.SHORT TERM...High impact weather system to affect SE Alaska over
the next 24 hrs. Morning water vapor imagery reveals a rapidly
developing cyclone roughly near 50N 143W or just south of the Gulf
of Alaska. Surface pressures as of a few hours ago were near 976mb
per a ship report close to the center and the system has since
continued to strengthen. Most guidance has the low deepening to
around 960mb or lower as it tracks northward into the central Gulf
by tonight.
Wind fields with the associated front are nothing less than
impressive, with as much as 75 to 80 kt at 925 mb spreading across
the southeast coastal waters this evening. Storm force winds of 55
to 60 kt will spread northward along the Gulf coast through the
evening and overnight hours. Forecast soundings indicate a stable
lower atmosphere initially, as well as a surface pressure gradient
that does not favor these extreme winds making it into the inside
waters or associated land area. Gales to strong gales are a good
bet however especially near ocean entrances and east/west oriented
channels.
Bent back front begins to take shape by late tonight over the
eastern Gulf. This "second wrap" will be associated a decrease in
lower atmospheric stability and some deep layer subsidence near a
strong PV anomaly digging into the backside of the storm system.
This will aid the stronger winds making it to the surface in gusts
for an hour or two near frontal passage. Guidance differs a bit
in the exact track of this front but it will pass close enough to
the coast where we thought it prudent to issue high wind warning
for gusts to 60 mph for our outer coastal zones. Immediately
behind the front, strong pressure rises will also occur roughly
from Port Alexander northward to Juneau/Gustavus and then NW
toward Yakutat. Thus expect a burst of SE gales into the northern
channels early Thursday with 50 mph likely in land areas.
Additionally a couple of embedded shortwaves can be seen on WV
imagery this morning behind the main storm. These disturbances
will rotate into the eastern Gulf Thursday and will likely lead to
another round of autumn thunderstorms for the Gulf and coastal
zones.
Microwave precipitable water analysis shows a deep tropical
connection with this system and thus a round of heavy rain is
expected, with the heaviest amounts falling where it is most
needed, in the southern Panhandle. Creeks and streams will likely
see rapid rises but flooding is not expected at this time.
Overall guidance is good agreement with the strength and track of
the main low but less so with the second front and its associated
wind impacts.
.LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday as of 10 pm Tuesday/
Upper trof will extend from western AK into the Gulf of AK at
beginning of long range period. The trof will move slowly E during
the weekend as upper pattern becomes a bit more progressive. After
the weekend, the flow pattern becomes tricky as models differ on
placement of key shortwave features. At the sfc, looks like a low
or lows will head N into the gulf for the weekend, with important
model differences on track and strength of the low(s). Given the
differences, decided to stick with current forecast for the longer
term period.
One aspect of the longer range forecast that will need to be
monitored is the wind for the weekend. Models suggest the low(s)
will have at least gale force winds, but given the differences in
track, did not have enough confidence in where to boost winds.
Left in the 25-30 kt winds for that time frame for the gulf.
