.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will bring dry conditions and unseasonably mild
temperatures today. A powerful and potentially long duration
coastal storm will impact southern New England Thursday night
into Saturday. Greatest concern is a high risk for moderate to
possibly even major coastal flooding along the eastern
Massachusetts coast. In addition, heavy rain, damaging wind
gusts and fresh water flooding are possible especially across
RI and eastern Mass. Rain may eventually change to wet snow in
some locations, but that is highly uncertain. Drier but windy
and chilly weather returns Sunday into early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
130 PM Update...

Band of scattered showers extending from northern Ohio and NW PA
then riding along the NY Thruway early this afternoon as seen
on NE regional 88D radar imagery. Some of the showers have
pushed into central and western areas but appear to have
weakened as they move into the drier air. Dewpoints have
gradually risen as S-SW winds have increased especially along S
coastal areas, the mid and lower Cape and islands. However, with
dewpoint depressions of 25 to 30 degrees, precip is evaporating
before reaching the ground. As airmass continues to moisten,
could see some brief showers fall across central Mass into N
RI/N CT through the remainder of the afternoon. Less than 0.1
inches QPF is expected. Have kept slight CHC to low CHC POPs in
the forecast through the afternoon into this evening, then
should dissipate.

Noting gusts up to around 20-30 kt, highest from Block Island
and Martha's Vineyard to KHYA and KFMH at 18Z. The gusts will
likely continue through the afternoon, but will slowly diminish
after 21Z.

Will continue to monitor temps at KBOS and KORH, but suspect
the readings will remain below record levels for today's date.

Have updated near term forecast to bring conditions current.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Tonight...

A moisture starved shortwave will cross the region tonight.
While moisture/forcing will be limited...perhaps just enough
for a brief passing sprinkle/spot shower or two but overall dry
weather prevails. Low temperatures should remain above freezing
in most locations...mainly in the 30s to near 40.

Thursday...

Low pressure south of Chicago early Thursday morning will lift
east northeast and probably be south of Lake Erie by early
Thursday evening. Much of the day should be dry in our region
with at least partial sunshine during the morning. We should see
skies become mostly cloudy from southwest to northeast during
the afternoon. It remains to be seen if any rain showers will
impact interior southern New England by late afternoon/early
evening as there are some timing difference amongst the models.
Either way...high temps probably reach well into the 50s in
many locations.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Big Picture...

Relatively flat flow initially over the Eastern USA. A shortwave
over the Great Lakes digs over the Northeast Friday and forms a
closed low centered offshore of Southern New England. This
slowly moves out to sea over the weekend. As this low digs on
Friday, a ridge builds over the Plains. The ridge moves east
over the weekend and across New England early next week.

Model mass fields have shown some run-to-run convergence in
their solutions. The GFS has trended south, the ECMWF has
trended north. Increasing confidence in the overall picture for
Southern New England, with lingering concerns over the details.

Details...

Thursday Night through Saturday...

Northern and southern stream shortwaves merge over the Midwest
Thursday and dig along the Mid Atlantic coast Thursday night.
As the the combined wave approaches the coast, a secondary low
forms and takes over from the the primary low.

Winds...Low level westerly jet over North Carolina gets wrapped
around the developing coastal low Thursday night, and redirects
toward Southern New England Friday. Winds in the jet become
southeast and increase to 60 knots 09z-12z as they approach Cape
Cod/Nantucket, and then increase to east-northeast 80-90 knots
by 18z as the jet shifts north off the North Shore. Mixing
profiles favor mixing to 925 mb, about 2000-3000 feet. Strong
winds will be found over the top of Eastern Mass and RI, and
topography may also favor the Worcester Hills getting clipped by
these strong winds. Connecticut and Western Mass have potential,
and later shifts will need to monitor, but there may be
shadowing at play in the west. We have issued a High Wind
Watch for Friday and Friday night

Rain...

