Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Anchorage AK 346 AM AKDT Sat Aug 25 2018 .ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS... The main feature for the area is a low in the southern Bering and its front that extends through Bristol Bay and the Alaska Peninsula as it tracks toward the southern mainland. A long fetch of moisture is riding over a dominant North Pacific high that is feeding warm air and moisture behind the front. This setup is bringing rain to the eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula. Ahead of the front a shortwave is pushing through Southcentral Alaska bringing some showers to the area. && .MODEL DISCUSSION... The models are in good agreement with the main synoptic features through the mid term. While there is good agreement with the timing of the front moving through Southcentral Alaska, the models do have some differences with how much downsloping will occur. As would be expected, the hi-res guidance looks to have the best handle on this and was preferred. && .AVIATION... PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. Fog is expected to develop this morning in some locations around Anchorage, but at this time it is not expected to move in over the airport. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)... Lingering showers over the Susitna valley and Copper River basin this morning will diminish and/or end today as the responsible upper level trough moves into Canada. A weather system over Kodiak Island will push east across the Gulf today. Some precipitation with this system will reach the southern Kenai Peninsula this morning, but not further inland. A strong front associated with a low in the Bering is immediately behind the Kodiak system. This front will push precipitation northeast into the Kenai Peninsula this afternoon, and into the upper Cook Inlet area during the late afternoon through evening. Winds and precipitation will increase late tonight into Sunday afternoon across all of the Southcentral mainland. This front is supported by a fairly strong southwesterly jet aloft. The front will then push east into Canada Sunday evening. The flow aloft will be from the southwest, so some showers will continue behind the front, tapering off from the west Sunday night. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)... A warm front sliding north over the Alaska Peninsula is advancing another round of steady rain across Bristol Bay this morning. The front and the precipitation will continue to track north into the Southwest Mainland today. This is all associated with a low currently positioned between Adak and Saint Paul tracking northeast through the southern Bering. The low will continue its advance into the northern Bering tonight with its occluded front expected to reach the western coast late Saturday and drive east into the interior Sunday morning. A persistent moist, cyclonic flow around the low will keep the AKpen and Southwest Alaska rather wet and breezy through Saturday and into the first half of Sunday with only a few scattered showers lingering over the higher terrain by Sunday night. Gusty southerly winds over the AKpen and along the west coast this morning will spread over the southwest today and remain across much of Southwest Alaska through Sunday night with gusts near 30 to 40 mph, especially nearer the coast. High pressure building upstream of the low Sunday settles over the area during the day on Monday. This will lead to drier and clearer conditions Monday and Tuesday, especially from Bristol Bay north. A quick-moving low south of the AKpen, however, could produce some light rain from King Salmon south late Sunday through Monday afternoon before moving east into the northern Gulf. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)... A 992mb low centered between Adak and Saint Paul this morning continues to be the dominant weather feature across the Bering. The crux of the rainfall and gusty winds will remain east of the low, impacting the eastern Aleutians, AKpen, and eastern Bering. Winds with this system will generally range from 20 to 30 mph with gusts around 40 mph. A few areas more prone to gap flow and channeling may see gusts around 45 mph. The rain and gusty winds will move into Southwest Alaska by late Saturday. Winds wrapping around the low will also increase later today as the center of circulation moves north along the western flank of the Pribilofs. This secondary core of strong winds will advance east for Sunday as the low passes the Pribilofs and tracks north of Nunivak Island. The low will slowly weaken as it tracks to near Norton Sound Sunday afternoon. Behind the low, an area of high pressure will build over the southern Bering and the Aleutian Chain by Sunday evening. The ridge axis will then drift into the eastern Bering by Monday evening. Patchy fog and stratus will likely develop across the central Bering near the center of the high. Southerly winds will develop over the western Bering and Aleutians by Monday with areas of rain moving up from the north Pacific towards the western and central Aleutians late Monday as another low pressure system and associated warm front inch closer to the region. && .LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)... A generally active weather pattern with a continued tap into tropical moisture will persist through the upcoming week. Flat ridging building up into the eastern Bering on Monday will shift inland and over Southwest Alaska Monday night and Tuesday. On Wednesday the ridge will shift east over Southcentral Alaska as a strong North Pacific low crosses the western Aleutians and then tracks into the central Bering through Thursday. The associated frontal system will reach the Southwest Alaska coast Wednesday night and then continue inland across Southwest Alaska Thursday before moving over Southcentral Alaska Thursday night and Friday. The parent, vertically stacked low will follow quickly behind, tracking into Southwest Alaska Friday and then opening to a trough as it swings across Southcentral Alaska and the northern Gulf Friday night through Saturday morning. The next strong low will cross the Aleutians Saturday and continue to deepen as it crosses the Bering Sunday while pushing another rather wet front across Southwest Alaska. && .AFC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
