Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA
351 AM EDT Wed Jun 13 2018
.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will trigger scattered showers later this morning into
the afternoon followed by a few more showers into this evening.
Behind the front mainly dry weather along with pleasant temperatures
and low humidity for the rest of the week. Much warmer weather
arrives Sunday with summer heat and humidity for Monday. A few
showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday afternoon/evening
followed by drier and less humid weather Tuesday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
CI linked to a mid and upper lvl jet streak to the W continues
to pill across New England, but otherwise, WV imagery suggest
mainly dry mid and upper lvls. As sfc warm front, still well to
the SW approaches have been watching very light precip shield
continue to dissipate across PA and S NY as it meats the very
dry airmass in place. As such, continue to delay POPs and
approach of the warm front, something latest mesoscale guidance
has been leaning toward with each successive run.
With a slowed progression, column will take even longer to
moisten through the morning, favoring a trend toward lower QPF
values through the daylight hours today. However, with this
approach, a very apparent veering profile and gradual shift to
PWATS between 1.5-2.0in along with 40-50 kt LLJ should be enough
to support SCT SHRA mainly mid day during the afternoon, once
the column has saturated. Also noting, late this afternoon a
narrow ridge of high theta-e along the S coast, which may
enhance the risk for mod-heavy rainfall briefly. HREF/HRRR
supports this thinking as well. Everywhere else, expect chance
POPs. Although strong shear, lapse rates are low with little to
no sfc based instability. Therefore, have opted for no TS
through the daylight hours. Especially since the risk for
entering the warm sector, if at all is delayed to the evening.
Temps will be warmest across the E, as early day sunshine will
last longest there. Expect highs to range from the low 70s W to
upper 70s and low 80s E, away from the S coast.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Overnight...
Early in the evening, a brief period in the warm sector will be
met by an approaching cold front and upper lvl shortwave
rotating through NY and PA. Convection will fire there first,
this afternoon and evening. After a lull between precip
associated with the front late afternoon and early evening, will
need to watch this convection as it approaches during the late
evening hours.
There is a window, especially between 00Z and 05Z, in which
remnant lower lvl moisture will combine with a push of drier air
aloft to enhance sfc based or ML CAPE values thanks to the
better mid lvl lapse rates from the advection of dry air.
With bulk shear values still around 40-50 kt and veering
profile ahead of the approaching convection along with this
brief window of overlapping destabilization and moisture, there
is a risk, especially W of the I-91 corridor for convection to
persist. This window is mainly after 01Z-04Z, closest to the
cold frontal approach. As the convection shifts E, it will
interact with marine influenced airmass and drier air continues
to provide capping aloft, so suspect the convection to weaken
rapidly as it moves E into the early AM hours. The risk for SVR
is low, but non-zero especially thanks to the shear. Will need
to watch, but will only suggest a risk for heavy rainfall with
high PWATs given the gradual stabilization.
Otherwise, milder night thanks to the slow progression of the
weakening cold front and cloud cover. Expecting lows mainly in
the upper 50s and low-mid 60s.
Thu...
Parent low pres related to the cold frontal passage overnight
shifts through N New England. However, strong E-W gradient
provides W flow to limit SHRA activity through the day. However,
enough moisture in the lower column for cloud cover mainly
across the N and W interior. This will limit diurnal warming
there as well, so highs will be warmest across the S and E
coastlines. The gradient also suggests breezy conditions with W
winds around 20-25 mph. Any SHRA associated with a sharp
shortwave holds off until late evening/overnight Thu night.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Highlights...
* Mainly dry Thu ngt/Fri/Sat with pleasant temps/low humidity
* Exception may be a few brief showers Thu night/Fri morning
* Much warmer Sunday with summer heat and humidity Monday
Details...
Thursday night through Saturday...
Thursday night and Friday...Post frontal airmass well entrenched
across the region Thu night, however potent trailing northern stream
short wave moves across the area around daybreak Fri. Sufficient
moisture with this feature to support scattered showers late Thu
night into Fri morning with highest probs over northern and eastern
MA into RI. Improving conditions for the afternoon with clearing
behind departing short wave so expect dry weather and sunshine to
develop Fri afternoon. Unseasonably cool airmass associated with
this short wave as deterministic guidance lowers 850 temps to +4C to
+6C in its wake Fri 12z across southern New England! These values
about -1 standard deviations cooler than climo. However strong June
sunshine combined with a dry airmass and NW winds will be able to
boost temps well into the 70s Fri afternoon. Although airmass will
have a fall-ish feel with dew pts falling into the 40s Fri
afternoon.
Saturday...dry northwest flow continues providing very pleasant
weather with dew pts in the upper 40s and lower 50s. Core of cool
airmass moves offshore with 850 temps modifying to +12C to +14C.
These temps aloft combined with strong June sunshine will supports
highs of 80-85. Very pleasant with dew pts in the upper 40s and
lower 50s.
Sunday through Tuesday...
591 dam ridge builds across the TN valley and southeast states. This
advects anomalous warmth into southern New England with ensembles
indicating +18C airmass at 850 mb streaming across the region by
Monday. However deterministic guidance even warmer with +20C at 850
mb. Thus two good beach days coming up Sunday and Monday. Humidity
looks tolerable Sunday with dew pts in the 50s and approaching 60
late in the day. However much more humid Monday with dew pts well
into the 60s. Thus Monday still appears to be the hottest and most
humid day with highs 90-95 possible. Sunday not as hot with highs 85-
90. Sometime late Monday/Monday night northern stream short wave and
attending cold front likely breaks the heat and humidity. Ensembles
indicate some modest instability prefrontal environment. Thus could
be some T-storm potential to monitor as we draw closer to Monday.
Trend toward less humid weather Tue and beyond in wake of departing
frontal boundary.

.AVIATION /07Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...
Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.
Short Term /through Thursday/...
Through 15Z...High confidence.
Mainly VFR, although CIGS will gradually lower from SW-NE
through mid day. SW winds continue 15-20 kt at times.
After 15Z today into tonight...Moderate confidence.
Gradual reduction to widespread MVFR and occasional IFR, mainly
S of the Mass Pike, with mixed MVFR/VFR to the N through the
afternoon and evening. This is mainly due to CIGS, however SCT
SHRA will yield occasional MVFR vsbys as well. Fog develops
across the SE Coastlines, impacting primarily the Islands.
Otherwise between 00Z-05Z, some TSRA possible mainly W MA/CT,
dissipating to SHRA further E. Then improvement from lower
categories, W-E after 06Z.
Thu...High confidence.
Mainly VFR. W winds 15-20 kt at times.
Outlook /Thursday Night through Sunday/...
Thursday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Breezy.
Slight chance SHRA.
Friday through Sunday: VFR.
