Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A deep upper level trough extends south across the Eastern
Bering/Aleutians well into the Pacific Ocean. This trough is
supporting a strong vertically stacked 964 mb surface low centered
over the North Gulf Coast moving north into the Prince William
Sound. Satellite imagery shows a well defined cyclonic system with
dry air wrapping into the low center, a sign of previous
intensification. Over the past hour or so, the stream of dry air
has been cut off as the low begins to fill and weaken. A wide
swath of precipitation is seen on radar moving across the Gulf
Coast. Strong winds were seen through channeled terrain and have
led to strong cross barrier flow and downsloping on the lee of the
Chugach Mountains. Recent scatterometer passes show a wide swath
of gale force winds over the Northern Gulf of Alaska with areas of
storm force winds showing up near the coast between Cordova and
Yakutat, indicative of a strong coastal barrier jet. The next
system is beginning to show up on satellite, currently near 50 N
over the N Pacific moving north towards the Gulf of Alaska.

Further west, dry northerly flow can be seen over SW mainland and
the Central/Eastern Bering Sea, with a wide swath of open cell
cumulus seen pushing south across the Bering. High clouds can be
seen well ahead of the next low moving into the Western
Bering/Aleutians.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models agreement has improved regarding the next low rapidly
moving north into the Gulf. The low track is fairly consistent
between models, with the center coming right through the gut of
Prince William Sound sometime tonight. Models are still
struggling with timing though, with the EC the fastest solution
and the NAM/Canadian the slowest, with the GFS in between. Models
are also struggling with some of the finer details as the system
moves through, especially with precipitation type and location over
the Anchorage/Mat-Su areas tonight. A deformation zone is
expected to form around the area, but the exact location is
uncertain. The GFS brings snow over all of Anchorage while the
some of the Hi-Res models keep the band just to the east.
Obviously, these small differences will have significant
implications to the short-term forecast today. Decided to go with
the NAM solution which takes more of a middle ground approach with
better run-to-run consistency.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Conditions over the terminal should start off VFR with
Anchorage staying in the downslope hole. As the low lifts north
out of the area, precipitation will move up the Cook Inlet and
over the terminal later this morning. Temperatures should hold up
keeping precipitation rain or mixed, but with colder air
advecting from the west, should change over to all snow later this
afternoon. This should drop the flight category to IFR, though if
slower to change over expect cig/vis to remain MVFR. Tonight,
snow is expected to form as the next low pulls north, though there
is model disagreement as to how far west the heaviest snow will
be, with some model solutions keeping the terminal west of the
main snow band.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2/Today
through Sunday night)...

A powerful storm force low over Prince William Sound early this
morning will head quickly inland, with an approximate track to
the far western Copper River Basin. Strong pressure rises behind
the low will contribute to strong gusty winds spreading from
eastern Prince William Sound early this morning across the Copper
River Basin during the morning hours. As is typical some of the
strongest winds will be along and near the Copper River. Areas to
the west of Prince William Sound will see much smaller pressure
rises, with most of the increase in winds felt on mountain tops.
Temperatures will rapidly rise as winds arrive, especially across
the Copper River Basin where there may be a 15 to 20 degree rise
as the shallow cold air is scoured out.

Precipitation will spread inland with the low. With many areas
right near the threshold between rain and snow there will be
quite the mixed bag of precipitation types out there. Precipitation
type will tend to vary over small distances depending on intensity
of precipitation and whether the winds are blowing (producing
warm temps). This is especially true in Anchorage and the Mat
Valley, as a bit of wind is expected to move off the Inlet into
west Anchorage and out of the Knik River Valley into Palmer. This
may keep these areas warm enough for all rain while nearby areas
with little or no wind remain cold enough for snow or a mix.

Meanwhile, a series of troughs moving in from the Bering are
advecting colder air into the western Gulf. As the storm heads
inland this afternoon this cold air will begin to work its way
up Cook Inlet and the Kenai Peninsula toward Anchorage which could
be just enough to change any remaining precipitation to all snow
during the mid to late afternoon hours.

Another weaker storm system moving up from the Northeast Pacific
this morning will track rapidly to Prince William Sound this
evening. With such little space between storm systems expect
multiple rapid changes in wind speed and direction across the
Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound marine areas. As the low
tracks northward today a couple troughs will phase (or almost
phase) and interact across Southwest Alaska. The speed of this
trough will determine where the surface low heads inland - and
there is quite a bit of uncertainty in the ultimate track at the
moment. A track toward western Prince William Sound would lead to
a deformation band over Anchorage and the Mat-Su, bringing
accumulating snow tonight. A further east track means this band
would set up further north and east, so Anchorage (or portions
of) would see no snow at all. Right now the forecast calls for
some light snow accumulation across all of Anchorage and the
Mat-Su, with highest amounts in the Mat-Su. In any case, cold air
will continue to advect across all of Southcentral tonight into
Sunday morning gradually changing precipitation to all snow,
even along the coast.

The active weather doesn't end there. Another trough and surface
frontal system will move into the western Gulf Sunday then spread
northward toward Southcentral Sunday night. It's a bit soon to
nail down the details of weather with this. However, the one thing
that can be said with confidence is that an arctic air mass will
be in place when this arrives and there will be only marginally
warmer air accompanying this system. Thus, precipitation looks
like it will mainly be in the form of snow.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Monday)...

