The Flash Flood Watch for portions of southeastern Massachusetts
and Rhode Island has been cancelled given the threat for flash flooding

.SYNOPSIS...
Cooler than normal, but mainly dry conditions continue into
Friday. A significant coastal storm will impact the region
Saturday with heavy rainfall, strong coastal winds and minor
coastal flooding. Mainly dry and seasonable conditions return
Sunday, but another low pressure will likely bring more rain on
Monday. High pressure follows Tuesday with dry weather, then an
approaching frontal system brings an increasing risk of showers
next Thursday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
1030 AM Update...

Line of clouds is currently draped from Hampshire county to
Rhode Island. This will slowly edge northeast through the day
ahead of our impending coastal storm. High Wind Watches have
been expanded along all MA and RI coastlines during the day
Saturday as wind gusts are expected to exceed 50 kts.

Previous Discussion...

Mid/high clouds will be overspreading the
region today with sunshine gradually fading behind increasing
cloud cover, especially across SW New Eng. High temps will
remain colder than normal, likely topping out in the low 50s
across much of the region. Slow development of return flow
supports this thinking as the high pres slides to the SE.

This evening, precip shield associated with the Nor'easter
gradually builds from the SW. Soundings are initially very dry
in the lower lvls, so expect the rain to hold off until the
early AM hours across most of S New England. Cannot rule out
some mixed wintry precip in the NW high terrain as there is
indication of some localized cold air damming initially.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY/...
** Strong Nor'easter to Impact The Region Saturday **
** Strong Winds and Coastal Flooding The Primary Impacts **

Overview...
Multi-faceted Nor'easter expected to impact the region
beginning early Sat morning and continuing into Sat evening.
Information regarding winds, rain and potential convection can
be found here, see below for more on the coastal flood threat.
Low pres will develop downwind of the Appalachians associated
with remnant convection late this afternoon and evening, then
gradually shift offshore. The parent low deepens as it shifts
offshore of the NJ coast early Sat, developing typical
warm/cold frontal setup as it begins to shift toward the S coast
of New England by afternoon. PWATs are roughly 2 std deviations
above normal thanks to lingering tropical moisture and final
locations of front/LLJ will ultimately define mesoscale impacts
where there remains some uncertainty, particularly with the
approach and potential passage of a warm front across SE
portions of the forecast area during the afternoon and evening
Sat.

Winds...
H92-H85 layer easterly LLJ crosses S-N from the S coast at 12Z,
shifting E with time, and dissipating off the E coast by
evening. Core of this LLJ is 50-60 kt as a mean between
guidance, but WRF/NAM suggest the possibility of 70 kt magnitude
just offshore. Lower lvl mixing will be limited except offshore
due to overnight cooling initially, which will limit the
ability for this momentum to fully reach the sfc. Some dry-
adiabatic lapse rates mainly along the outer extremities,
Cape/Islands and Cape Ann. Will hoist High Wind Watch for these
areas with this update, but its very likely at least wind
advisories may be needed during the mid AM to afternoon hours
especially along the S and E coastlines as this LLJ makes its
passage. Expecting downed trees given they remain fully
foliated.

Precipitation...
With moderately high PWATS and some banding possible as the
warm/cold front develop offshore, expect some periods of
moderate to heavy rainfall. This will be highest mainly across
SE MA and RI, closest to the approaching front. However, with E
flow, Worcester Hills and Berkshires are likely to see higher
rainfall amounts. Current rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches with a
few 2-4 inch amounts are possible, with these higher totals
focused across the SE and during the late morning and afternoon.
Will also need to monitor the risk for late day convection,
associated with the warm frontal passage (mainly across SE
MA/RI) as this is where highest rainfall rates could be
observed. Overall, typical urban and poor drainage flooding will
be the most likely impact from the rainfall, but it will
increase the wind threat due to ground softening.

Note, early AM temps will be very close, if not below freezing
at precip onset mainly in the higher terrain of
Franklin/Hampshire and N Worcester COs. A mix of SN/PL are
possible during the early morning hours with some very localized
icy conditions possible.

