.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A large longwave trough continues to dominate western Alaska
extending a warm front into the eastern side of the state. The
long wave trough and embedded upper level low are being
supported by the jet stream which is riding along the Aleutian
chain. The low is situated in the left exit region of the jet over
the eastern aleutians where jet winds are approaching 110 kts.
The warm front in the northern Gulf of Alaska brought widespread
rainfall to much of Southcentral overnight but that has begun to
lighten up this afternoon as the front begins to weaken.
Satellite imagery shows a broad area of cloud cover over the
southern mainland and Aleutian chain which is being advected by a
deepening surface low pressure system over the western Aleutians.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in good agreement early in the period regarding the
surface low pressure over the western Aleutians. Quickly, models
start to diverge becoming more variable on Saturday morning as the
low moves into the Bering. The EC is the fasted solution with the
GFS and NAM in decent agreement. By Sunday morning, models have
very little agreement with the GFS splitting into two low
pressures, the NAM still holding to one central low and the EC
dissipating into a broad trough. The NAM was chosen as the main
solution for this pattern.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions are expected through Saturday morning,
however brief MVFR ceilings or visibilities are possible starting
late tonight but uncertainty was too high to include in the
package at this time. Southerly winds this evening will become
light and variable overnight as a weak surface ridge develops
ahead of the next approaching low from the Bering. Southerly winds
increase again late Saturday afternoon as the front moves across
the Southwest.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

The main forecast challenge in the short term will be patchy fog
potential tonight, and then winds with the next front coming in.
Late this afternoon, some breaks in the cloud cover and diurnal
heating have allowed some showers to develop across the Mat-Su
Valley and across the Chugach Mountains. Further east, showers are
developing as well, but, to a lesser degree in coverage and
intensity. This activity should diminish after sunset. With light
winds in place, saturated soil conditions given the recent heavier
rainfall, and some potential breaks in the cloud cover, patchy fog
was added to most of the marine zones and inland valleys.

Heading into your weekend, our attention then turns to a warm
front attached to a Bering Sea low. This front looks to enter the
Kodiak area early to mid day Saturday as a warm front, continuing
northeast as the front begins its occlusion process. Ahead of
this front, winds will be on the increase. Todays hi-resolution
models have significantly ramped up the Turnagain Arm winds due to
a much tighter pressure gradient. The same is true for the Knik
Arm, Prince William Sound area southwest to the Kodiak region, but
to a lesser extent. Given the recent trends we took a middle
ground approach and increased the winds a decent amount, but not
as much as guidance wants to imply, We'll continue to monitor this
for any further potential increases.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Monday)...

Scattered showers ongoing across portions of Southwest Alaska this
afternoon will diminish with time this evening with the loss of
solar heating. The break will only last for a few hours, as the
next wave of steady rain moves into Southwest Alaska early
Saturday morning. This rain is associated with a low centered
near Adak this afternoon. The rain will begin at the immediate
coast of Bristol Bay before sunrise, then spread northward into
interior Bristol Bay and move up the coast into the Lower
Kuskokwim Delta through the day. The steady onshore winds and the
approach of the low itself tracking between St. Matthew Island and
the Bering coast will keep rain and breezy conditions ongoing
through Saturday night and at least the first half of the day on
Sunday. The winds will persist in the 20 to 30 mph range across
much of Southwest Alaska Sunday and Sunday night, as the rain
gradually tapers off and diminishes in coverage through Sunday
night. Wind gusts during this time will be 30 to 40 mph. High
pressure builds across the area during the day on Monday, which
should mean most of the region stays dry. However, an isolated
shower or two cannot be ruled out, especially in the mountains.
The dry weather will continue into Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Monday)...

An area of low pressure currently centered near Adak will be the
primary feature moving across the Bering for the next couple of days.
Most of the active weather associated with the low will be east
of it, with moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall expected
across the eastern Aleutians, Alaska Peninsula, and Bristol Bay
tonight and some of the morning Saturday. Winds throughout this
region will generally be sustained at 20 to 30 mph with gusts to
around 40 mph, so it will be a wind-driven rain as well. The rain
and gusty winds will move into Southwest Alaska during the day
Saturday. The center of the low will maintain its intensity as it
passes the Pribilofs on Saturday afternoon and continue
northeastward to the west of Nunivak Island late Saturday night.
Then the low will slowly weaken as it tracks to near Norton Sound
by Sunday afternoon. Gusty winds will flip to out of the northwest
on Sunday behind the low, then will gradually diminish.

An area of high pressure following behind the low will build over
the southern Bering and all of the Aleutian Islands by Sunday
evening, then will slowly drift eastward into the eastern Bering
by Monday evening. The usual fog and stratus can be expected in
the affected areas near the center of the high, with southerly
winds increasing across the western Bering. However, no organized
low pressure systems nor associated precipitation are expected to
be anywhere in the Bering on Monday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

A generally active weather pattern with a continued tap into
tropical moisture will persist through the upcoming week. Flat
ridging building up into the eastern Bering on Monday will shift
inland and over Southwest Alaska Monday night and Tuesday. On
Wednesday the ridge will shift east over Southcentral Alaska as a
strong North Pacific low crosses the western Aleutians and then
tracks into the central Bering through Thursday. The associated
frontal system will reach the Southwest Alaska coast Wednesday
night and then continue inland across Southwest Alaska Thursday
before moving over Southcentral Alaska Thursday night and Friday.
The parent vertically stacked low will follow quickly behind,
tracking into Southwest Alaska Friday and then opening to a trough
as it swings across Southcentral Alaska and the northern Gulf
Friday night through Saturday morning. The next strong low will
cross the Aleutians Saturday and continue to deepen as it crosses
Bering Sunday while pushing another rather wet front across
Southwest Alaska.
