.SYNOPSIS...

High pressure will result in unseasonably mild weather today.
A powerful and potentially long duration coastal storm will
impact southern New England Thursday night into
Saturday. Greatest concern is a high risk for moderate to
possibly even major coastal flooding along the eastern MA
coast. In addition, heavy rain, damaging wind gusts and fresh
water flooding are possible especially across eastern MA and RI.
Rain may eventually change to wet snow in some locations...but
that is highly uncertain. Drier but windy weather returns early
next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

***Unseasonably mild temperatures this afternoon***

A beautiful day is on tap for the region as high pressure
continues to move east of the mid Atlantic coast. This will
allow a southwest flow of unseasonably mild temperatures this
afternoon. Given 850T rising to between +2C and +4C coupled with
good mixing...many locations should see high temperatures in
the upper 50s to near 60 away from the cooling marine influence
of the south coast. At least partial sunshine anticipated this
morning...but should see an increase in mid level cloudiness
from west to east through the afternoon ahead of a moisture
starved shortwave.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...

Tonight...

A moisture starved shortwave will cross the region tonight.
While moisture/forcing will be limited...perhaps just enough for
a brief passing sprinkle/spot shower or two but overall dry
weather prevails. Low temperatures should remain above freezing
in most locations...mainly in the 30s to near 40.

Thursday...

Low pressure south of Chicago early Thursday morning will lift
east northeast and probably be south of Lake Erie by early
Thursday evening. Much of the day should be dry in our
region with at least partial sunshine during the morning. We should
see skies become mostly cloudy from southwest to northeast
during the afternoon. It remains to be seen if any rain showers
will impact interior southern New England by late
afternoon/early evening as there are some timing difference
amongst the models. Either way...high temps probably reach well
into the 50s in many locations.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Big Picture...

Longwave scale shows a continuing ridge over the USA East Coast and
a trough over the Western USA. This pattern continues into the
weekend, then shifts to a flat flow early next week. There are signs
of a trough digging over the East next week.  Shortwave scale shows
one shortwave approaching Thursday night and forming a closed low
overhead for Friday and the weekend. Another shortwave trough
approaches at the end of the long-term period.

Main feature in the long term is a developing storm that affects our
area Thursday night-Friday. This is generated as a shortwave ejects
from the desert southwest, then merges with a northern stream
shortwave over the Plains before moving east for the end of the
week.

Surface mass fields show differences in placement of the Thursday-
Friday coastal low, with the GFS close to shore and the GGEM/ECMWF
south of 40/70. Thermal fields among the models show some
differences due to the different placements of the surface low.  Put
it together, this means low-moderate confidence through the long-
term forecast period.

Details...

Thursday-Friday...

Weak front over the region Thursday morning shifts south of us
Thursday afternoon/evening. Not a lot of moisture flow into this
front, although higher PW values trend into Srn New England by
evening. Moisture is distributed below 700 mb. Expect a lot of
clouds Thursday but limited precip if any and most of that should be
toward evening.

A 40-50 knot low level jet reaches the Carolina coast Thursday and
wraps north Thursday evening. This low level turning combined with
venting from the upper jet generates strong lift, on the order of 40-
50 mb per hour, and leads to a coastal redevelopment that moves up
the coast.

Temperature profiles, even on the cooler ECMWF and GGEM, are warm
enough for rain. The lack of a Maritime high and the presence of a
northwest ageostropic flow favors any cold air drainage coming from
Northern NY.  This suggests much of Southern New England has
widespread rain rather than snow. Best chance for any snow would be
in Northwest and North Central Mass, where that northwest drainage
would be most effective.

Precipitable water values reach 1 inch along the South Coast and
especially over Cape Cod and Islands. This suggests heaviest
rainfall in this area. But this may shift if the model solutions
also shift during the next day or so.

As the pressure gradient increases Thursday night so does the low
level wind with low level jet turning from the northeast and
building to 60-70 knots. The GFS has this rake the Mass East while
the ECMWF brushes the South Coast and Islands. We will go with 35-45
knot gusts along or just off the coast and across Cape Cod and
Islands, mainly Friday and Friday night. A wind headline may be
needed

Saturday-Sunday...

Offshore low pressure is under a closed low and moving slowly, but
should move out to sea over the weekend. A significant pressure
gradient lingers over the region Saturday, then diminishes Sunday.
So expect a windy Saturday over Eastern Mass and RI, trending
lighter Sunday although still gusty over the Cape and Islands. Low
level winds aloft should support gusts to 30 knots, possibly 35
knots over Cape Cod and Ids.

Clouds linger over the region Saturday, and linger over Cape Cod
Sunday.  This and a northeast surface wind off the water will keep
max temperatures near water temps in RI/Eastern Mass...overall max
temps 40-45. With dew points 25-30, min temps of 25-35 are
reasonable, warmest where cloudy.

Monday-Tuesday...

As noted earlier, timing on early-week features carries low to
moderate confidence. Use with care. High pressure builds over New
England Monday and Monday night, then slides northeast Tuesday.
Northern stream low and southern stream upper jet combine to push a
cold front through New England Tuesday night. Monday looks dry with
a lingering northeast wind in Eastern Mass. Winds turn from the
south Tuesday with increasing clouds/moisture/chance of rain/snow
late in the day.

.AVIATION /08Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Thursday/...

