.SYNOPSIS...
Bitterly cold air with dangerous wind chills persist into
Sunday morning. While dry weather prevails for the vast
majority of the region through the weekend, a period of ocean
effect snow is expected across the outer Cape tonight into
Sunday morning. High pressure moves south of the region Monday
as a cold front approaches, steadily pushing across the region
Monday night. Another large high will build across the eastern
seaboard through the end of the work week, bringing milder
temperatures especially Thursday and Friday. Another cold front
may approach late Friday or into next weekend, but timing is
uncertain.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...

1015 PM Update...

Overall trend in the forecast remains on track for this evening.
Mid-level shortwave around 850-700mb will push through the flow
tonight switching the winds to a more 310-330 direction. This
will help in the development of ocean effect snow showers which
could clip the outer Cape. No changes to accumulations.

Otherwise the focus remains on the wind chills for tonight.
Temperatures continue to fall with a few sites below zero
already. Winds gusts are slowly slacken as pressure gradient
eases up. However with approaching wave, gusts could pick up but
remain below 25 kts. Still this airmass is one of the coldest of
the season and wind chill values will be dangerously cold.

Temperatures...

Arctic trough remains over the region tonight with very
anomalous cold airmass in place thru at least 06z with -22C
to -24C air at 925 mb remaining over the area! Despite gusty
NNW winds keeping blyr well mixed record cold will occur given
strong CAA. See climate section below for specific records.

Wind Chills...

Frigid airmass coupled with gusty NNW winds will provide
dangerously cold wind chills of -20F to -30F over the interior
and -10F to -20F elsewhere. Thus will continue with previous
headlines of wind chill warning interior and wind chill advisory
elsewhere. Dangerously cold night to be outdoors for any length
of time.

Snow Potential...
As arctic high over the OH valley builds eastward west winds
become N-NW tonight. This will be a favorable wind trajectory
given the arctic airmass for ocean effect snows to clip the
outer Cape from Provincetown to Chatham. Wind direction is not
ideal at 320-330 degs but arctic airmass over relatively warm
ocean SST in the low 40s (ocean side of Cape Cod) yields very
steep low level lapse rates with a delta-T of about 26C (-22C
top of blyr to +4C SST). This yields up to 600 J/KG of ocean
induced CAPE and 0.25 NCAPE. QPF varies quite a bit among Hi
Res guid ranging from 0.01 to 0.10. Given the high snow ratios
expecting a coating to an inch possible with low risk of
isolated 2 inch amounts.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Sunday...

Bitterly cold wind chills persist into the morning but then the
cold eases during the afternoon as ridge of high pres builds
over the area, easing pgrad with much less wind. Still much
colder than normal with highs only 5-8 degs warmer than today
but much less wind will make the cold somewhat more tolerable.

Also another day of abundant ineffective sunshine given the low
sun angle.

Any lingering ocean effect snow showers at sunrise across the
outer Cape will erode quickly as subsidence inversion lowers
with approaching high pres.

So other than the very cold conditions a very tranquil winter
day by New England standards.

Sunday night...

Dry weather continues and not nearly as cold in response to
return flow around departing high pres.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Overview...

Overall progressive mid level steering pattern in place across
the lower 48 through about mid week, then an H5 long wave trough
digs south across the Plains states by around 12Z Thu.
Responding downstream long wave ridge builds from the Maritimes
down the eastern seaboard. The ridge slowly moves into the
western Atlantic by the end of the work week.

As the surface high situates off the mid Atlantic coast late
next week, could see a meridional cold front from western Quebec
to the Gulf coast shift slowly E next weekend. Noting another
strong high pressure center, with another shot of arctic air,
moving into the Plains states. With the long wave trough
situated over the central U.S., looks like warmer than normal
temperatures will be in place into next weekend.

Temps look to be close to normal from Monday through Wednesday,
then, as H5 heights rise to the lower-mid 570s decameters late
next week. Could see high temps running from 10 to 18 above
seasonal normals into early next weekend.

Noting model guidance in rather good agreement through mid
week, lending to above average confidence. Beyond Wednesday,
increasing timing and track differences come into play,
especially with the position and track of the next approaching
front sometime next weekend. This lends to lower confidence for
this timeframe.

