Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Active pattern across the West Coast and Western Interior will
continue throughout the forecast period and the develop over the
Central and Eastern Interior this weekend and continue for the
latter part of the forecast period. A series of winter weather
related hazards are in effect for a combination or either low
visibility due to blowing snow and/or cold windchill values over
the North Slope and Interior locations through this afternoon.
A strong low forecast to move into the western Bering Sea today
and bring an onslaught of strong winds, heavy snow, and blowing
snow to the West Coast starting this afternoon for Saint Lawrence
Island and the Bering Strait and then to the rest of the West
Coast tonight. Models are in good agreement through Saturday.
After Saturday, there is increasing spread between the ECMWF and
GFS regarding the strength and placement of strong upper level
lows and shortwaves moving in the progressive pattern.

Aloft...At H500, strong upper low over the eastern Arctic Ocean
with an associated trough south over eastern Alaska will be
gradually pushed east into western Canada as an upper level ridge
currently over the Bering Sea and West Coast shifts east over
Interior Alaska through Friday. A strong upper low will move
north over the western Bering Sea today and over eastern Russia
tonight with an associated upper level trough stretching south
over the Bering Sea and western Aleutians. This upper level trough
with several embedded shortwaves will shift east towards Western
Alaska through Friday and then will move over the Interior
Saturday. After Saturday, several more shortwaves will move in the
westerly flow through the rest of the forecast period. Strength
and placement differ between the GFS and ECMWF with these
shortwaves.

Eastern and Central Interior...Winter Weather Advisories for zones
218, 223, 224, and 225 are ongoing for low visibility due to
blowing snow and cold wind chill values in the Southeastern Brooks
Range through noon today. Gusty west to southwest winds are still
being reported at locations within these advisories with blowing
snow likely. Conditions will improve late this morning as winds
dissipate. Skies have cleared over the central interior with skies
clearing over the eastern interior this morning as high pressure
builds overhead. Temperatures have quickly cooled off once skies
cleared, cooling by 20 degrees within a couple of hours. A similar
trend is expected today over the eastern interior once skies
clear with the coldest morning lows expected Thursday morning. A
warming trend, more noticeable at higher elevations, expected
Friday through the weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...A front associated with a strong
low over the western Bering Sea will move over Saint Lawrence
Island this afternoon, then over the Bering Strait and Yukon Delta
tonight, and then inland Thursday. Strong winds and heavy snow
will accompany this front as it moves east. Blizzard conditions
are expected over Saint Lawrence Island and the Bering Strait with
snow amounts 7 to 13 inches and high surf expected where a
Blizzard Warning and High Surf Advisory has been issued. Winter
Storm Watches have been issued for the Yukon Delta, Seward
Peninsula, Baldwin Peninsula, and Chukchi Sea Coast for the
potential blizzard conditions as well as heavy snow for the
southern Seward Peninsula Coast. A winter weather advisory has
also been issued for Eastern Norton Sound and the Nulato Hills
where gusty southeast winds and low visibility in blowing snow is
expected. Following this event, a progressive and active pattern
will continue into next week with the potential for more snow and
winter weather related hazards.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Gusty west winds up to 45 mph and
near to blizzard conditions along the eastern Beaufort Sea Coast
will dissipate later this morning. Cold temperatures combined with
breezy conditions over the North Slope have resulted in cold wind
chill values as low as 55 below overnight. As winds decrease this
morning, wind chill values will warm. Winds will increase along
the western Arctic Coast from Barrow west Thursday with snow and
blowing snow possible through Friday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...High Surf Advisory for
zone 213 from midnight tonight through Friday.