The snow impacting far eastern portions of Southwest Alaska this
morning is weakening and shifting further east into the Alaska
Range. Thus, the Winter Weather Advisories are both cancelled.

A small area of low pressure over Norton Sound continues to keep
gusty northerly winds ongoing along the coast. As the low moves
north and weakens, those winds will diminish tonight. A small
area of surface ridging will help keep the area dry, with only an
isolated snow shower or two across the Kuskokwim Delta from that
low today. Otherwise, the cold air mass will continue to build
into the area keeping temperatures seasonably cold with highs in
the 10s and 20s and lows dipping to around zero in the colder
spots of the Lower Kuskokwim Valley that clear out tonight.

On Sunday morning, a "warm" front and associated area of low
pressure will bring the next round of wintry precipitation to the
area. The front now appears to be fairly fast-moving, and will
quickly weaken as it moves inland during the day Sunday. As such,
the worst conditions are expected to be from King Salmon west
through Dillingham and the Western Capes during the day Sunday. In
these areas, a broad 1 to 3 inches of snow are expected, with
isolated amounts of 4 and 5 inches possible on the eastern slopes
of the Kuskokwim Mountains due to the easterly winds. The front
will have some wind to it (15 to 30 mph), especially at the
coast, so areas of blowing snow are possible that may briefly
reduce visibilities. The air mass initially with the front is only
marginally warmer, and as such, only areas at the immediate coast
and south of King Salmon have much chance of seeing anything
other than snow with it. The low associated with the front is
expected to approach Cape Newenham Sunday afternoon and stall out
around that area into Monday. Weak disturbances will track
northward through Bristol Bay and the Lower Kuskokwim Valley
Sunday night and Monday. None of these features is expected to be
particularly strong, so this weather pattern is likely to feature
off-and-on snow showers for most. However, some of the models are
hinting at deformation banding potentially developing Monday
morning somewhere over Bristol Bay and the Lower Kuskokwim Valley,
but those features are small and very difficult to pin down
location-wise much in advance.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Monday)...

A few changes to the forecast were made across the Bering this
morning, but nothing amounting to large changes. The primary
hazard continues to be an area of low pressure tracking eastward
into the Western Bering and Aleutians this afternoon. South of the
low center, the low and its associated core of stronger westerly
winds will be moving over the same area of waves as the waves also
track westward with the low. As such, dynamic fetch is likely to
produce some very high seas primarily on the Pacific side of the
Western Aleutians starting this afternoon, peaking tonight, then
slowly subsiding during the day Sunday. The models now have the
low slowing its forward motion and maintaining its intensity
during this time instead of continuing to strengthen. As such, the
wave forecast has been reduced somewhat since now all the
conditions meeting the criteria needed to sustain fully risen seas
and dynamic fetch are slightly diminished. However, waves of 30
to 40 feet are still expected, and mariners are still urged to
avoid the area. Waves on the Bering side will still be elevated in
the 20 to 30 foot range, but the islands will help protect that
side from seeing the highest waves.

The low is expected to elongate and develop multiple centers
further east during the day Sunday, following along a steadily
progressing leading front across the Southern Bering and
Aleutians. With decent cold air present, snow will mix with rain
with this feature along the Aleutians, with snow expected for the
Pribilofs tonight. Temperatures should be just below freezing,
making for a wet snow there, which should negate the blowing snow
threat a bit, though heavy wet snow falling in 30 mph winds will
still make for deteriorated conditions overnight. All the low
centers will shift eastward Sunday night into Monday, and move
into the Gulf by Monday night. Behind the low, more cold air and
northerly winds will redevelop over all of the eastern half of the
Bering on Monday, as the winds relax over the western Bering by
Monday afternoon.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7)...
(Tuesday through Friday)

The active pattern continues this afternoon's weather theme, as
model continuity continues to be moderate to good as a series of
storms affect the region. Our first contender in the extended is a
rapidly deepening storm (into the lower 950s mb range) lifting
north into the Gulf. This system will pull some tropical moisture
into our neck of the woods, with current forecast values being
some 300 to 400 percent above normal. At this time, the heaviest
precipitation looks to be along the coastal locations along the
Gulf, but, some fairly respectable precipitation totals looks to
make it into much of Southcentral as well. Additionally, one
notable change today is all models have trended cooler with some
wintry type precipitation a legitimate possibility. As is typical
with these deep systems, strong winds for the upper elevations and
marine waters are extremely likely, with sustained storm force
winds a good bet.

Our attention then turns to another storm, with this one passing
south of the Aleutians on Tuesday, moving into the Gulf on
Wednesday. Most of the heavy precipitation with this 950s mb low
looks to stay south of the chain, but some storm force winds are
possible for the southern coastal waters. By the time it enters
the Gulf it will have weakened some, as current forecasts have it
in the lower 960s with a further south track compared to
yesterday. These two things are noteworthy, because the tropical
moisture will still make its way into Southcentral, but the warm
advection now looks to be less aggressive, with the majority of
the precipitation looking to be snow (hope I didn't just jinx
that), but for you snow lovers this could be one of our best
potentials this year IF...the current forecast holds. It's still
several days out but the trend towards this has been consistent
the last several model runs.

Looking just beyond the extended forecast range, it looks like
more of the same is on tap for us...so stay tuned!
