.SYNOPSIS...
Cooler than normal, but mainly dry conditions continue into
Friday. A significant coastal storm will impact the region
Saturday with heavy rainfall, strong coastal winds and minor
coastal flooding. Unsettled weather pattern lingers into early
next week, with the greatest risk for additional rainfall on
Monday as another low pressure affects our region. High pressure
builds in from the west Tuesday into Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
10pm update...

Guidance continues to mishandle the lower cloud cover which is
spilling across interior S New England this evening. It is
failing to capture the moisture trapped at the top of the
decaying BL, and as such is leaning more clear than actually
observed. Skies will be manually adjusted due to this.

Also, given the clear bias, overnight mins are likely too cool
based on guidance as well. Will adjust slightly up. However,
would rather not wholesale ignore these cooler lows as the setup
for radiational cooling is in place if the skies are able to
clear, so early AM inversion development could be quite rapid in
spite of the slower diurnal decline being experienced this
evening.

Previous discussion follows...

As the low off of Maine moves further away our pressure
gradient relaxes and winds will die down this evening as a
surface high settles over southern New England. Light winds and
clear skies will allow for very efficient radiational cooling
leading to quite the chilly night for everyone. Mid level
moisture moves in bringing increased clouds Friday morning but
it should be delayed enough to not affect our ability to achieve
lows in the upper 20s; 30s along the immediate coast. Trended
temps toward MOS guidance given the setup.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
The center of high pressure passes just south of the MA/RI
coast bringing a nice weather day to end the week. Winds will
be light out of the northwest, becoming southwest by afternoon.
Shifting southwest winds will bring in some marginally warmer
air, but the difference from Thursday will be negligible for
most. Those clouds that invade from the west Friday morning will
continue to thicken through the day from west to east, limiting
sun for western zones.

Friday night rain moves in from the southwest ahead of our
weekend coastal storm. Models are in fairly good agreement on
the track of the system through Friday night (south of New
Jersey), if not on the exact precip arrival time. Rain is
expected to generally arrive in CT after midnight and spread to
the eastern MA coast by 4-6 AM. Rain for most everyone, with the
exception of the Berkshires which could see a few hours of snow
or a rain/snow mix overnight. Ahead of the low center our
pressure gradient tightens quickly and a 40-45 kt LLJ nudges
into SNE bringing steadily increasing northeast winds after
midnight to the south coast and south coastal waters; expecting
wind gusts 30-35 mph along the immediate south coast and 40-45
mph over the southern waters.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights...

* Heavy rain and strong coastal wind Saturday
* Just a few showers possible Sunday, otherwise mainly dry
* Showers more likely Monday, then mainly dry Tue/Wed

Saturday into Saturday night...

Majority of the 25/12Z guidance tracks a low pressure developing
off the NJ coast early Saturday through interior southern New
England. Thus, looking at a rainfall event rather than snow. The
25/12Z NAM was the outlier solution, with a track closer to the
Cape Cod Canal. While within the average model track error for a
72 hour forecast, sided with the greater model consensus of an
track farther west.

Expecting widespread rainfall to develop early Saturday
morning, and continue into at least Saturday evening. For
portions of interior southern New England, steady rainfall may
persist into Sunday morning. Even with the end of steady
rainfall, there will be at least a chance for a few showers
through Sunday morning across much of southern New England.

Rainfall forecast of 1-2 inches with locally higher amounts
remains reasonable. These rainfall amounts will not be enough
for river flooding, but some nuisance urban and poor drainage
flooding is possible at the typically vulnerable locations.

Wind...
Still thinking there is a moderate with for strong to damaging
winds across a portion of southern New England, especially along
the immediate coasts. Will need to consider Wind Advisories, if
not High Wind Watches, with later forecasts tonight into
Friday. Strongest winds will likely affect the Cape/Islands,
where a 3-6 hr period of 50-60 mph gusts possible. The strong
wind will be capable of tree damage and scattered power outages.

Coastal flooding...
It appears the Saturday afternoon high tide is most vulnerable for
areas of minor flooding for east coastal MA. The astronomical tide
at Boston is 11.1 feet MLLW. Timing of low level jet will
likely be close to the time of high tide with seas ramping up
quickly through the morning and into the early afternoon. A
storm surge up to 1-2 ft is likely, combined with 10-15 ft seas
is expected to produce areas of minor coastal flooding along
the east coast, with areas from coastal Plymouth county to the
north shore most vulnerable.

Not expecting much if any coastal flooding risk for the late
Saturday night high tide due to a lower astronomical tide and less
surge and much less wind.

Sunday and Monday...

Persistent high amplitude mid level trough remains nearby. It
appears that Sunday may be mostly dry between shortwaves with
dry slot overhead and low pressure to the north with SW flow.
Still can't rule out a few showers, especially northern and
western MA. Increasing risk of rain on Monday as next shortwave
approaches with another coastal low possibly affecting the
region.

Tuesday Through Thursday...

Mid level trough axis is moving through New England Tue, which
may lead to a few showers, but mainly dry weather for most of
the area. Wednesday and Thursday looks to be drier as high pres
moves into the region.
