.SHORT TERM...Upper level ridge axis has moved east of the
panhandle leaving the Gulf of Alaska and the panhandle into a
Southwest flow. A series of waves in the southwest flow, and first
one rolls into the northern gulf and into the northeast gulf. The
first push of heavier rains will move spread into tonight to the
Yakutat area. The northern panhandle has lighter precipitation
which has started. Warmer air will be moved into the panhandle,
and this will push the rain snow line through the rest remainder
of the central panhandle and then north over Glacier Bay and
Northern Lynn Canal. The precipitation will start as snow over
then northern portions. Think that from Haines and Skagway will
hang on to sufficient cold air for snow that will drop several
inches which should reach Advisory levels.

The frontal band will sweep through the panhandle by Monday
evening, lingering over the southern panhandle before being
pushed north again as the next wave sweeps into the
northern/northeastern gulf Tuesday and with that front moving
through Tuesday night. This front will also be moving out of the
mid tropics with a lot of moisture, and will drop several inches
of rain over the southern panhandle.

The first front bringing in Gale force winds as the front sweeps
through and a few areas with Strong wind headlines for the
Northeast gulf coast and near Skagway. The second feature will be
as strong if not stronger for Tuesday system. Will need to watch
this system for more wind headlines as the system gets any closer.

.LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Sun night/ Extended continues to
look relatively warm for the first half of the week as a Bering
Sea trough remains in place funneling warm SW flow into the
panhandle. Some changes possible by Wed as the overall pattern
becomes a bit more zonal in nature. The pattern becomes very murky
by late week as some models try to bring a strong storm northward
into the southern panhandle late week (little in the way of
confidence on this scenario as the operational models vary widely
on track and it has no support from the ensembles).

What has a bit more confidence in the late week period is a
general cool down trend as some of the colder air from the Bering
Sea gets drawn eastward. Temperatures will likely get back down
somewhere near freezing for most northern panhandle locations.
Whether that translates to more snow remains to be seen as
suggestions from guidance range from rather dry to wet during that
time period. So precip chances remain at chance during that
period.
