.SYNOPSIS...
Bitterly cold airmass over the region late Sunday gives way to a
gradual warming trend next week especially Thursday into
Saturday. High pressure moves south of the region Monday as a
cold front approaches, accompanied by scattered snow showers.
High pressure will build across the eastern seaboard through the
end of the work week. Another cold front may approach late
Friday or into next weekend, but timing and effects remain
uncertain.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/...

330 PM Update...

High pressure moves off the Mid Alantic coast and south of New
England tonight. The return flow will result in low temperatures
occurring early this evening and then temps rising overnight
courtsey of gusty southwest winds. Thus not nearly as cold as
previous nights. However the gusty southwest winds will provide
cold wind chills, again not the magnitude we've seen the past
few days.

Deeper interior valleys will take some time to see rising temps
but the coastal plain including the high terrain will see temps
rise beginning later this evening. BUFKIT soundings indicate southwest
winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph
possible.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...

Monday...

Lead short wave and attending cold front approach the region
from the northwest. Best lift and deep layer moisture overspread
the area between 4 pm and 7 pm from west to east. Forcing is
fairly weak and system is very progressive so precip duration is
fairly brief. Thus not expecting much qpf with all guidance
including Hi Res guid offering less than a tenth of an inch.

Southwest flow warms the boundary enough for snow showers to mix
with rain along the south coast and possibly northward to PVD-
PYM. Farther inland entire column cold enough to support all
snow. However given temps will be near freezing along with
precip intensity fairly light, expecting main roads to remain
wet especially those with any pretreatments. Secondary roads and
any untreated surfaces may see a coating of snow accumulation.
However not expecting much more than that. However still 36 hrs
out in model time so will have to watch if later model runs
trend stronger/heavier.

Becoming windy late in the day and early evening especially in
the coastal plain where southwest winds of 20-30 mph with gusts
up to 40 mph possible.

Monday Night...

Snow showers mixed with rain along the south coast may linger
until about 10 pm across Cape Cod and the Islands. Otherwise
drying trend during the evening as short wave and attending cold
front move offshore. Post frontal WNW CAA develops from west to
east. Could be some patchy black ice as temps fall back into the
20s overnight.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

Big Picture...

Zonal northern stream through midweek while southern stream features
two closed lows. Closed low over the Gulf of Mexico drifts east to
the Bahamas and fades away, while closed low over the Pacific Ocean
moves ashore in California Tuesday and phases with a northern stream
shortwave to form a deep trough over the Plains late week.
Meanwhile, West Atlantic high builds late week.

Initial shortwave in the northern stream moves across New England
Monday night and Tuesday. Another weak shortwave crosses northern
New England Wednesday night. Building ridge over the West Atlantic
and digging trough over the Plains will turn our upper flow from the
southwest late Thursday through Saturday, bringing milder air up
across our area.

Contour heights are briefly lower than normal Tuesday, then trend as
much as 1-2 std deviations above normal late week. Expect
temperatures to trend toward normal midweek, and then trend to above
normal temperatures later in the week.

Model mass fields and thermal fields are similar through Friday,
then diverge Saturday. Confidence in this forecast is moderate
to high through Thursday, then low to moderate Friday-Saturday.

Details...

Monday night-Tuesday...

Shortwave moving across New England drives a cold front through the
region. Expect highest pops in the early night, diminishing by
midnight. Dew points will be in the 20s, so min temps should range
from the 20s to lower 30s.

Northern stream trough is overhead Tuesday morning and moving off to
the east by evening. With the coldest air overhead, expect best
mixing during the day. This mixing should reach to between 900 and
850 mb. Winds in the mixed layer are forecast at 25-30 knots, so
expect a gusty day. Temperatures at the top of this layer will be
about -10C to -13C, so max sfc temps should be in the mid and upper
30s. Some concern for return of ocean effect snows east of MA, but
temperature differential will be marginal so we will leave that out
for now.

High pressure builds over the region Tuesday night with pressure
gradient and winds becoming light. With dew points 8 to 18, expect
min sfc temps in the teens and lower 20s.

Wednesday-Thursday...

High pressure over the region Wednesday shifts offshore Wednesday
night. This develops a mild southwest flow that will ride over the
colder air at the surface. Models show a weak shortwave moving along
the Canadian border Wednesday night which may be associated with a
warm front. The southwest flow continues on Thursday.

Expect dry weather and sunshine Wednesday, but likely increasing
clouds through the afternoon. Shallow mixing due to the strong warm
advection aloft and resulting inversion, but enough mixing to
support max sfc temps in the 30s.

Expect a lot of clouds Wednesday night and Thursday,  but limited
lift until the upper flow turns southwest Thursday
afternoon/evening, so expect much of this time to be dry. Temps
at 1000 mb support max sfc values Thursday in the 40s.

We held off on chance pops in our western areas until Thursday
evening, spreading across the region overnight. Less confidence
on this timing, which means rain could arrive a little faster
than we forecast.

Friday-Saturday...

Digging upper trough over the midwest maintains a southwest flow
over us during this period. This will guide shortwaves through the
flow up into Canada, remaining to our west. Eventually, one
shortwave will push the main area of rain into Southern New England.
We show pops in the 40 percents Friday and lingering 30 percents
Saturday.

Differences show between the GFS and ECMWF at low levels. The ECMWF
maintains the system to our west with southerly flow through
Saturday. The GFS draws the cold front south from the St Lawrence
Valley through Southern New England Friday night, then places cold
high pressure over Eastern Canada and an east flow across most of
Southern New England. The ECMWF scenario is a warm rain, the GFS
scenario is a cold rain and holds the possibility of snow or
freezing rain in the interior. Currently low pops, low confidence
for Saturday...while we wait and see how the model data evolves.

.AVIATION /20Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...
  Low - less than 30 percent.
  Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
  High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Monday Night/...

1815z Update...

This Evening and Overnight...high confidence.

Dry and VFR with CIGS BKN040-060 entering the region from west
to east after midnight.

Monday...high confidence on trend slightly lower on exact
timing.

VFR and dry until about 21z, then becoming MVFR from west to
east 21z-24z with mainly light snow showers, mixed with rain
showers along the south coast, possibly up to PVD-PYM. Given
temperatures will hover around freezing combined with light
precip intensity, runways should remain wet especially if
pretreated. SW winds increase 15-20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt
possible.

Monday night...

Period of MVFR in snow showers during the evening, mixed with
rain along the south coast then improving to VFR 00z-03z from
west to east as snow showers exit. Snow showers may coat
runways (especially if not pretreated) as temps fall into the
20s.

SW winds 20 to 30 kt with gusts up to 40 possible. Gale Watch
remains posted. Vsby lowers in rain/snow showers late in the
day. Freezing spray likely lingers until 10 am or so before
temps rise above freezing.

Monday night...

Cold front moves offshore with West winds 20-30 kt. Vsby may
lower in evening rain/snow showers.
