.SYNOPSIS...
A strong low pressure passing west of the region will bring
lighter showers and diminishing winds overnight. The attending
cold front sweeps across the region Saturday afternoon bringing
an end to the mild weather. Behind the front, mainly dry and
seasonably cold conditions Sunday through Thursday. Another low
pressure system may bring rain late next week along with milder
temperatures.

715 PM Update...

Changes...

Downgraded High Wind Warnings to Wind advisory as back edge of
low level moving across eastern MA as of 7 pm. Thus downward
trend in winds this evening. Otherwise no major changes with
this update.

Overview...

Warm sector airmass remains across the region tonight with mild
conditions continuing. Potential short wave over eastern VA
rotates thru overnight with periods of low top less intense
showers. Despite rainfall intensity way down decided to hold
onto flood watch given many rivers/streams currently in flood or
will be going into flood. Also, with dew pts in the 55-60 range
tonight (well above normal nighttime lows for late Dec) expect
patchy fog overnight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...

Saturday...

Cold front moves through during the morning, moving to the Cape by
18Z, then completely offshore by 21Z. This front could generate
another round of showers, probably scattered in nature. Behind the
front winds shift to the W/NW. With the cold air advection and winds
at H925 30 to 40 kts for a period of time, could see some strong
wind gusts at the surface. Should peak out at 30-35 kts. Expecting
high temps in the morning, ranging from the mid 50s in the east, to
mid 40s in the western hills.

Once the cold front passes, temps are expected to fall during the
day. Should see some decrease in clouds, allowing for a mix of
clouds and sun. This could allow for precip to end as some light
snow showers in far NW MA. Little or no accumulation is expected.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...

4 PM update...

Highlights:

*Precip chances return around Friday

Saturday night through Sunday...

Saturday night the upper trough axis moves off the coast and flow
becomes zonal behind it. Post frontal WNW winds Saturday night will
bring in colder and drier air behind the departing storm system
dropping temperatures into the upper 20s. While right around normal
for late December, it will be quite a departure from the previous
night; around 20 degrees colder! We all knew the balmy temperatures
couldn't last long, and the rest of the forecast period returns to
right around normal. Sunday dry weather continues under weak ridging
with light winds and highs in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Sunday night and Monday...

Our only real chance of precipitation comes courtesy of a fast
moving weak clipper system that drops out of Canada with a mid level
shortwave Monday night, crossing southern New England around Monday
morning. This would likely bring scattered snow showers to the
region overnight Sunday into Monday. Given lack of a good moisture
source and the weak nature of the low, not expecting much more than
a coating to half an inch.

Tuesday through Friday...

Dry weather with partly to mostly sunny skies and seasonable
temperatures continue through Thursday under the influence of a
surface high pressure and building upper ridge. The pattern
breakdown comes late week around the Thursday night/Friday time
period as a deep trough digs into the midwest. Confidence in details
and timing is low given model disagreement, but trended with the
slower EC solution which has been more consistent. In general the
return of wet weather is possible by late week. Temperatures aloft
will be warming again so precip type, while uncertain, looks to be
mostly rain with perhaps some initial snow on the front end.

.AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Saturday/...High confidence.

00z update...

Strong low level jet over eastern MA moves offshore by 10 pm,
thus LLWS trending downward. S-SE winds this evening become S-SW
overnight. Cigs and vsbys a mix of MVFR/IFR with spotty LIFR at
times but trending upward with wind shift to SSW. Earlier
discussion below.

MVFR/IFR to start then conditions improving to VFR from W to E
by 18-20Z. SW winds becoming W/NW behind a cold front that
passes thru the area during the morning. Wind gusts 25 to 30
kts behind the front.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF.

Tonight...Gale Warnings are in effect for all coastal waters into
this evening, continuing until 1 am for the eastern coastal waters
including Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod Bay. Strong wind gusts
of 35 to 45 kts will gradually diminish, especially after
midnight. Seas 10 to 16 feet on the outer waters this evening
will start to subside later tonight. Periods of rain continue
this evening and also diminish in intensity/coverage overnight.

Saturday...Seas along the southern coastal waters remain rough
10 to 16 feet, with seas 5 to 8 feet for the eastern waters. SW
winds become W and may increase again to Gale Force during the
day.

Outlook /Saturday Night through Wednesday/...

Saturday Night: Low risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
35 kt. Rough seas up to 16 ft.

Sunday: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up
to 25 kt. Areas of rough seas.

Sunday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching
5 ft. Slight chance of rain showers.

Monday: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching 5 ft.

Monday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Local rough seas.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...

4 PM update...

*** Coastal Flood Advisory Remains In Effect For South Coast
RI/MA This Evening ***

Current/late day surge values running about 1.5 ft to 2.0 ft along
the south coast of MA/RI.  ESTOFS guidance verifying the best, only
running a few tenths too low. Surge values should remain steady thru
this evening's high tide given core of low level jet still
traversing the region along with modest pressure falls. Total water
levels will likely fall a few tenths to a half foot below flood
stage, so not expecting much if any water inundation in the upper
Bays such as Providence or New Bedford. However closer to the
coast/ocean large waves will likely break over sea walls yielding
minor coastal flooding. Block Island buoy (44097) already reporting
waves up to 13 ft. Thus coastal flood warning remains for the entire
south coast of MA/RI with the focus for ocean front communities.

Will likely have to extend the coastal flood advisory for the
Saturday morning high tide along the south coast with the astro tide
about a 1 foot higher. Wind and surge will be less but SSW winds
will preclude water from draining seaward out from the south
coastal bays/harbors/inlets. Thus another round of minor coastal
flooding is possible. This includes the cities and towns of
Providence and New Bedford.

...LINE OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS...

At 456 PM EST, Doppler radar was tracking a broken line of heavy
showers along a line extending from near Dartmouth to southwest of
Marthas Vineyard. Movement was north at 60 mph.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph will accompany these heavy showers.

Locations impacted include...
New Bedford, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dartmouth, Falmouth, Marshfield,
Marion, Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, Tisbury, Aquinnah, Yarmouth,
Middleborough, Hingham, Wareham, Sandwich, Bourne, Scituate, Pembroke
and Fairhaven.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Get indoors when these storms approach. Winds may be strong enough to
produce minor damage, such as a few downed branches.