A pool of high precipitable water values sits over the Southern
USA. As the coastal low develops and winds turn toward moving
north, some of this high water content moves north. PW values
increase over Southern New England, reaching 0.75 inches inland
and 1 inch along the south coast. This is above normal for this
time of year, although not as high as some storms this winter.
Northeast winds during Friday will generate areas of strong lift
along the East Mass coast due to a strong low convergence-
high divergence couplet with dynamic lift of about 150 mb per
hour. Orographic lift over the Worcester hills may also come
into play. Finally, the low will linger off the coast for a
couple of days, so the wet weather will have extra time to do
its work. Expecting wet weather with totals 1.5 to 3.0 inches.
Heaviest values look to be within the Boston-Worcester-
Newburyport triangle. With expected values, we have issued a
Flood Watch for Friday and Friday night. First concern is for
urban and small stream flooding. This may later progress to
flooding concerns as runoff reaches the larger rivers.

Snow...

Ageostropic flow turns from the northwest Thursday night and
from the west Friday. This may tap some cold air over Ontario,
but it does not look enough to overcome the 80-90 knot low level
east-northeast jet screaming in from Mass Bay and the Gulf of
Maine. Some snow is possible over the Berkshires, especially as
the storm starts moving off to the east. Rain and snow may mix
Friday and Friday night. We will look at an inch or two of
snow accumulation, mainly in the higher elevations of the
Berkshire east slopes.

Saturday-Sunday recovery...

Low pressure surface and aloft will move out to seas Saturday,
but with a stiff pressure gradient maintaining a lingering
north-northeast wind through the period. Winds will be strongest
Saturday, then trend lower Sunday. Drier air moves in above 850
mb, but moisture is forecast to linger at lower levels. with the
upper trough lingering overhead through the weekend, expect a
lot of clouds especially on Saturday.

Mixing continues through 925 mb during the weekend. This will
bring Saturday gusts 25 knots inland to 45 knots Cape
Cod/Islands, and Sunday gusts 15 knots inland to 35 knots Cape
Cod/Islands.

Early Next Week...

Wind and cold likely ease Tue as weak high pres crest over the
region.

begins to move southeast/offshore Saturday however very strong
NNE winds will continue.

Sunday...

Strong low pres moves farther southeast offshore but strong
pgradient continues to support NNE winds up to 50 kt possible
at times. Vsby good given dry weather.

*** Major Coastal Flooding Possible Friday and Saturday ***

All 00z model guidance has trended farther north and stronger with
coastal storm Thu night into Sat. Thus the risk for significant
coastal flooding has increased.  For this reason we will hoist a
coastal flood watch beginning with the late morning - midday high
tide Fri and continuing into the late morning - midday Sat high tide
cycle.

Parent low pres near Cleveland Thu evening weakens and gives way to
a new area of low pres off the Mid Atlc coast and then into a
powerful coastal storm somewhere between the 40N parallel to the
southern New England coast Fri with very strong onshore winds. The
low slowly pivots southeast moving away from southern New England
but strong NE winds linger into Sat. These strong winds will produce
a large storm surge Fri and Sat impacting two or three high tide
cycles. This long duration wind event will not only cause moderate
to major coastal flooding (from inundation and breaking waves) but
also significant beach erosion given the very large long period NE
wind waves that may approach 30 ft just offshore!

Storm surge values as of now ranging from 1.5 ft to 2.5 ft with 3.0
ft possible. Highest tides are the late morning - midday with the
late evening - midnight tide not as high. Wave model guidance very
robust with both SWANnam and SWANgfs indicating 30 ft waves possible
just offshore Fri and Fri night! WNA not too far behind at 27 ft!
Given these storm surge values and dangerous long period waves there
is a low risk for major coastal flooding with up to 3 high tide
cycles impacted! For example, water levels may approach or exceed 14
ft MLLW at Boston along with seas 25-30 ft offshore. If these values
verify major coastal flooding would occur and this includes large
break waves resulting in structural damage including seawalls.