Today...High confidence. VFR with an increase in mid/high
cloudiness from west to east during the afternoon. Southwest
wind gusts of 20 to 25 knots expected on the coastal plain this
afternoon with the strongest of those winds near the south
coast.

Tonight...High confidence. VFR despite a fair amount of mid
level cloudiness. A brief sprinkle/spot shower or two is
possible...but should not impact cigs or vsbys. Perhaps some
localized MVFR/IFR conditions develop late in the typically
prone locations in patchy ground fog.

Wednesday...Moderate to high confidence. Mainly VFR...but may
see MVFR conditions arrive across the interior by late
afternoon/early evening along with some rain showers.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAFs.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAFs.

Outlook /Thursday Night through Sunday/...

Thursday Night: Mainly MVFR, with local IFR. Windy with gusts
to 30 kt. RA likely.

Friday: Mainly MVFR, with local IFR possible. Strong winds with
gusts to 45 kt. RA likely.

Friday Night: Mainly MVFR/IFR. Strong winds with gusts to 45
kt. Chance SN, chance RA.

Saturday: Mainly MVFR. Strong winds with gusts to 40 kt. Slight
chance RA.

Saturday Night: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible Cape Cod.
Strong winds with areas gusts to 40 kt.

Sunday: Mainly VFR. Windy with gusts to 35 kt.

Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Short Term /through Thursday/...

Today...Moderate to high confidence. Southwest wind gusts near
25 knots are expected to develop by afternoon. Strongest of
those winds will be near the south coast...but also may see
marginal 5 foot seas develop late across the outer-waters. Small
craft headlines in effect for most waters although it is
marginal.

Tonight...Moderate to high confidence. Lingering marginal small
craft wind gusts/seas across the outer-waters should diminish by
midnight.

Thursday...Moderate to high confidence. Winds and seas will
pretty much remain below small craft advisory thresholds. Some
ENE wind gusts may approach 20 to 25 knots across the southern
waters toward evening.

Outlook /Thursday Night through Sunday/...Moderate confidence.

Confidence...Moderate.

There remains considerable model spread for the Thursday night
through the weekend coastal/ocean storm. Started with the SWANNAM
out to 00Z Saturday and Wave Watch after that. Adjusted the SWANNAM
up 15 to 20 percent and the Watch Watch raw values at least 20
percent given this is a northeast flow case with long fetch and long
duration. We may still be a little too conservative but hopefully in
the ballpark. Tended to adjust seas more consistent with the surface
pressure field depicted by the 12Z operational runs of the ECMWF and
hedged slightly in the direction of the NAM and Canadian. Although
supported by a few of its ensemble members, the 12Z GFS seemed to be
an outlier with such a northern track.

The fetch, duration, and size of wind envelope will make this storm
very dangerous for mariners and will consider issuing a Marine
Weather Statement. There is a fairly high risk of storm force winds
across our southeast outer waters with a somewhat lower risk across
Mass Bay, Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound, and Vineyard Sound. The
long fetch and duration will allow seas to develop rather fully
across the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank and propagate into the
coastal waters. Anticipate seas may reach into the 20 to 25 foot
range across Stellwagen Bank, Massachusetts Bay, and the waters off
Cape Ann. Seas may exceed 25 feet late Friday into Saturday just
east of Cape Cod and Nantucket. It looks as though it will take into
early next weeks for the seas to subside fully.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The potential remains for significant coastal flooding/beach erosion
over several high tide cycles Friday into the weekend, primarily
along the eastern MA coast. Greatest concern for potentially at
least moderate coastal flooding and severe erosion exists for the
Friday, Friday night, and Saturday high tide cycles along the MA
east coast.  The combination of a very long fetch, very long
duration, and large envelope of gale to storm force winds will act
to build high seas and elevated storm surge. And this will occur
during a period of high astronomical tides. Very early estimates of
storm surge indicate we may see 3 to 3.5 feet midday Friday through
midday Saturday but those values may need to be adjusted in one
direction or the other as we gain greater confidence in the storm's
track and intensity. Seas of 20 to 25 feet a short distance offshore
are possible for these high tide cycles.

There is a relatively high risk we will experience moderate to
severe erosion due to the combination of high water levels and high
surf over multiple high tide cycles.

Some minor coastal impacts may show up as early as Friday morning
along south facing coasts of MA and RI. We may eventually need an
advisory for that tide cycle between 8 and 9 AM.  It currently looks
like a fairly high risk of reaching moderate coastal flooding along
a large reach of the coastline both north and south of Boston. There
is a risk, albeit low this far out, of major coastal flooding along
portions of the MA east coast.  The high tides of greatest concern
include the Friday late morning, Friday night, and Saturday midday
high tides for east and northeast facing shorelines of
Massachusetts. As the event progresses, the onshore winds will
diminish, but a long period swell will likely persist all the way
through the weekend and may cause some lingering impacts into
Sunday.

envelope of gale-to-storm force winds over the waters. Exposed
coastlines may experience serious overwash, and wave battery on some
shoreline structures may be an issue. Moderate to severe beach
erosion is anticipated along the eastern MA coast.

Minor effects may be felt as early as the Friday morning high tide
along the RI and MA South Coast. The high tides of greatest concern
are along the eastern MA coast during Friday late morning, Friday
night, and Saturday midday.

This remains a LOW CONFIDENCE FORECAST at this time.
