Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service La Crosse WI 642 AM CDT Tue Jun 19 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 302 AM CDT Tue Jun 19 2018 Early this morning, surface analysis showed the cold front had pushed into southern IA into IL. An approaching shortwave trough, areas of mid-level deformation and modest low-level moisture transport have helped to keep some shower/thunderstorm activity going through the late evening and early morning. Convection has remained rather weak with only 500-1000 J/kg of MUCAPE, mostly across northeast Iowa into southwest WI. For today, low-level easterly flow will advect somewhat drier air over the area. Expect decreasing shower chances through the day as the weak upper shortwave trough continues to progress east. Temps today will be much cooler across most areas with cloud cover. Highs will be in the 60s to mid 70s. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 302 AM CDT Tue Jun 19 2018 An upper low is forecast to slide slowly southeast during the middle and late week time from the northern high plains to the mid Mississippi Valley before swinging up into the southern Great Lakes this weekend. This track would keep rain chances across far southern MN through northeast IA and southwest WI, possibly spreading farther north and east later Friday into Saturday as the stacked low pressure system lifts northeastward towards Lake Michigan and additional weak troughing approaches from the northwest. Expect precipitation to be mainly showers given weak instability/poor lapse rates with widespread clouds at times, but could see a few thunderstorms closer to the upper low. By late weekend into early next weekend, upper ridging is expected to develop over the area with dry Canadian surface high pressure dropping south. Chances for convection may increase by Tuesday as 00Z models indicate an upper trough rotating out of the plains. Generally seasonable temps are expected during the middle of the week through early next week with highs for the most part in the 70s to low 80s and lows in the 50s to low 60s. The exception may be for some areas late this week if thicker clouds/showers hold temps down a bit. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning) Issued at 641 AM CDT Tue Jun 19 2018 MVFR to IFR conditions are expected at the TAF sites today in low stratus and showers. Plan on ceilings ranging from 200-800 ft at KRST and from 1500-2500 ft at KLSE. The visibility may briefly drop to around 2 SM in any heavier showers. Brief periods of BR are also possible, but the visibility is not expected to drop below 2 SM if the BR develops. && .HYDROLOGY...
