Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A highly amplified ridge-trough pattern has developed over
Southern Alaska with an upper level low and associated trough over
the eastern third of the state and a broad ridge over much of the
rest of the state, whose axis is along the Bering Coast. Thus, for
much of southern mainland Alaska, the upper level flow is out of
the northwest, allowing cold air to filter southward across the
region. This offshore flow pattern is a dry one, so precipitation
will be a non-issue for much of the rest of the week in
Southcentral. However, the pattern also favors high winds through
the gaps. As such a High Wind Warning is in effect for Thompson
Pass and Valdez. Dense fog has developed overnight through Bethel
and the surrounding area due to plentiful low level moisture
moving into the area from off the Bering, with a strong inversion
present around 850 mb capping any vertical mixing.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models remain in very good agreement over the next couple
days. Once again the local effect winds will be the greatest
forecast challenge. Already today the wind forecast for Valdez has
been particularly challenging. The Matanuska Valley wind is also
expected to develop later today. The challenge of timing and
location will again be a great one, including the threat of
blowing dust from off the glaciers. Forecast confidence is high.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions will persist through at least Saturday.
Timing the gusty northerly winds will be the biggest forecast
challenge, but the general expectation is that the winds will be
gusty while the sun is out helping to mix the lower atmosphere,
and less so at night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Offshore winds around Cook Inlet and the North Gulf Coast and
its impact on temperatures will continue to be the primary
forecast concerns through Thursday. Winds in Thompson Pass are
beginning to have intermittent warning level gusts. These warning
level winds should strengthen to around 80 mph and become much
more continuous by this afternoon as high pressure from the
interior begins to tighten the pressure gradient and upper level
jet support moves overhead. This will also bring the greatest
chance for the development of warning level gusts in Valdez as
increasing northerly upper level winds make the area much more
favorable for mountain wave development. As a result expect
northerly winds in the Valdez to increase significantly, likely
to warning level by this afternoon, and continue to be strong and
erratic into the evening hours. In addition to the strong winds,
expect areas of blowing and drifting snow in Thompson Pass today,
especially in the exposed top of the pass where the worst are
expected.

After winds throughout the Gulf Coast peak this afternoon and
evening, they are expected to begin to diminish overnight and
especially on Thursday as high pressure begins to move over the
area. This will allow for a period of much quieter, sunny, and
warm weather to develop in most areas for late Thursday that will
likely persist into Friday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
At the onset of the forecast period there is a dome of high
pressure over Southwest that spans over the AKPEN and Sandpoint.
As the low pushes into the Bering, the high will shift eastward.
Today will be dry across Southwest and tomorrow morning will be
dry. By Thursday afternoon the precipitation shield will be near
Kipnuk and Hooper Bay, pushing inland Thursday night and Friday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

There is a mature surface low near Kamchatka that is currently
just under 1000 mb with a cold front west of Attu Island. Along
this cold front there is another wave. This new low will track
northeastward and rapidly intensify. The short wave supporting
this feature will become negatively-tilted tonight. By Thursday
morning this system's surface low will have decreased 24 mb in
less than 24 hrs. Expecting storm force winds and rough seas in
the Western and Central Bering on Thursday. As this baroclinic
zone pushes eastward, gale force winds even in the warm sector
are anticipated in the Eastern Bering Sea on Thursday. It almost
goes without saying that another round of precipitation will also
accompany this system.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
On Thursday night a large upper and surface low is over the
northwest Bering Sea with a ridge from the north Pacific through
western Alaska to the arctic coast with another low off Vancouver
Island. The ridge slowly breaks down and slides east while the Low
in the Bering Sea shunts to the north northwest through Sunday.
The upper trough extends from Asia south into the Bering Sea and
Aleutians Saturday. A surface low in the base of this trough will
move to the eastern Bering Sea Sunday then stall and dissipate.
Another low forms south of this low and that will move into the
Gulf of Alaska Monday. The upper level flow becomes zonal again
Tuesday and Wednesday. The models are not in good agreement after
Sunday, thus we will trend toward the blend of the EC ensemble
solution, though not entirely sell out to it. The pattern will
remain active through the weekend into mid week next week.
