 25-40 MPH. Fresh snowpack combined with
these gusty winds will result in any lose snow to blow across
area roadways. This will lead to hazardous travel especially
during the morning commute. Will continue the SPS for this reason.
Aside from the blowing snow, temperatures will continue to fall
early this morning as vort max will bring in some reinforcing cold
air. Temperatures appear to hold steady by late morning, but passing
arctic front will crash them temps aloft resulting in temps quickly
falling into the evening hours.
Because of the combo of gusty winds and falling temperatures went
ahead and hoisted the wind chill warning for the east slopes of the
Berkshires where confidence was highest in -25F wind chill values.
It won't be until the late afternoon hours when the interior will
begin to see windchill values to near -15 to -20F. Thus an advisory
has been issued for the evening hours.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SATURDAY/...
Tonight...
* Wind chill headlines issued for much of southern New England *
Upper level trough remains over the region tonight as strong ridge
builds over the upper Rockies. At the surface, high pressure across
the northern Plains will begin to track southeastward into the Great
Lakes. The combo of this high and lingering upper level low over the
Maritimes will keep a strong pressure gradient over the region. As a
result 925mb winds will increase to near 30-40 kts. Lapse rates per
Bufkit soundings remain steep allowing for these winds to mix to the
surface. So another breezy night with WNW wind gusts around 30 to 45
MPH. The strongest gusts will be across the terrain and near the
coast.
Strong CAA will continue to filter into the region tonight as
secondary shortwave moves through the trough. 850mb temps will fall
to around -25C, 3 STD below normal, by early Saturday morning
resulting in sub-zero temps across much of the region. The
combination of this cold air and strong wind gusts will result in
dangerously cold wind chills. Therefore a wind chill warning has
been issued for western and central MA where wind chills will fall
below -25F. Elsewhere wind chills will drop below -15F. The islands
will remain a bit to mild, but they still can see wind chill values
near -10F.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Big Picture...
Longwave pattern maintains a ridge-west/trough-east pattern through
the weekend, then flattens a little during next week. Shortwave
pattern shows upper low departing through the Maritimes but
lingering cyclonic flow through Sunday morning. The flow then
trends more zonal during next week. A trough moving ashore from the
Pacific will generate shortwaves in the northern and southern
streams. the shortwave in the northern stream crosses New England
Tuesday while the southern shortwave passes well south of us.
Model mass fields are similar through Monday, then show differences
with the two shortwaves as they cross the Eastern USA Monday night
and Tuesday. Differences continue through Thursday, although all
models agree on high pressure controlling our weather midweek. So
confidence is high over the weekend and moderate to high next week.
The main uncertainty is whether the Monday night cold front is
driven by divided northern-southern shortwaves or by a phased
eastern trough. Currently we favor the former,
Contours this weekend will be well below the normal 542 to 545 dm,
but as the flow becomes zonal the contours will climb to normal or a
little higher. So expect a cold weekend followed by moderation to
normal or a little above normal temperatures.
Details...
Saturday...
Cross sections show a layer of moisture at 850-925 mb suggesting
some sky cover especially north of the Mass Pike. Will stay with
partly to mostly sunny. Mixing reaches to 925 mb, with WNW winds in
that layer up to 30 knots available for gusts. Cold air with the
upper trough lingers through the day, with temps at 925 mb equiv to
850 mb temps of -27C to -31C. This would only support max sfc temps
in the single numbers except 10-13 along the south coast.
Wind chills in all parts of Southern New England will be subzero
through the day, and in northern and western Mass values will be
-15 to -25 even during the middle of the day. Winds will diminish
during the night, but wind chills will be brutal anyway with values
in CT-RI-SE Mass -15 to -24 while much of western-central-northeast
Mass will have wind chills of -25 to -35. We will extend wind chill
headlines to continue through Saturday night.
Air-water temperature differences reach around 25C Saturday, so we
expect continued ocean-effect clouds/snow showers just offshore.
Sunday...
The morning starts with more bone-chilling cold. But this will be a
transition day, as surface high pressure builds overhead. This
should continue the dry weather, and the diminishing wind should
shrink the ocean-effect clouds offshore. Temps aloft should be equiv
to -20 to -23C, supporting max sfc temps mid teens to lower 20s.
Monday-Tuesday...
GFS and ECMWF show no phasing of the northern and southern stream
shortwaves. So we favor the scenario of a cold front moving through
with no offshore low. Southwest flow ahead of the front will allow
temperatures to moderate further, in the upper 20s and 30s. We will
show chance pops for snow showers north and west , with rain or
rain/snow mix along the South Coast.
Supporting upper shortwave moves overhead on Tuesday together with
enough cold advection to bring daytime wind gusts. Winds aloft in
the mixed layer will support gusts of 25-30 knots. Temps in the
mixed layer will support max sfc temps in the 30s.
Wednesday-Thursday...
High pressure overhead Wednesday, then off to our east Thursday.
This should be a dry period, with temps cooling a little Wednesday
and then moderating in the southwest flow Thursday.

Coastal flood statement has been expanded for all of the MA east
coastline. High tide around 1 to 2 PM this afternoon will be
about half of a foot less than yesterday and with winds from the
WNW anticipate very little in the way of surge. However, we may
see some splashover across the west facing beaches of Cape Cod
where wave energy remains as waters have struggle to recede.
Otherwise the statement is more focused on any ongoing flooding
across the coastal regions. It appears that it will take time
some time (in some places hours and in a few others possibly
days) for the coastal flood waters to recede, especially given
the complications of snow and ice clogged drains. Especially
with any water that froze overnight.
