* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds gusting as high as 45 mph will 
  cause whiteout conditions in blowing snow. Significant 
  drifting of the snow is likely.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds
and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout
conditions, making travel extremely dangerous.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
The primary forecast concern will be winds over the next couple of
days as well as associated impacts due to blowing and drifting
snow. Otherwise, generally quiet weather pattern continues across
most of the forecast area. Good agreement among the 12/00Z model
solutions through through late Tuesday with some minor differences
in strength and position of the synoptic features. ECMWF, NAM,
and GFS have come more into align regarding the multiple
shortwaves within a trough and colder H850 airmass set to move
south over the eastern half of the forecast area. Spread in model
solutions from Wednesday onward, especially with a strong, cold
low progged to move south from the high Arctic late next week.

Aloft...at H500, a strong shortwave offshore of the western
Arctic Coast will move southwest over Cape Lisburne and Point
Hope this morning before forming a 522 dam low over Chukchi Sea
later this afternoon. This upper level low will continue to move
southwest over the Bering Strait this evening, and then over Saint
Lawrence Island and the Bering Sea tonight. A shortwave embedded
within a southward moving trough originating near the North Pole
will move south over the Beaufort Sea Friday morning, then move
onshore over the eastern Arctic Coast late Friday. This trough
will continue on its southward path over the Brooks Range and
Interior through late Saturday, and then southeast into the Yukon
by Sunday morning. Meanwhile, an upper level ridge will build
north and east across northern Alaska through early Monday. A 505
dam low and associated trough over the western Bering Sea Sunday
will move east towards the west coast through Monday. This low
looks to be the first of several low progged to move into the
Bering Sea, setting an active pattern for the west coast next
week.

Surface...Tight pressure gradient over the Brooks Range and West
Coast sandwiched in between strong high pressure centered over
the eastern Siberian Sea and broad trough over the southern half
of Alaska will increase through Friday morning as the high
pressure builds south over the North Slope with the tight gradient
shifting south over the interior through early Saturday. High
pressure will build south and reside over eastern two-thirds of
the forecast area through early next week. A strong low will move
out into the southwestern Bering Sea early Saturday with its
attendant front rotating north over St. Matthew Island and
Pribilofs Saturday morning, then over Saint Lawrence Island and
the Yukon Delta by late Saturday, continuing north and west over
the west coast through Monday. A second strong low will move out
into the southwestern Bering Sea by early Tuesday.

West Coast and Western Interior...Strong northeast winds continue
over the Chukchi Sea coast south over the Bering Strait and Saint
Lawrence Island. The strongest gusts so far up to 50 mph have
been recorded at Gambell and Kivalina. Strong winds have generated
low visibilities of around one half mile in blowing snow over the
Chukchi Sea coast from Kivalina north and a result have issued a
winter weather advisory for zone 207 through Friday morning.
Strong wind headlines for zones 208 and 213 and wind advisory for
zone 217 continue and are in good shape. Strong northeast winds
will weaken through the day Friday from Point Hope early to Saint
Lawrence Island later. Isolated to scattered rain and snow showers
from Gambell to Nome to Galena and south through Friday night with
weak upper level disturbance aloft. Temperatures will warm through
the weekend to above normals values. Models are advertising a
change towards a more active, progressive pattern for the West
Coast starting later this weekend and continuing into next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Winds will be the primary forecast
concern. Gusty west winds up to 45 mph have been reported
overnight at Kaktovik where gusty winds will persist through this
evening before weakening as the low near MacKenzie Bay moves east.
High pressure building north of the Brooks Range with a broad
trough to the south has resulted in a tight pressure gradient
along the Brooks Range. North gap winds are expected to develop in
passes this morning with gusts up to 40 mph possible. A strong
wind headline for zone 206 and a wind advisory for zone 218 have
been issued and will go out through Friday morning. Will see some
blowing and drifting snow in Brooks Range passes, especially along
the Dalton Highway, but not anticipating blowing snow to reduce
visibility. Areas of fog and stratus will continue across the
coast over the next couple of days.

Eastern and Central Interior...Beautiful warm weather will
continue across the area through Friday with highs generally in
the 40s and low 50s and lows in the mid to upper 20s. An upper
level trough and its surface reflection a cold front will drop
south across the area Friday night into Saturday. This will usher
in cooler temperatures with highs falling into the 30s and lows
into the teens by Sunday. Isolated to scattered snow and rain
showers will be possible ahead of the trough Thursday night into
Friday over the northern Interior, then further south Friday and
Saturday over the eastern Interior. Cooler temperatures will be
short lived as a warming trend is expected next week with the
upper level ridge building overhead.