Details...

Monday-Monday night...

Long wave H5 low amplitude trough traverses eastward in the
generally fast flow aloft, which crosses the Great Lakes to the
western Appalachians.

High pressure pushes off the eastern seaboard during the day.
Some timing issues with the onset of precip across western
areas, but with the progressive nature of the mid level trough,
should see some light snow develop across the west by midday,
then mix with rain across the S coast by around sunset. Appears
that mid level energy tends to split, with one chunk moving
across northern New England and the second moves off the NJ
coast. So, not expecting a lot of precip. Noting QPF amounts
generally from 0.05 to 0.15 inches, highest along the S coast.
So, should see light snow accumulations, mainly away from the S
coast.

Expect light/variable winds to shift to SW and pick up by midday
or early afternoon. Big question will be whether low level
mixing will materialize. Noting a 50 kt jet passing across late
in the day at H85, but mixing below that layer isn't the
greatest. If some of the wind does mix down, best shot will be
along the S coast where gusts could reach up to 25-35 mph.

Temps will rise to the 35-40 degree range across SE Mass and
southern RI, with readings in the upper 20s to lower 30s from
just S of Boston to N RI/N CT.

The cold front should clear the coast during Monday night.
Precip should taper off from N-S overnight though some may
linger across the Cape and islands through the night. Don't
expect temps to drop too low as clouds linger through the night.
Readings look to bottom out in the 20s inland and 30-35 along
the shore.

Tuesday-Wednesday...

May see another weak short wave pass across the region during
Tue, but little if any moisture with it. The arctic cold pool
has exited, but noting some cold air advection behind the front.
H85 temps down to -6C along the S coast to -11C over NW Mass
early Tue morning, but will modify quickly Tue night as H85
readings rise to 0C to -3C by 12Z Wed.

Expect dry conditions as high pressure moves across. Temps will
run close to seasonal normals, even at night with lows mainly
in the teens except the upper teens and 20s along the immediate
coast.

Clouds will increase Wed afternoon as leading edge of next
system starts to approach. Strong warm air advection noted
aloft, with H85 temps rising to +3C to +5C by around 06Z Thu
and still rising! Overnight lows will not be nearly as cold as
the last several days, mainly in the 20s to lower 30s for the
most part.

Thursday-Friday...

With strong warm air advection continuing as the long wave
trough digs across the central U.S., H85 temps could reach +7C
to +9C during Thu night. So, expect temps to be mainly in the
40s both Thu and Fri, but could see some 50 degree readings on
Fri across portions of E Mass and RI.

Precip will start to shift E during Thu, reaching to the CT
Valley during the afternoon, then pushing slowly E Thu night.
With overnight lows in the upper 30s to lower 40s, will
continue as rain. Big problem will be the snow getting water
logged especially as slug of precip moves across Thu night and
Fri, possibly up to 0.5 to 1 inch Fri-Fri night.

Next big question will be whether the colder air will start to
filter into N central and W Mass Fri night, which may mean a
possible freezing precip scenario. Something to monitor closely.

Saturday-Sunday...

Quite a bit of model solution spread in bringing the cold front
across the region. Noting wide solution spread with the mid
level feature as well. At this point, carried CHC POPs and
mainly rainfall, though could see a wintry mix during Saturday.
However, looks like low QPF, so could see only light snow and/or
ice amounts. Remains low confidence.

Any leftover precip should push offshore Sun morning with a
return to colder air, though not nearly as cold as over the last
week. However, the ending of the precip will be dependent upon
the front's movement.

...Accumulating Snow Possible Late Tonight into Sunday Morning
From Provincetown to Chatham...

A period of accumulating snow is possible late tonight into early
tomorrow morning across the outer Cape from Provincetown to
Chatham. Snow, mainly light will begin after midnight and
continue into Sunday morning. Accumulations will range from a
coating to an inch, with a low probability for a few locations
possibly picking up two inches.

Given the recent cold conditions any snowfall will quickly stick
to roadways resulting in slippery travel. Farther west toward
Hyannis little if any snow is expected.
