.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An omega block pattern in the upper levels has set up across the
Bering this morning. Upper level ridging is currently in place
across the central Bering and Aleutians, with a vertically-stacked
low centered just off the Kamchatka Peninsula, and a positively
tilted trough over the Gulf and southeastern Alaska. This pattern
is keeping overall ridging with northerly upper level flow across
nearly all of Southern Alaska. However, with the center of the
omega blocking ridge so far away, any shortwaves in the upper
level flow in this pattern are likely to move across Southern
Alaska from the north. Fortunately, disturbances in northerly flow
rarely have much moisture with them. Thus, their net effect is
increased cloud cover in the localized areas along their path.
With one such disturbance moving across the Copper River Basin
this evening, additional cloud cover is present there. Meanwhile,
much of the rest of Southcentral, including Kodiak, and Bristol
Bay remain under mostly clear skies. Further north and west, the
westerly winds are allowing moisture from off the Bering to move
into the Kuskokwim Delta and to a lesser extent, the lower
Kuskokwim Valley. With little change in the pattern expected, this
setup of cloudier conditions across the Kuskokwim Delta, and over
much of the Bering as well, is likely to continue. Warm air in the
upper levels associated with the ridging is trapping the low-level
moisture underneath the inversion, leading to widespread low
stratus and fog across the Bering. A dying front moving eastward
across the western Bering and Aleutians is not expected to make
much more progress before dissipation.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models are all in very good agreement on the large scale and
in general agreement on the lack of precipitation in the
previously described pattern. The NAM is an outlier on Tuesday
into Wednesday regarding another northerly shortwave moving
through the area, depicting a much stronger wave, which would
result in stronger gap winds. Meanwhile all of the other models
are far weaker with it, with little notable impacts on the winds
at the surface. The next point of disagreement comes on Thursday
with the strength of another shortwave moving across Southwest
Alaska. The EC is the fastest and wettest of the models, showing a
soaking rain Thursday morning across Southwest Alaska, with off-
and-on rain further east into Southcentral. The Canadian takes the
middle ground this time with soaking rains along the Bering coast,
but just scattered showers further inland and only isolated
showers in the mountains of Southcentral Thursday afternoon and
evening. Finally the GFS is the furthest west and driest of the
models only showing scattered showers through the Kuskokwim Delta
and nearly everywhere else stays dry as most of the precipitation
stays out over the Bering and moves into the Alaska Peninsula
Thursday afternoon.

PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. There may be
some fog in the vicinity through this morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
After some localized patchy ground fog this morning, expect another
warm and sunny day across Southcentral today as a spoke of the
large blocking ridge sitting over the Bering Sea builds overhead.
Fog may become a little more widespread tonight, particularly in
the Cook Inlet region as increased west-northwest flow across the
western Alaska Range leads to development of a lee side trough
over the Inlet and Susitna Valley. This will help pool low level
moisture. The ridge axis will then shift southward into the Gulf
Tuesday with a series of upper level short-waves to follow. Models
are keying on one stronger wave, but most of the solutions track
it just east of the Copper River Basin. Thus, expect nothing more
than some mid to high clouds with the other weaker short-waves.
Offshore flow will strengthen with the passage of these upper
waves, leading to an uptick in winds, primarily along the coast
(including Seward, Whittier, and Valdez).

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...
A dome of high pressure has moved into the central Bering and
continues to push eastward towards Southwest Alaska. With
widespread subsidence in place, expect the warming and the drying
trend to continue. The main forecast challenge will be determining
which areas will get fog over Southwest Alaska the next two
mornings. The mild weather will continue through Thursday for
Southwest Alaska.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A ridge over the central Bering will continue to propagate
eastward through Wednesday. This ridge has an expansive area of
warmer temperatures aloft associated with it. The warm air over
the cold waters of the Bering is the prime setup for persistent
marine stratus and patchy fog. There is an occluded front west of
Attu Island and a secondary low south of the chain with gales
associated with it. Expecting a round of precipitation and gusty
winds. The gale force winds will reach Amchitka and Adak Tuesday
and then continue east and north as time elapses.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Thursday through
Sunday)...

Beginning Thursday, models are all in agreement depicting a
highly amplified upper level ridge forming into an omega block
over the Northern Pacific extending well north into the Bering Sea
and Northeast Siberia. The ridge is bookend by a pair of upper
level lows, with one located over the far Western Aleutians/Bering
while the other low is located further east over the NE Pacific
impacting the Alaska Panhandle. Energy riding over the top of the
ridge will sweep down from the Arctic and across the mainland on
Thursday in the form of a shortwave trough. There are some
differences in timing of this feature, with the EC being a bit
quicker than other solutions but all show an area of precipitation
spreading south across the AKPEN and Southwest Alaska Thursday,
with lesser amounts seen over Southcentral and the Copper River
Basin as moisture will have a much harder time making it over the
Alaska Range.

As the trough reaches the Gulf, a closed low forms and merges
with the pre-existing upper level low. This will help re-amplify
the large upper ridge over the Bering bringing a return to dry
offshore flow to most of the mainland by Friday. The tightened
pressure gradient between the building high over the Bering and
low over the Eastern Gulf will lead to gusty outflow winds for
typically favored locations along the North Gulf Coast, including
Seward, Whittier, and Valdez.

Looking into next weekend, models all still depict the upper ridge
maintaining itself over the Bering and Western Mainland leading to
a continuation of the pleasant dry and sunny weather for the area
through at least the beginning of the following week.
