.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level area of high pressure has moved north this morning,
making room for a large frontal zone to advance inland over
Southwest. A weakening vertically stacked low originating from
the North Pacific is now positioned over Bristol Bay and slowly
drifting northward. At the surface, radar imagery shows rain
spreading in along the coastal areas of Southwest in addition to
the AKPEN and Kenai Peninsula. In addition to rain, surface
observations indicate continued gusty southeasterly flow along the
AKPEN and Kodiak Island. As the front associated with the low over
Bristol Bay continues to lift to the northeast, conditions will
become favorable for a Turnagain Arm wind to develop.

Looking further west, the remnants of typhoon Trami continue to
move eastward. Satellite imagery indicates the leading edge of
the front is approaching Umnak Island this morning while the 963
mb low center is situated 130 nm north of Shemya.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Overall, models are in good agreement regarding synoptic scale
features through the next 48 hours with only minor differences
in location of the low center as the remnants of typhoon Trami
progress eastward across the Bering. By day 3, more significant
differences arise on the location of the low as solutions show it
retreating back to the northwestern Bering. At this time, the GFS
solution was preferred.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The shift in the weather pattern is now occurring. The front
that has been progressing slowly northeastward the past few days
(as it pushes into the ridge over the mainland part of the state) is
now situated across the central Gulf and stretching over Cook Inlet
into the Kuskokwim Valley. This front is bringing some rainfall to
the windward side of the Kenai mountains this morning and the
precipitation will move to the windward Chugach mountains as well
this afternoon. The lee side of the mountains will largely remain
dry with just a little rain spilling over the mountains. The Copper
River Basin is the area still under the influence of the ridge to
the point there will still be plenty of clear skies there today with
higher clouds finally moving in tonight.

A second front will move to Kodiak Island Wednesday and take a
very similar track to the one currently moving through the
region. The main difference is that this new front will have a
little stronger upper level support and some colder air aloft
which will increase the chance of rain making it to inland areas
on the lee side of the Chugach and Kenai Mountains. It will also
enhance the winds along the north Gulf coast and Prince William
Sound.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A surface low situated west of Kuskokwim Bay this morning
continues to bring scattered showers to the southwest coast as
well as gusty southeasterly winds and a steadier rain to the
windward side of the AKPEN. These showers and gusty winds will
wind down through the day as the low fills and the upper-level low
shears apart as it moves over the interior. Gusty southeasterly
winds and rain will be on the increase once again tomorrow as a
fast-moving occluded front drives toward the coast. The heaviest
precipitation looks to be along the the upslope regions of the
AKPEN and higher terrain of the interior Southwest, while
locations in the lee of the terrain will see only periods of
rainfall due to downsloping winds. The front will slow its forward
advance late Tuesday, but will eventually push across the
southwest mainland late Wednesday. Two shortwave troughs will
then eject from a vertically-stacked low in the central Bering,
helping to reinforce the gusty southerly winds for Thursday and
keep scattered showers over the southwest coast into Friday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A weakening low south of Nunivak Island is lifting north this
morning with a weak ridge building into the eastern Bering behind
it. Plenty of low stratus remains in the wake of this low, but
there are pockets of clearing stretching from the Pribilofs south
and east to the western AKPEN. This respite from the previous
storm will short-lived, however, as an occluded front east of
Atka continues to progress eastward today. Widespread rain and
strong gales will accompany this front on its journey toward the
eastern Bering.

Farther west, the parent low will begin to slide to the south and
east today. Colder air wrapping underneath the low will help
produce storm-force winds across the western and central Aleutians
through Wednesday night as the low tracks toward the Pribilofs.
Colder air aloft (-30C at 500mb) combined with a series of
vorticity maxima rotating around the low will act steepen lapse
rates and provide the instability necessary to produce widespread
showers and a few embedded thunderstorms south of the low
beginning this afternoon over the western Aleutians and advancing
east toward the Pribilofs by Wednesday morning. By late Tuesday,
this low stalls over the central Bering and becomes vertically
stacked. The broad cyclonic flow and upper-level shortwaves
pinwheeling around the low will keep conditions unsettled across
the entirety of the Bering and Aleutians through the end of the
week.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
(Friday through Monday)

Uncertainty continues to remain moderately high for the extended
period, as models continue to struggle with the pattern evolution.
This is largely due to not one, not two, but three tropical systems
which will in one way or another affect our weather to some degree.
Contestant number one is the remnants of former Super Typhoon Trami,
this system is currently entering the western Bering, and by the
start of the forecast period the parent low will continue to
dumbbell around the western portions of the Bering Sea, with other
smaller lows rotating around it in a Fujiwhara- like fashion, as
additional jet energy feeds into the backside of the trough.

There are two things to watch with this. Both the GFS and ECMWF
have come into better agreement with a deeper trough solution as
the parent low eventually settles somewhere near or just south of
the western Aleutians, but there are still differences with the
overall height fields in terms of alignment and strength of
individual vort maxes rotating through it. The other interesting
issue is the models continue to portray a decent amount of
instability across the western two-thirds of the Bering and Aleutian
chain, as incoming vort maxes bring -30C air or colder into the
region at 500 mb, with fairly warm sea temperatures still present
aided by the tropical moisture from the former typhoon. This could
allow for a fairly decent coverage of isolated to scattered
thunderstorms to develop.

Contestant number two is Super Typhoon Kong-Rey, which is forecast
to pass south of Japan, making landfall across extreme South
Korea, before crossing the Sea of Japan as it heads towards the
eastern portion of the Sea of Okhotsk, before turning east as it
gets absorbed into the Bering/western Aleutian trough. This
system will bring a renewed source of tropical moisture, helping
to maintain the instability while perhaps giving the trough a
boost of energy. Then, as the much-talked about western trough
deepens, the downstream effect is for amplification of an east
Pacific Ridge, with some models suggesting it could try to build
towards the Copper River Delta. In between these two features
will be weakening fronts lifting through southwest Alaska and the
Kodiak Island area, into Southcentral. Each front could bring
periods of moderate rainfall (depending how much tropical moisture
is weened of the parent low out west), and some increased wind
potential to the higher elevations for the end of the work week.

Finally, if that wasn't enough to keep our hands full, Hurricane
Walaka, currently a category 4 hurricane (the equivalent of
yup...you guessed it...a Super Typhoon) is forecast to turn
sharply northwest then north northeast through the end of the
week, as it gets absorbed into an upper low to its north, with
the hurricane getting absorbed into it and then the low starts to
feel the effects of the trough to its northwest and the ridge to
the northeast. The end result (if all of this verifies...and
that's a big if...but has been seen in the numerical data for the
past 2 to 3 days) is an extra tropical low racing towards
southcentral with a tropical feed stretching to Hawaii, which
could provide for some fairly decent rain rates. Stay tuned as
many forecast changes are likely!