Convection...
At issue is the potential for a warm front to lift into the
Coastal Plain or at least across the SE Coast. With 00Z
guidance, the mean of placement is further E than previous runs,
however ranges stretch from just N of Nantucket, to near the
I95 corridor by 00Z Sun. This late timing is also coincident
with upper lvl dry slot moving in steepening mid lvl lapse rates
to 6.0-7.0C/km. Some indication of MU CAPE values 500+ and very
high helicity values given the LLJ. Therefore, this will need
to be watched as some stronger TS could develop within the dry
slot and/or along the warm front, enhancing both rainfall rates,
risk for strong winds and even a very low risk for an isolated
tornado if all dynamic/thermodynamic features can coincide.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights...

* Mainly dry and seasonable Sunday, a few showers possible north

* Dry weather Tue/Wed then risk of showers increases Thu

Saturday night...

Exact location of warm front remains uncertain but expecting the
boundary to be somewhere near the Cape Cod Canal Sat evening. Will
have to watch convective threat early in the evening across SE New
Eng where there will be some instability and strong low level shear.
Otherwise, despite mid level dry slot across SNE, abundant low level
moisture and shortwave energy lifting north into the region will
result in areas of light rain and drizzle. Positions of the low
level jet will bring strong E/NE winds in the evening across coastal
Essex county and Cape Ann with potential gusts to 40-50 mph.

Sunday...

Dry slot remains across the region with drying in the lower levels
occurring as low pres lifts to the north with SW flow
developing. Mainly dry conditions expected with even some
sunshine in the coastal plain, but a few showers still possible
in western New Eng closest to deeper moisture and another
shortwave passage to the west. Seasonable temps.

Sunday night into Monday...

The last in a series of shortwaves rotating around mid level trough
expected to move into New Eng late Sun night into Mon, with low pres
from the west tracking near or south of New Eng. This will likely
bring another period of rain Monday, but rainfall amounts mainly
less than 0.5 inch.

Tuesday into Thursday...

Pattern change expected as subtropical ridge returns across SE CONUS
with rising heights and SW flow developing aloft. Dry weather
expected Tue with high pres moving into the region with milder temps
Wed ahead of a cold front. There are timing and amplitude
differences with next amplifying trough to the west which impacts
timing and strength of next frontal system approaching Wed/Thu.
Based on ensemble guidance, maintained dry weather Wed with
increasing risk of showers Thu as system approaches.

VSBYS. Strong E winds gust to 20-30 kt in the interior with 35-50
possible across E and SE Coast, strongest Cape/Islands. LLWS is
likely given 50-60 kt at 2kft.

Winds and seas continue to diminish this morning, remaining
mainly below small craft thresholds through this evening.

The approach of a Nor'easter for Saturday will lead to strong
easterly winds beginning early Saturday morning and continuing
into Saturday evening. Some Storm wind gusts can be expected
except across the most sheltered bays (Boston Harbor,
Narragansett Bay) where Gales are expected. These will continue,
along with dangerous seas offshore (15-18 ft along the E coast
Saturday afternoon/evening). Storm/Gale Warnings will be issued.
Only caveat is Buzzards Bay due to uncertainty, which will
remain a storm watch with this cycle.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Saturday afternoon's high tide will coincide with the strong
winds and rough seas from an early season Nor'easter. The
astronomical tide at Boston is 11.1 feet MLLW. Timing of low
level jet will likely be close to the time of high tide with
seas ramping up quickly through the morning and into the early
afternoon. A storm surge up to 1-2 ft is likely, combined with
10-15 ft seas is expected to produce areas of minor coastal
flooding along the east coast, with areas from coastal Plymouth
county to the north shore most vulnerable. A few pockets of
minor coastal flooding is also possible along the south coast of
RI/MA but this will be very isolated.

Not expecting much if any coastal flooding risk for the late
Saturday night high tide due to a lower astronomical tide and less
surge and much less wind.
